The farther, the earlier: perceived depth biases temporal order judgments.

Temporal order perception is essential for understanding the succession of events, and is suggested to be affected by attention or metaphorical space-time mapping. Attention theories predict that near or large objects capture attention and enter into consciousness earlier, while the metaphor hypothesis links the concepts of 'far' and 'past' in many languages, predicting that far objects is perceived as appearing earlier. This study investigated temporal order perception in three-dimensional (3D) space to clarify its underlying mechanism. Across three experiments, participants performed a tempo

Are Human Judgments of Real and Fake Faces Quantum-like Contextual?

This paper describes a crowdsourced experiment in which participants were asked to judge which of two simultaneously presented facial images (one real, one AI-generated) was fake. With the growing presence of synthetic imagery in digital environments, cognitive systems must adapt to novel and often deceptive visual stimuli. Recent developments in cognitive science propose that some mental processes may exhibit quantum-like characteristics, particularly in their context sensitivity. Drawing on Tezzin's "generalized fair coin" model, this study applied Contextuality-by-Default (CbD) theory to in

The Effect of Rating Method on Reliability of Judgments of Strain Across Populations.

PURPOSE: Variability in auditory-perceptual ratings of voice limits their utility, with the poorest reliability often noted for vocal strain. The purpose of this study was to determine whether an experimental method, called visual sort and rate (VSR), promoted stronger rater reliability than visual analog scale (VAS), for ratings of strain in two clinical populations: adductor laryngeal dystonia (ADLD) and vocal hyperfunction (VH). METHOD: Connected speech samples from speakers with ADLD and VH as well as age- and sex-matched controls were selected from a database. Fifteen inexperienced liste

Graphical Depiction of Statistical Information Improves Gambling-Related Judgments.

The domain of gambling is rife with both diagnostic and non-diagnostic information. Previous studies examining scratch card gambling have demonstrated that people are often biased by intuitively appealing, yet non-diagnostic information (i.e., unclaimed prize information). The current study investigated how varying the presentation format of a diagnostic piece of information (i.e., payback percentage) could influence participants' use of this information when in conflict with unclaimed prize information. We hypothesized that when payback percentage information was presented in a graphical, as

Reconciling the opposing effects of neurobiological evidence on criminal sentencing judgments.

Legal theorists have characterized physical evidence of brain dysfunction as a double-edged sword, wherein the very quality that reduces the defendant's responsibility for his transgression could simultaneously increase motivations to punish him by virtue of his apparently increased dangerousness. However, empirical evidence of this pattern has been elusive, perhaps owing to a heavy reliance on singular measures that fail to distinguish between plural, often competing internal motivations for punishment. The present study employed a test of the theorized double-edge pattern using a novel appro

Intrasexual Competition as a Predictor of Women's Judgments of Revenge Pornography Offending.

Recent legislative developments have led to a marked increase in the empirical investigation of motivations and judgments of so-called acts of "revenge pornography" offending. In two independently sampled studies, we used moderation analyses to investigate whether higher levels of intrasexual competition predicted more lenient judgments of revenge pornography offenses as a function of sex (Study 1, N = 241), and whether such relationships would be further moderated by physical attractiveness (Study 2, N = 402). Potential covariates of callous-unemotional traits, empathy, and victimization hist

Self-Judgments of Word Production Accuracy in Acquired Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: The ability to recognize one's own speech errors has long been considered a clinical feature of acquired apraxia of speech (AOS) despite limited empirical data supporting this notion. This study was designed to (a) investigate the ability of speakers with AOS to self-judge the accuracy of their own word productions and (b) examine the test-retest stability of a measure to quantify the self-judgments of speakers with AOS. METHOD: Twenty-four speakers with AOS and aphasia repeated mono- and multisyllabic words. After each word, they indicated whether their production was correct or inc

A pathological scoring system in the diagnosis and judgment of prognosis of biliary atresia.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of a histological scoring system in biliary atresia (BA). METHODS: From June 2013 to July 2014, 86 wedge liver biopsy specimens were obtained from infants with neonatal cholestasis (58 patients with biliary atresia and 28 patients with non-obstructive cholestasis as control) in our center. A pathologist, single-blinded to the final diagnosis, made the histological diagnosis individually based on an 8-feature (liver fibrosis, portal ductal proliferation, bile plugs in portal ductules, cholestasis, hepatoce

Cortical and subcortical contributions to state- and strength-based perceptual judgments.

UNLABELLED: Perceptual judgments can be made on the basis of different kinds of information: state-based access to specific details that differentiate two similar images, or strength-based assessments of relational match/mismatch. We explored state- and strength-based perception in eleven right-hemisphere stroke patients, and examined lesion overlap images to gain insight into the neural underpinnings of these different kinds of perceptual judgments. Patients and healthy controls were presented with pairs of scenes that were either identical or differed in that one scene was slightly expanded

Multisensory self-motion compensation during object trajectory judgments.

