Tuberculosis remains a major human health problem worldwide, and strategies for its prevention include the generation and characterization of new recombinant vaccines containing immunodominant antigens from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. By comparing the secretomes of wild-type Mycobacterium bovis and a PstS1-recombinant M. bovis BCG vaccine substrain (rBCG38), we identified six conserved hypothetical proteins (BCG2696, BCG1674, BCG0372, BCG0427, BCG2436c, and BCG3053) that are differentially expressed. Our findings will aid in the identification of highly immunogenic proteins present in rBCG.

The allotypes of C6, C7, factor B (BF) and factor I (IF) of the human complement system were studied in 11 Japanese patients with pemphigus (5 with pemphigus vulgaris and 6 with pemphigus foliaceus) and 17 with bullous pemphigoid (BP) to investigate the genetic background of these diseases. Crude preparations of Taenia solium cysticerci were partially purified by a chromatofocusing procedure to obtain antigenic fractions that were shown to be active in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with known positive cysticercosis sera. Expressed prostatic secretions (EPS) obtained from 62 infertile and urological patients have been analyzed for their protein content by sodium dodecylsulfate electrophoresis and isoelectrofocusing. The enzyme properties of leukocyte beta-galactosidase and the effects of macromolecular compounds on its activity were studied in detail. It was demonstrated that various macromolecular compounds markedly influence the activity of beta-galactosidase. These phenomena should be taken into account when considering the biochemical abnormalities of tissues of patients with mucopolysaccharidoses and mucolipidoses.

Ornithine transcarbamylase was purified and characterized from normal human liver. Twenty eight patients with hereditary methemoglobinemia have been found and examined. Using the techniques of analytic isoelectrofucossing in polyacrylamide gel and the preparative isoelectrofocussing on a column in sucrose gradient we have managed to disclose an abnormal fraction in hemolysate of the above mentioned patients. Beta-lactamase-mediated resistance was investigated in 59 putative extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-positive Salmonella spp. from the paediatric ward of a tertiary hospital in Durban, South Africa. Pseudomonas cepacia, a significant pulmonary pathogen among children with cystic fibrosis (CF), often possesses an inducible beta-lactamase. Since a postinfectious or autoimmune etiology is suggested to be involved in the pathogenesis of Tourette's syndrome (TS), we investigated oligoclonal bands (OB) of immunoglobulin G (IgG) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), indicating a humoral immune response in the central nervous system. CSF examinations including isoelectric focusing to analyze the presence of OB were performed in 21 TS patients [17 men/4 women, mean age = 29 ± 12 (SD) years]. Blood samples containing approximately 2% and 4% sodium fluoride have been stored at 4 degrees C for up to 5 months and 4 weeks respectively. We have investigated the molecular basis of hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) deficiency in a patient who presented with the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. We reported previously familial hypo-retinol-binding proteinemia in a child who developed keratomalacia during measles infection.
