Biomonitoring of pesticides, pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs in a freshwater invertebrate to estimate toxic or effect pressure.

Multiple classes of environmental contaminants have been found in aquatic environments, globally. Understanding internalised concentrations in the organism could further improve the risk assessment process. The present study is concerned with the determination of several contaminant classes (107 compounds) in Gammarus pulex collected from 15 sites covering 5 river catchments across Suffolk, UK. Quantitative method performance was acceptable for 67 compounds including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, illicit drugs and drugs of abuse. A total of 56 compounds were detectable and ranged from <LOQ to 4

Developmental experience with anthropogenic noise hinders adult mate location in an acoustically signalling invertebrate.

Phenotypic plasticity facilitates survival and reproduction in rapidly changing and novel environments. Traffic noise spectrally overlaps with (i.e. masks) the sounds used by many acoustically signalling organisms to locate and secure mates. To determine if pre-reproductive exposure to noise improves adult performance in noisy environments, we reared field crickets (Teleogryllus oceanicus) in one of three noise environments: masking traffic noise, traffic noise from which frequencies that spectrally overlap with the crickets' song were removed (non-masking), or silence. At reproductive maturit

Facing the Heat: Does Desiccation and Thermal Stress Explain Patterns of Orientation in an Intertidal Invertebrate?

A key challenge for ecologists is to quantify, explain and predict the ecology and behaviour of animals from knowledge of their basic physiology. Compared to our knowledge of many other types of distribution and behaviour, and how these are linked to individual function, we have a poor level of understanding of the causal basis for orientation behaviours. Most explanations for patterns of animal orientation assume that animals will modify their exposure to environmental factors by altering their orientation. We used a keystone grazer on rocky shores, the limpet Cellana tramoserica, to test thi

Targeting and retention enhancement of quantum dots decorated with amino acids in an invertebrate model organism.

The use of quantum dots (QDs) in biological imaging applications and targeted drug delivery is expected to increase. However, the efficiency of QDs in drug targeting needs to be improved. Here, we show that amino acids linked to CdTe QDs significantly increased the targeted transfer efficiency and biological safety in the invertebrate model Bombyx mori. Compared with bare QDs530, the transfer efficiency of Ala- and Gly-conjugated QDs (QDs530-Ala and QDs530-Gly) in circulatory system increased by 2.6 ± 0.3 and 1.5 ± 0.3 times, and increased by 7.8 ± 0.9 and 2.9 ± 0.2 times in target tissue silk

Storm-event-transport of urban-use pesticides to streams likely impairs invertebrate assemblages.

Insecticide use in urban areas results in the detection of these compounds in streams following stormwater runoff at concentrations likely to cause toxicity for stream invertebrates. In this 2013 study, stormwater runoff and streambed sediments were analyzed for 91 pesticides dissolved in water and 118 pesticides on sediment. Detections included 33 pesticides, including insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, degradates, and a synergist. Patterns in pesticide occurrence reveal transport of dissolved and sediment-bound pesticides, including pyrethroids, from upland areas through stormwater outfal

Macro-invertebrate decline in surface water polluted with imidacloprid: a rebuttal and some new analyses.

Imidacloprid, the largest selling insecticide in the world, has received particular attention from scientists, policymakers and industries due to its potential toxicity to bees and aquatic organisms. The decline of aquatic macro-invertebrates due to imidacloprid concentrations in the Dutch surface waters was hypothesised in a recent paper by Van Dijk, Van Staalduinen and Van der Sluijs (PLOS ONE, May 2013). Although we do not disagree with imidacloprid's inherent toxicity to aquatic organisms, we have fundamental concerns regarding the way the data were analysed and interpreted. Here, we demon

Evolutionary concepts in ecotoxicology: tracing the genetic background of differential cadmium sensitivities in invertebrate lineages.