Judging object trajectory during self-motion is a fundamental ability for mobile organisms interacting with their environment. This fundamental ability requires the nervous system to compensate for the visual consequences of self-motion in order to make accurate judgments, but the mechanisms of this compensation are poorly understood. We comprehensively examined both the accuracy and precision of observers' ability to judge object trajectory in the world when self-motion was defined by vestibular, visual, or combined visual-vestibular cues. Without decision feedback, subjects demonstrated no c

Multimodally specified energy expenditure and action-based distance judgments.

Previous research has demonstrated that perceived self-motion can be manipulated by the relation between optic flow rate and walking rate. Other studies have revealed that verbal reports of perceived distance are influenced by the energy that would be expended to traverse the distance in question. In an effort to integrate these findings, we investigated how action-based distance judgments are influenced by multimodally specified energy expenditure (MSEE)--the metabolic cost associated with traversing an optically specified distance--using a virtual-reality treadmill environment. The energy ex

The impetus theory in judgments about object motion: a new perspective.

Several tendencies found in explicit judgments about object motion have been interpreted as evidence that people possess a naive theory of impetus. The theory states that objects that are caused to move by other objects acquire force that determines the kind of motion exhibited by the object, and that this force gradually dissipates over time. I argue that the findings can better be understood as manifestations of a general understanding of externally caused motion based on experiences of acting on objects. Experiences of acting on objects yield the idea that properties of the cause of motion

Judgments toward male and transgendered victims in a depicted stranger rape.

There has been an increasing amount of research interest into perceptions of male rape in recent years. However, no research has assessed how people react when a transgendered person is raped. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of transgendered status and sexuality on victim blame and perceived severity in a depicted rape scenario. The sexuality of the victim was manipulated to include a heterosexual, homosexual, cross-dresser, female-to-male transsexual, and male-to-female transsexual. It was predicted that the heterosexual victims would be judged the most positively and tha

Reach distance but not judgment error is associated with falls in older people.

BACKGROUND: Reaching is a vital action requiring precise motor coordination and attempting to reach for objects that are too far away can destabilize balance and result in falls and injury. This could be particularly important for many elderly people with age-related loss of sensorimotor function and a reduced ability to recover balance. Here, we investigate the interaction between reaching ability, errors in judging reach, and the incidence of falling (retrospectively and prospectively) in a large cohort of older people. METHODS: Participants (n = 415, 70-90 years) had to estimate the furthe

The effect of speaking task on perceptual judgment of the severity of dysphonic voice.

This study investigated the effect of speaking task on auditory-perceptual judgment of the severity of dysphonia. Three speech-language pathologists experienced in evaluating of disordered voices rated 29 recorded speakers, each of whom produced speech elicited via the same three tasks: sustained vowel /a/, oral reading of a standard passage, and connected speech describing a standard picture. Stimuli were played in sound field, and raters used direct magnitude estimation with a visual analog scale. A repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed a statistically significant (P < .05)

Time-to-contact judgments of an approaching object that is partially concealed by an occluder.

Prior studies of time-to-contact (TTC) focused on judgments of unoccluded approaching objects. P. R. DeLucia, M. K. Kaiser, J. M. Bush, L. E. Meyer, and B. T. Sweet (2003) showed that partial occlusion decreases an object's optical size and expansion rate and that the value of tau derived from the reduced optical size (relative rate of accretion; RRA) does not necessarily correspond to TTC. In the present study, a computer-generated object approached the observer while unoccluded or partially concealed by a stationary or moving occluder. In some scenes, the occluder's motion nullified the obje

Concordance of clinical findings and clinical judgment in the diagnosis of streptococcal pharyngitis.

OBJECTIVE: It is uncertain how reliably clinicians apply clinical predictors of group A beta hemolytic streptococcal pharyngitis (GABHSP) to form a clinical impression, and how reliably this impression predicts culture results. The objective was to study clinician accuracy in diagnosing GABHSP. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study, conducted at an urgent care center of a major university. A convenience sample of 218 patients, aged 9-83 years, presenting with sore throat, was enrolled. Symptoms and signs of pharyngitis were documented on a standardized form; the likelihood of GABHSP wa

Use of situational judgment test for evaluating nonacademic attributes in ophthalmology fellowship selection.

PURPOSE: In medical fellowship selection, evaluating both academic and nonacademic attributes is essential for clinical success. This study integrates cognitive assessments with construct-driven situational judgment tests (SJTs) to evaluate nonacademic traits, aiming to identify well-rounded candidates during the ophthalmology fellowship selection process. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 68 candidates who appeared for the interview in 2024. Academic attributes were assessed through structured interviews in which candidates prepared and delivered PowerPoint presentations on
