Development of deep learning-based mobile application for the identification of Coccidia species in pigs using microscopic images.

Coccidiosis is a gastrointestinal parasitic disease caused by different species of Eimeria and Isospora, poses a significant threat to pig farming, leading to substantial economic losses attributed to reduced growth rates, poor feed conversion, increased mortality rates, and the expense of treatment. Traditional methods for identifying Coccidia species in pigs rely on fecal examination and microscopic analysis, necessitating expert personnel for accurate species identification. To address this need, a deep learning-based mobile application capable of automatically identifying different species

Urban environmental drivers of eukaryotic microbiota and parasite prevalence in domestic pigeon faeces: a metabarcoding-based public health risk assessment in Seoul, South Korea.

Feral pigeons in Seoul, South Korea, pose a significant public health risk due to their potential to spread zoonotic pathogens. However, the diversity of their eukaryotic microbiota, particularly parasitic organisms, remains underexplored with urban environmental factors. We aimed to characterize the eukaryotic microbiota in pigeon faeces and assess how urban factors such as housing density, proximity to water sources and parks and the presence of homeless individuals influence parasite diversity. Faecal samples were collected from pigeons in various regions of Seoul and adjacent cities. Metab

A New Isosporan (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from Wood Thrush, Hylocichla mustelina (Aves: Passeriformes: Turdidae), in Oklahoma.

The wood thrush, Hylocichla mustelina, is a North American passerine bird closely related to other thrushes and is widely distributed across North America. Nothing is known of the coccidian parasites of this bird. Feces from a single H. mustelina found dead in McCurtain County, Oklahoma were collected and examined for coccidia; it was found to be passing a new species of Isospora. Oocysts of Isospora gmelini n. sp. are subspheroidal to ellipsoidal with a smooth bilayered wall, measure (length [L] × width [W]) 19.5 × 16.5 μm, and have a L/W ratio of 1.2; a micropyle and oocyst residuum were abs

Chronic intermittent diarrhea in a 14-month-old Abyssinian cat.

A 14-month-old intact, female Abyssinian cat was presented for chronic intermittent diarrhea and bilateral enlargement of the mammary glands. Gastrointestinal coccidiosis was diagnosed; therapy with sulfadi-methoxine was unsuccessful in the elimination of Isospora felis and clinical signs. Infection with Tritrichomonas foetus was diagnosed by fecal polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and successfully treated with ronidazole and dietary modification.

Progression of asexual to sexual stages of Cystoisospora suis in a host cell-free environment as a model for Coccidia.

Coccidia display a characteristic life cycle, where the parasites switch between asexual and sexual development, resulting in an environmental stage, the oocyst. The entero-pathogenic Cystoisospora suis, a coccidian parasite of swine and close relative to Toxoplasma gondii, undergoes development in one host-cycle. Despite the well-described intracellular development of Coccidia, the C. suis life cycle can progress in an in vitro, host cell-free system after initial intracellular development of merozoites. A novel host cell-free cultivation method was developed by transferring purified merozoit

18S rRNA gene metabarcoding for investigation of gastrointestinal parasite diversity in great cormorants.

The great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) is a migratory, fish-eating bird that may act as a carrier for various pathogens, raising potential ecological and public health concerns. This study investigated the diversity of gastrointestinal parasites in great cormorants from the Republic of Korea using 18S rRNA gene metabarcoding and conventional diagnostic methods. Fecal samples were collected from 10 great cormorants in Korea, and DNA was extracted for metabarcoding targeting the V4 and V9 regions of the 18S rRNA gene using the MiSeq platform. Conventional PCR and microscopic examination were

Meta-transcriptomic analysis of the virome and microbiome of the invasive Indian myna (Acridotheres tristis) in Australia.

Invasive species exert a serious impact on native fauna and flora and have become the target of eradication and management efforts worldwide. Invasive avian species can also be important pathogen reservoirs, although their viromes and microbiomes have rarely been studied. As one of the top 100 invasive pest species globally, the expansion of Indian mynas (Acridotheres tristis) into peri-urban and rural environments, in conjunction with increasing free-ranging avian agricultural practices, may increase the risk of microbial pathogens jumping species boundaries. Herein, we used a meta-transcript