In many toxicological and ecotoxicological studies and experimental setups, the investigator is mainly interested in traditional parameters such as toxicity data and effects of toxicants on molecular, cellular or physiological functions of individuals, species or statistical populations. It is clear, however, that such approaches focus on the phenotype level of animal species, whilst the genetic and evolutionary background of reactions to environmental toxicants may remain untold. In ecotoxicological risk assessment, moreover, species sensitivities towards pollutants are often regarded as rand

Mechanisms underlying toxicity induced by CdTe quantum dots determined in an invertebrate model organism.

A systematic and thorough quantitative analysis of the in vivo effects of inorganic nanoparticles is extremely important for the design of functional nanomaterials for diagnostic and therapeutic applications, better understanding of their non-specificity toward tissues and cell types, and for assessments of their toxicity. This study was undertaken to examine the impact of CdTe quantum dots (QDs) on an invertebrate freshwater model organism, Hydra vulgaris, for assessment of long term toxicity effects. The continuous exposure of living polyps to sub-lethal doses of QDs caused time and dose dep

Alteration of sensitivity and time scale in invertebrate photoreceptors exposed to anoxia, dinitrophenol, and carbon dioxide.

The effects of anoxia, 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), and carbon dioxide (CO2) on the late receptor potential of Balanus lateral ocelli, Limulus ventral eyes, and the retinular cells of Linulus lateral eyes have been studied. Either anoxia, DNP, or exposure to 100% CO2 causes a depolarization of 5-30 mV and a gradual reduction and eventually abolition of the late receptor potential and an increase in the latency and time to peak of the response. This lengthening of the time scale is in contrast to the response obtained in photoreceptors that have been light-adapted or injected with calcium. In that

Diversity of Pharmaceuticals Enhances Antibiotic Resistance in the Invertebrate Gut via Biofilm-Mediated Mechanisms.

The environmental accumulation of non-antibiotic pharmaceuticals is an emerging driver of antibiotic resistance. While individual compounds are known to shape the soil resistome, and contaminant diversity also plays a role, the impact of pharmaceutical diversity on the gut resistome of soil invertebrates remains unclear. Here, we combined metagenomics and metaproteomics to examine the collembolan gut and soil resistome across a gradient of pharmaceutical diversity under diurnal warming. Increasing pharmaceutical diversity at a constant total concentration significantly enriched antibiotic resi

Marine benthic invertebrate biodiversity in South Africa: Advances and gaps in taxonomic and genetic knowledge.

Traditional taxonomy is the foundation of biodiversity science with modern molecular techniques and integrated approaches now essential for advancing our understanding of ocean life. Without improved knowledge of marine biodiversity, it is impossible to address the biodiversity crisis or develop the fundamental science needed to assess, plan and manage marine biodiversity and maintain its many benefits. South Africa harbours exceptional marine biodiversity and has ongoing efforts to systematically list, map, monitor, assess and conserve this national asset. This review consolidates progress in

Promotion of microplastic degradation on the conjugative transfer of antibiotic resistance genes in the gut of macrobenthic invertebrates.

Microplastics and antibiotic resistance genes are two new pollutants in water environments, and they have potential risks to human health and ecological safety. On the basis of the accumulation of pollutants and microorganisms in sediment, macrobenthic invertebrates are considered as potential practitioners of microplastic degradation and antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) transfer. However, whether microplastic degradation can affect ARG transfer in aquatic environments, especially in the gut of macrobenthic invertebrates, remains unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that microplastics inclu

Insight into molecular and neural mechanisms of general anesthesia from the invertebrate model Drosophila melanogaster.

General anesthesia (GA) is a pharmacologically induced, reversible state characterized by unconsciousness, amnesia, analgesia, and immobility in response to noxious stimuli. Accumulating evidence from animal models has elucidated diverse mechanisms of the action underlying GA, including disruption of large-scale brain network connectivity, regulation of multiple neural pathways, and modulation of specific receptors and ion channels. Despite advances in dissecting the neurobiological basis of anesthetic action, the precise cellular and circuit-level processes remain incompletely understood, lim

Chronic tributyltin exposure induces metabolic disruption in an invertebrate model animal, Lymnaea stagnalis.

