Iceberg lesion-A rare case of chronic osteomyelitis of the jaw with underlying radicular cyst: A case report.

Osteomyelitis is an inflammatory condition of the bones that often starts with an infection of the medullary cavity and swiftly extends to the haversian system and periosteum. If drainage and antimicrobials are ineffective, acute osteomyelitis may progress to chronic osteomyelitis. Here, we offer a unique case that analyzes the radiographic and clinical characteristics of osteomyelitis with underlying disease. Cysts and cyst-like lesions of the jaws must be diagnosed and evaluated using radiographic findings in conjunction with clinical complaints. This case study examines the circumstances th

Interleukin-1alpha-dependent regulation of matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9) secretion and activation in the epithelial cells of odontogenic jaw cysts.

Interleukin-1alpha (IL-1alpha) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) are thought to be involved in odontogenic cyst expansion. In this study, we investigated the effects of IL-1alpha on the secretion and activation of MMP-9 in odontogenic jaw cysts. An active form of MMP-9 was present in odontogenic keratocyst (6 of 8 cases) fluids more frequently than dentigerous cyst (3 of 10 cases) and radicular cyst (3 of 10 cases) fluids, although proMMP-9 was present in all cyst fluids. Odontogenic keratocyst fragments in explant culture secreted a larger amount of IL-1alpha than dentigerous cyst and ra

Multi-layer feature aggregation network with residual module and attention mechanism for jaw cyst image segmentation.

Medical image segmentation plays a critical role in diverse healthcare applications, providing essential support for early disease detection and comprehensive treatment planning. However, due to blurred boundaries, low contrast between lesions and surrounding tissues, and variations in lesion morphology and scale, existing segmentation methods still face significant challenges in enlarging the receptive field and extracting discriminative image features. To address these challenges, we propose MFA-Net, an innovative architecture specifically designed for accurate medical image segmentation. Du

HIMS-Net: Horizontal-vertical interaction and multiple side-outputs network for cyst segmentation in jaw images.

Jaw cysts are mainly caused by abnormal tooth development, chronic oral inflammation, or jaw damage, which may lead to facial swelling, deformity, tooth loss, and other symptoms. Due to the diversity and complexity of cyst images, deep-learning algorithms still face many difficulties and challenges. In response to these problems, we present a horizontal-vertical interaction and multiple side-outputs network for cyst segmentation in jaw images. First, the horizontal-vertical interaction mechanism facilitates complex communication paths in the vertical and horizontal dimensions, and it has the a

Risk Factor Analysis of Graft Failure With Concomitant Cyst Enucleation of the Jaw Bone: A Retrospective Multicenter Study.

PURPOSE: Cysts are common pathologic entities in the oral and maxillofacial region. Enucleation is commonly used for treatment and is occasionally followed by bone grafting. However, no studies have evaluated factors affecting the failure of grafts used for cystic defects in the oral and maxillofacial region. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the risk factors for postoperative graft failure in patients treated with cyst enucleation and simultaneous bone grafting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical data for 305 patients who had undergone cyst enucleation with simultaneous bo

A comparison of piezoelectric surgery and conventional techniques in the enucleation of cysts and tumors in the jaws: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite the comprehensive classifications provided by the WHO, the most common lesions include radicular cysts, dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts, ameloblastomas, and odontomas. The piezoelectric technique has shown effectiveness in removing intraosseous pathologies by relying on ultrasonic microvibrations, which help preserve soft and vascular tissues. Precision in manipulating intraosseous pathology can impact the prognosis and improve the surgical procedure by controlling hemorrhage and promoting microscopic benefits. While previous research has compared the advantages

Gorlin's syndrome with a cardiac lesion and jaw cysts with some unusual histological features. A case report and review of the literature.

A 25-year-old male with Gorlin's syndrome associated with an intracardiac lesion, presented with jaw cysts requiring surgical treatment. One of the cysts contained unusual histological components including fibrous tissue, myxomatous stroma and abnormal epithelial hyperplasia. Metabolic investigation showed normal parathyroid function and normal tissue responsiveness to parathyroid hormone, despite several clinical and radiological features suggestive of pseudo-hypoparathyroidism. The principal features of the syndrome are reviewed.

A 3-year follow-up clinical study on the preservation for vitality of involved tooth in jaw cysts through an innovative method.

Jaw cysts commonly affect the oral and maxillofacial region, involving adjacent tooth roots. The management of these teeth, particularly regarding root canal therapy and apicoectomy, lacks consensus. This study introduces a novel treatment concept and refined surgical approach to preserve pulp viability in teeth involved in jaw cysts. The objective was to investigate the effectiveness and potential benefits of this approach over a 36-month follow-up period. A conservative management approach prioritized vitality preservation, reserving root canal treatment and apicectomy for cases with post-op

Evidence of the presence of rheumatoid factor and antibodies reacting with human and rabbit IgA in fluid from non-keratinizing jaw cysts.

Fluid from an apical periodontal and a follicular jaw cyst formed, in double diffusion in agarose gel, a continuous precipitin line against IgA isolated from human and rabbit serum, IgA myeloma protein, and secretory IgA. Results of immunoelectrophoresis and absorption experiments indicated that the IgA precipitating factor was an immunoglobulin belonging to the IgM class. Furthermore, the two cyst fluids contained immune complexes, possibly IgA-anti-IgA, which precipitated in agar gel. The same two cyst fluids showed a positive reaction in the Waaler-Rose test with tires of 40 and 80, respect
