Superficial X-ray-induced hyperpigmentation in postoperative keloid radiotherapy: A study of 70 keloids to identify clinical features and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative radiation is one of the most effective treatments for keloid. Radiation-induced hyperpigmentation is, however, a concern for both patients and dermatologists. AIMS: To identify clinical features and risk factors of superficial X-ray-induced hyperpigmentation in postoperative keloid radiotherapy. PATIENTS/METHODS: From November 2019 to November 2020, 70 keloids in 55 patients were treated with superficial X-ray after surgery. Patient data and treatment-related parameters were collected. Follow-up photographs were taken one month after radiotherapy. Three independent

Epidemiology of keloids among university students in Uganda.

Keloids are benign yet persistent fibroproliferative disorders characterized by raised, irregular scars that extend beyond the original wound margins. In addition to causing disfiguring scars, pain, and restricted mobility, keloids significantly impact psychosocial well-being, often leading to emotional distress and socioeconomic challenges for the affected individuals. Although keloids are recognized as being most prevalent among individuals of African descent, there remains a paucity of epidemiological data on their prevalence in African populations. This gap in knowledge has contributed to

Intralesional 5-Fluorouracil for Keloids: A Systematic Review.

Keloids are benign, fibroproliferative dermal tumours, often arising after trauma, that are more common in darker skin types. Numerous therapeutic options have been employed for the treatment of keloids; however, there is no one gold standard approach. Five-fluorouracil, a potent chemotherapeutic agent, has emerged as a promising therapeutic option. Therefore, this systematic review, using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, focused on providing a broad overview of the use of 5-fluorouracil for the management of keloids. Forty studies (2325 p

[Status of diagnosis and treatment of hypertrophic scar and keloid].

In recent years, many high-quality studies have been conducted on the pathomechanism and treatment of hypertrophic scar and keloid. This article briefly summarizes the status in these two aspects. Hypertrophic scar and keloid belong to pathological scar, which is characterized by fibrous dysplasia of reticular layer of dermis. This abnormal hyperplasia is due to the chronic inflammatory reaction in the dermis caused by injury. Some risk factors affect the process and outcome of the scar by increasing the intensity and duration of the inflammatory reaction. It is effective to understand the rel

Bilateral corneal keloids after eyelid compression.

The purpose of this study is to present a case of bilateral corneal keloids after performing eyelid compression for half a year. This study was a retrospective case report. Visual acuity, as well as detailed high-resolution images of external eye photography, anterior segment optical coherence tomography (ASOCT), and topography were documented. Initially, the best-corrected visual acuities were 20/20 (OD) and 20/32 (OS). ASOCT revealed a characteristic irregular hyperplastic epithelium, a disrupted Bowman's layer, and an edematous stroma for both eyes. Topography exposed an irregular astigmati

The role of macrophages in the formation of hypertrophic scars and keloids.

Numerous studies have shown that macrophages can orchestrate the microenvironment from the early stage of wound healing to the later stages of scar formation. However, few reviews have highlighted the significance of macrophages during the formation of abnormal scars. The purpose of this review was to outline the polarization of macrophages from early to late stage of pathological scar formation, focusing on spatiotemporal diversity of M1 and M2 macrophages. In this review, the role of macrophages in the formation of hypertrophic scars and keloids is summarized in detail. First, an increased n

Adverse Effects of Pregnancy on Keloids and Hypertrophic Scars.

There are many well-known risk factors for keloids and hypertrophic scars (HTS) including ethnicity, family history, and history of previous keloids or HTS. An association, which has been previously observed, exists between pregnancy and growth and worsening of keloid and HTS. This association is less well known amongst physicians and less documented in the literature. In this paper we discuss two cases of extreme worsening of keloid scars during pregnancy. We have also witnessed the transformation of a pre-existing scar into a keloid scar during puberty. We attribute this to the hormonal effe

Erosive Arthritis, Fibromatosis, and Keloids: A Rare Dermatoarthropathy.

Polyfibromatosis is a rare disease characterized by fibrosis manifesting in different locations. It is commonly characterized by palmar fibromatosis (Dupuytren's contracture) in variable combinations with plantar fibromatosis (Ledderhose's disease), penile fibromatosis (Peyronie's disease), knuckle pads, and keloids. There are only three reported cases of polyfibromatosis and keloids with erosive arthritis. We report one such case and review the existing literature on this rare syndrome.