Over the last 20 years, tributyltin (TBT) has been reported to cause metabolic disruption in both invertebrates and vertebrates, highlighting the need for further detailed analysis of its physiological effects. This study aimed to investigate the metabolic-disrupting effects of TBT from the behavioral to the molecular level. Adult specimens of the great pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis) were exposed to an environmentally relevant concentration (100 ng L-1) of TBT for 21 days. After the chronic exposure, behavioral alterations as well as histological, cellular, and molecular changes were investiga

Amyloid fil rouge from invertebrate up to human ageing: A focus on Alzheimer disease.

Amyloid fibrils and fibril-like structures are currently estimated to represent many different products of several genes in humans and play a key role in many types of proteinopathies, commonly associated with ageing process. They share the mutual feature of aggregation-prone proteins and the building up of molecular-supramolecular structure, such as inter-neuronal plaques in the brain of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) patients, characterized by an extraordinary strength. Noteworthy, this type of structure has been reported in different organisms, in particular in invertebrates. The aim of the curre

A Review of Freshwater Invertebrates as Biomonitors of Methylmercury: the Importance of More Complete Physical and Chemical Reporting.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a toxic and bioaccumulative organo-metallic compound that is naturally produced in many ecosystems. Organisms that occupy the lower trophic positions in food webs may be key factors in the assessment of MeHg biomagnification between ecosystems. Here we present a review of the peer-reviewed literature examining MeHg bioaccumulation in freshwater invertebrates, focused principally on insects. This review aims to characterize the invertebrates that bioaccumulate higher MeHg concentrations and therefore pose a higher risk to upper trophic levels and to clarify which ecosyst

Competence of non-human primates to transmit Leishmania infantum to the invertebrate vector Lutzomyia longipalpis.

Leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease of worldwide relevance. Visceral leishmaniasis is endemic in Brazil, where it is caused by Leishmania infantum with Lutzomyia longipalpis being the most important invertebrate vector. Non-human primates are susceptible to L. infantum infection. However, little is known about the role of these species as reservoirs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the transmissibility potential of visceral leishmaniasis by non-human primates through xenodiagnosis using the phlebotomine Lu. longipalpis as well as to identify phlebotomine species prevalent in the area whe

Implications of the EUCAST Trailing Phenomenon in Candida tropicalis for the In Vivo Susceptibility in Invertebrate and Murine Models.

Candida tropicalis isolates often display reduced but persistent growth (trailing) over a broad fluconazole concentration range during EUCAST susceptibility testing. Whereas weak trailing (<25% of the positive growth control) is common and found not to impair fluconazole efficacy, we investigated if more pronounced trailing impacted treatment efficacy. Fluconazole efficacy against two weakly (≤25% growth), two moderately (26% to 50% growth), and one heavily (>70% growth) trailing resistant isolate and one resistant (100% growth) isolate were investigated in vitro and in vivo (in a Galleria mel

Potential for Waterborne and Invertebrate Transmission of West Nile Virus in the Great Salt Lake, Utah.

In November and December of 2013, a large mortality event involving 15,000 to 20,000 eared grebes (Podiceps nigricollis) occurred at the Great Salt Lake (GSL), UT. The onset of the outbreak in grebes was followed by a mortality event in >86 bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). During the die-off, West Nile virus (WNV) was detected by reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) or viral culture in the carcasses of grebes and eagles submitted to the National Wildlife Health Center. However, no activity of mosquitoes, the primary vectors of WNV, was detected by the State of Utah's WNV monitoring progra

Small Packages, Big Returns: Uncovering the Venom Diversity of Small Invertebrate Conoidean Snails.

Venomous organisms used in research were historically chosen based on size and availability. This opportunity-driven strategy created a species bias in which snakes, scorpions, and spiders became the primary subjects of venom research. Increasing technological advancements have enabled interdisciplinary studies using genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics to expand venom investigation to animals that produce small amounts of venom or lack traditional venom producing organs. One group of non-traditional venomous organisms that have benefitted from the rise of -omic technologies is the Conoid
