Osteoarthritis development in novel experimental mouse models induced by knee joint instability.

OBJECTIVE: Although osteoarthritis (OA) is induced by accumulated mechanical stress to joints, little is known about the underlying molecular mechanism. To apply approaches from mouse genomics, this study created experimental mouse OA models by producing instability in the knee joints. METHODS: The models were of four types: severe, moderate, mild, and medial, depending on the severity and direction of instability imposed by combinations of ligament transection and menisectomy. OA development was evaluated by X-ray and histology by Safranin-O staining, and quantified using our original gradin

Intra-articular volume and hip joint instability in dogs with hip dysplasia.

UNLABELLED: The nature of the instability of the hip joint in dogs with dysplasia of the hip was investigated. In the experimental canine model, instability of the joint, as shown by subluxation of the femoral head on a roentgenogram, was accompanied by an increase in the volume of the synovial fluid and of the ligamentum teres and, therefore, an increase in the intra-articular volume. Injection of a buffered solution of hyaluronic acid into non-subluxated hip joints in situ increased subluxation, whereas withdrawal of synovial fluid from one joint with severe subluxation reduced the degree of

[Imaging of the anterior cruciate ligament and anterolateral rotational instability of the knee joint].

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is essential for the stability of the knee joint and ACL tears are one of the most common sports injuries with a high incidence, especially in sports that require rotational movements and abrupt changes in direction. Injuries of the ACL are rarely isolated and are often accompanied by meniscal and other internal knee injuries, which increase the risk of osteoarthritis. The spectrum of ACL injuries includes strains, partial tears and complete tears. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a pivotal role in the diagnostics as it can accurately depict not only

Unraveling Anatomical Variations of the Acromioclavicular Joint: A Comprehensive Inquiry Into Their Impact on Instability.

The acromioclavicular (AC) joint, an essential element in the complex biomechanics of the shoulder, displays a diverse range of anatomical variations among individuals. This review aimed to study and present these variations. A detailed search was conducted on the PubMed medical database by using the terms "acromioclavicular joint variations". Initially, 108 articles were retrieved and, after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, only 11 articles were found eligible. Eight more papers were selected from the citations in those 108 papers. As a result, a total of 19 papers and studies w

Alleviation of synovitis caused by joint instability with application of platelet-rich plasma.

INTRODUCTION: Synovitis is an early set and persistent change during the progression of osteoarthritis, which causes symptoms such as pain and swelling of the joints. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can release quantities of growth factors and cytokines, and is proved effected in promoting restoration of multiple soft tissues. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, twenty rabbits were used to establish animal model of synovitis, with the method of severing the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments and removing the medial meniscus. Then the rabbits were evenly divided into the PRP group and the

Controlling joint instability delays the degeneration of articular cartilage in a rat model.

OBJECTIVE: Joint instability induced by anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) transection is commonly considered as a predisposing factor for osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee; however, the influence of re-stabilization on the protection of articular cartilage is unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of joint re-stabilization on articular cartilage using an instability and re-stabilization ACL transection model. DESIGN: To induce different models of joint instability, our laboratory created a controlled abnormal joint movement (CAJM) group and an anterior cruciate ligament transe

Evaluation of Radiographic Instability of the Trapeziometacarpal Joint in Women With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

PURPOSE: To determine whether median nerve dysfunction measured by electrophysiologic studies in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is associated with thumb trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joint instability. METHODS: We evaluated 71 women with CTS and 31 asymptomatic control women. Patients with generalized laxity or TMC joint osteoarthritis were excluded. We classified the electrophysiologic severity of CTS based on nerve conduction time and amplitude and assessed radiographic instability of the TMC joint based on TMC joint stress radiographs. We compared subluxation ratio between patients with CTS and c

Instability of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ): a description of the problem and own experience.

Introduction. The distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) is important for rotation of the forearm and stability of the ulnar wrist. Any DRUJ injury can cause limitation of the range of motion, decreased strength, pain, and instability. This paper deals with DRUJ instability, and reviews treatment methods and outcome. Disturbances in DRUJ stability result from bone damage, TFCC and ligament injuries, and/or other soft tissue deficiencies (capsule, tendon). Instability due to injury may be acute or chronic in nature. Most acute cases are best treated conservatively. Chronic problems resulting in disabil

Loss of chondrolabral containment of the glenohumeral joint in atraumatic posteroinferior multidirectional instability.

BACKGROUND: Although the cause of posteroinferior instability of the shoulder has not been fully defined, glenoid version can be more completely measured when chondrolabral structures are included because conformity and containment of the glenohumeral joint are integral functions of both the articular cartilage and the labrum. The purpose of this study was to use magnetic resonance imaging-arthrography to evaluate the chondrolabral containment of the glenohumeral joint in patients with atraumatic posteroinferior multidirectional instability of the shoulder. METHODS: We evaluated four measurem

Autotraction stress roentgenography for demonstration anterior and inferior instability of the shoulder joint.

A form of stress roentgenography is presented for the diagnosis of anterior and inferior shoulder instabilities. Stress is induced by anterioinferior traction concentrated on the shoulder during extension of the flexed hip, when patients hold their legs on the side being examined, with both hands. The anterior and inferior shifts of the humeral head in relation to the glenoid fossa then are measured from anteroposterior and modified axillary roentgenograms. This method was employed in 16 shoulders with recurrent anterior dislocation, 11 recurrent anterior subluxations, nine multidirectional in

[Corrective osteotomy of the femur in the treatment of the syndromes of dysplastic instability of the hip joint].

On the basis of analysis of short-term outcomes (1-5 years) of treatment of 139 patients (150 joints) with congenital dislocation and oluzation of the thigh, conclusion has been drawn that the application of corrective femur osteotomy with these patients should be limited with the cases of formation of pathology loading of the joint under conditions of negative intercomponental trophism. Restoration of correct anatomical interrelations between the components of the joint can be accompanied by the clinical decompensation of the hip joint state. Anterolateral rotatory instability of the knee joint. An early analysis of the Ellison procedure.

Our experience with the Ellison procedure for the control of anterior subluxation of the lateral tibial plateau includes fifty-two knees in which we used this procedure either alone or in combination with other reconstructive procedures. The results directly attributable to the Ellison procedure itself after follow-ups of six months or more could be evaluated in fifteen patients who had only the Ellison procedure for anterolateral instability and in thirteen who had both this procedure and a pes anserinus transfer for combined anterolateral and anteromedial instability. Of the twenty-eight pat

[Minimally Invasive Techniques for the Treatment of Acute and Chronic Acromioclavicular Joint Instabilities].

Acromioclavicular joint instabilities are one of the most common injuries of the shoulder girdle. Diagnostic measures include the vertical and horizontal components of instability. The main goals of treatment include pain reduction, joint stabilization, and return to physical activity. For operative treatment, there are numerous techniques available. Recently, minimally-invasive techniques were developed and showed equal results as with open approach. These procedures facilitate simultaneous treatment of concomitant shoulder lesions and reduce soft tissue trauma as well as the risk of infectio