Intralesional cryotherapy for hypertrophic scars and keloids: a review.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertrophic and keloid scarring remain notoriously troublesome for patients to tolerate and frustratingly difficult for clinicians to treat. Many different treatment modalities exist, signifying the failure of any method to achieve consistently excellent results. Intralesional cryotherapy is a relatively recent development that uses a double lumen needle, placed through the core of a keloid or hypertrophic scar, to deliver nitrogen vapour, which freezes the scar from its core, outwards. METHODS: This article provides a comprehensive review of the literature on intralesional cry

Treatment of earlobe keloids by surgical excision and cryosurgery.

BACKGROUND: The long-term results of keloid treatments remain poor. OBJECTIVE: To assess the long-term efficacy of a technique combining surgical excision and immediate cryosurgery in patients with ear keloids. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed between January 2001 and June 2011. All patients referred for treatment of an ear keloid and undergoing subsequent surgical excision followed by immediate freezing of the postoperative wound using cryosurgery were included. The primary end-point was the number of patients who achieved major flattening of the keloid (defined as a reduction o

Intralesional treatment for keloids and hypertrophic scars: a review.

BACKGROUND: Although differing in clinical presentation and prognosis, keloids and hypertrophic scars are generally characterized by abnormally proliferative scar tissue and are extremely debilitating. Several intralesional therapies have been studied in attempts to find a universally safe and effective modality, of which there are currently none. OBJECTIVE: To provide a comprehensive review of current intralesional treatment modalities for keloids and hypertrophic scars. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A PubMed search was performed for literature pertaining to intralesional treatment modalities for

Two patients with penile keloids: a review of the literature.

Keloid formation on the penis is exceptionally rare even though the penis is frequently subjected to surgical manipulations such as circumcision. Review of the literature revealed a few reports of patients with penile keloids. A 13-year-old Caucasian boy who had a pronounced penile keloid after circumcision and a 56-year-old Caucasian male who had keloid formation on the dorsum of the shaft of the penis after several attacks of penoscrotal hidradenitis suppurativa are presented. They comprise the fifth and the sixth cases of keloid formation in the literature to our knowledge. Intralesional st

Wide spread scars, hypertrophic scars, and keloids.

Patients with a wide scar may complain of having a "keloid," yet have a hypertrophic or a wide spread scar. The plastic surgeon should make the appropriate clinical diagnosis, because therapy varies depending on the condition present. A wide spread scar is best treated with excision and closure. A buried dermal flap may help to prevent recurrence, which is nevertheless likely to some degree. A hypertrophic scar can be distinguished from a keloid on clinical grounds. Although both may be red, nodular, and itchy, the keloid overgrows the original wound boundary and is much more likely to recur a

Surgical treatment of keloids secondary to ear piercing.

Keloids are medically benign, but often psychologically and cosmetically malignant lesions. They are most commonly located on the posterior aspect of the ear lobes. The author's treatment of choice is the combined intralesional steroid and surgical approach. Surgically, the best results are obtained when some of the skin overlying the keloid is used as a split thickness graft after all of the keloidal tissue has been removed. Explicit postoperative wound care instructions are important in insuring complication-free surgery.

Identification and validation of mitotic catastrophe-associated biomarkers for keloid.

PURPOSE: Exploring the role of mitotic catastrophe-related genes (MCRGs) in the development of keloid, a benign skin disorder. METHODS: Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between keloid and normal tissues were identified. Candidate genes at the intersection of DEGs and MCRGs were selected. Protein-protein interaction network, machine learning, and expression analyses allowed the identification of keloid-associated biomarkers. Nomogram construction, Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA), and immune cell infiltration, molecular regulatory network, drug prediction, and molecular docking analyse

Modified Surgical Technique Combined with Radiation Therapy for Keloid Management.

BACKGROUND: Keloids are skin proliferative lesions with tumor-like characteristics. Their treatment is challenging due to their high recurrence rate. The most effective treatment against keloids is surgical excision with radiotherapy. However, the recurrence rate remains high. METHODS: In this study, we modified the surgical technique by reducing the tension of an area three times larger than the residual wound area. We treated 89 patients using the modified surgical excision procedure with radiotherapy, and we assessed the appearance of the scar using the Vancouver scar scale (VSS) score. R
