Adenoid cystic carcinoma cytology: Salivary gland and nonsalivary gland.

OBJECTIVES: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACCA) is an uncommon primary malignancy of salivary glands and rarely nonsalivary tissue. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of ACCA on fine needle aspiration (FNA) material and the associated challenges. METHODS: A search on electronic pathology database from 2006 to 2016 at The Johns Hopkins Hospital found 83 cytology specimens diagnosed as ACCA, 49 with histology follow-up. RESULTS: Fifty-two females and 31 males were found ranging from 37 to 95 years old (mean 62.5). The tumor size was 1 to 11.5 cm (mean 3.4). FNAs were performed on

Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the kidney in an HIV-positive patient: A case report.

RATIONALE: Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a very rare malignant neoplasm arising from clonal proliferation of atypical plasma cells. Most EMPs involve mucosal lymphoid tissue, particularly in the nasopharyngeal area, respiratory tract, and head and neck region. Such neoplasms of the kidney in patients with a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are extremely rare. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 55-year-old male who had been diagnosed with HIV 1 year previously presented with a 2-week history of intermittent right abdominal pain and gross hematuria. DIAGNOSES: Ultrasonography and computed

Post-transplant small cell carcinoma arising in the native kidney of renal transplant recipient.

Small cell carcinoma (SCC) originating from kidney is extremely rare. To date, there has been no reported case of primary SCC of renal transplant recipients' (RTRs)' own kidney. Here, we report the first case of primary SCC of RTRs' own kidney. Resection of bilateral native kidneys, possessing whole length of ureters and small cuffs of bladder along with a neoplasm located in her right kidney, was performed on a 68-year-old female patient, five years after renal transplantation. The immuno-histochemical result confirmed mixed SCC of the right kidney (SCC combined with little transitional cell

Angiomyolipomas of the mediastinum and the lung.

Angiomyolipomas are benign neoplasms composed of various tissues, including components of fat, abnormal blood vessels, and smooth muscle cells. They most commonly occur in the kidney, but on rare occasions they occur in extrarenal sites. We present a case of angiomyolipomas in the mediastinum and lung, possibly associated with lymphangioleiomyomatosis and tuberous sclerosis complex.

Case report: Multimodality imaging of a cystic nephroma.

Cystic nephroma is a rare, benign, cystic neoplasm of the kidney. Its defining features include a discrete, complex cystic mass with multiple thin septations. Cystic nephroma often is confused with many different complex cystic masses of the kidney such as mixed epithelial stromal tumors, Wilms tumors, and cystic renal cell carcinoma. Patients typically do not present with symptoms, and it is often an incidental finding on imaging procedures for other diagnoses. Treatment for cystic nephroma can vary from frequent follow-up to nephrectomy or kidney-sparing surgery.

Unilateral multicystic renal disease in adults.

Patients with multicystic kidneys that remained undetected for many years are currently our best source of information on the long-term fate of this type of renal dysplasia. We review 24 cases with adequate data reported in the literature and add 3 personal cases. Significant problems that were encountered and were related to these retained multicystic kidneys include abdominal pain, erroneous diagnosis of renal agenesis leading to repeated unrewarding medical studies for abdominal pain, abdominal mass and renal neoplasm arising in the dysplastic kidney.

[Renal pleomorphic sarcoma in four guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus)].

OBJECTIVE: Renal tumours apparently are rare not only in cats and dogs, but also in guinea pigs and can be difficult to diagnose. The aim of this study is to describe the clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical findings in guinea pigs with renal tumours. Furthermore, the symptoms, diagnostic possibilities and therapy are compared with renal tumours in other small animals, including cats and dogs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: During a period of 4 years and 4 months the data of guinea pigs that had been presented in the clinic were retrospectively analysed. The analysis comprised guinea pigs th

Patients with a new-onset cutaneous sebaceous neoplasm following immunosuppression should be evaluated for Muir-Torre syndrome with germline mismatch repair gene mutation analysis: case reports.

Patients with Muir-Torre syndrome may have a systemic malignancy and a sebaceous neoplasm such as an adenoma, epithelioma, and/or carcinoma. The syndrome usually results from a germline mutation in one or more mismatch repair genes. Iatrogenic or acquired immunosuppression can promote the appearance of sebaceous tumors, either as an isolated event or as a feature of Muir-Torre syndrome and may unmask individuals genetically predisposed to the syndrome. Two iatrogenically immunosuppressed men with Muir-Torre syndrome features are described. Similar to these immunocompromised men, Muir-Torre syn

Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystic neoplasm of borderline malignancy with KRAS and GNAS co-mutation: a case report.

Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystic neoplasms are rare retroperitoneal tumors, which are histologically similar to mucinous cystic neoplasms of the ovaries. Only 31 cases of primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystic neoplasm with borderline malignancy (PRMCN-BM) have been reported (26 in women and five in men). We describe an additional male patient with PRMCN-BM. A 39-year-old man presented to our hospital with back pain. Twelve years earlier, he had undergone an orchiectomy for a germ cell tumor. Computed tomography showed a 6.9- × 4.4-cm cystic mass in the left pararenal space. Laparoscop

Inhalation toxicology and carcinogenesis studies of propylene glycol mono-t-butyl ether in rats and mice.

Propylene glycol mono-t-butyl ether (PGMBE) is used as a solvent in a variety of commercial applications. Male and female F344/N rats and B6C3F(1) mice were exposed to PGMBE by whole-body inhalation for 2 or 14 weeks (0, 75, 150, 300, 600, or 1200 ppm) or 2 years (0, 75, 300, or 1200 ppm); male NBR rats were exposed for 2 weeks. The kidney and the liver were targets of PGMBE toxicity in rats. Renal lesions suggestive of alpha(2u)-globulin nephropathy were observed in male F344/N, in the 2 and 14-week studies, no kidney lesions were seen in NBR rats. In the 2-year study, male rats displayed exp

Solitary fibrous tumor of the kidney.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an unusual spindle cell neoplasm rarely described in the kidney. Usually occurring in the pleura, it has also been described in various extrapleural sites. We report a rare case of SFT of the kidney fortuitously found in a 55-year-old patient. The imaging features are illustrated. The definite diagnosis was made through histological and immunohistochemical study after radical nephrectomy.

The solitary fibrous malignant tumour of the kidney: clinical and pathological considerations on a case revisiting the literature.

The solitary fibrous tumours (SFT) are rare spindle cell neoplasms which generally originate from the pleura; also described are cases of SFT in other locations, included the genital-urinary tract. Described in the ambit the kidney are 19 cases of SFT and such rarity of localisation makes rather unknown the histogenesis and the prognosis of the lesion. We report the case of a 72 year old lady who attended our Unit for a mass which was clinically palpable at the level of the left hemiabdomen. Following an abdominal ultrasound scan a neoformation was highlighted which a successive tomodensitogra

Primary de novo malignant giant cell tumor of kidney: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Osteoclast-like giant cell tumors are usually observed in osseous tissue or as tumors of tendon sheath, characterized by the presence of multinucleated giant cells and mononuclear stromal cells. It has been reported in various extraosseous sites including breast, skin, soft tissue, salivary glands, lung, pancreas, female genital tract, thyroid, larynx and heart. However, extraosseous occurrence of such giant cell tumors in the kidney is extremely rare and is usually found in combination with a conventional malignancy. De-novo primary malignant giant cell tumors of the kidney are un

Glomangioma of the Renal Artery: A Rare Case of a Glomus Tumor.

Glomus tumors are rare mesenchymal neoplasms originating from the glomus bodies of the skin. When found in the kidney, these tumors are uncommon, with very few documented cases in the medical literature. Our comprehensive review identified only a very limited number of reported primary renal glomus tumors. Although the majority of these tumors are benign, two cases have been reported as malignant and one as having indeterminate malignant potential. We describe a rare case: a 69-year-old male patient with a history of transitional cell bladder cancer and possible local recurrence in the anatomi

Ultrasonography of the Kidneys in Healthy and Diseased Camels (Camelus dromedarius).

This review article is written to describe the results of ultrasonography of the kidneys in healthy camels as well as camels with some renal disorders. In the dromedary camel, the physiology of the kidney is of interest in view of the specialization of the camel to hot dry deserts and to prolonged periods without water. It plays an important role in water conservation through the production of highly concentrated urine that may predispose animal to varieties of renal disorders. Examples of kidney affections in dromedary camels are renal capsular pigmentation, medullary hyperemia, subcapsular c

Histiocyte-Rich Renal Epithelial Neoplasm: A Morphology Associated With Folliculin Mutations and Birt-Hogg-Dubé Syndrome.

So-called hybrid oncocytic tumor (HOT) is the renal neoplasm most commonly associated with the germline folliculin ( FLCN ) mutations that define Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome. However, the spectrum of renal epithelial neoplasms associated with FLCN gene mutations has recently expanded to include neoplasms with somatic FLCN mutations and those with variant morphology. Some of these FLCN -mutated neoplasms overlap morphologically and immunohistochemically with TSC/MTOR -mutated and TFE3/TFEB fusion renal cell carcinomas, which makes sense given their overlapping genetic pathways. One morphology that

Renal transplacental carcinogenicity of 3,3-dimethyl-1-phenyltriazene in rats: relationship of renal mesenchymal tumor to congenital mesoblastic nephroma and intralobar nephrogenic rests.

Exposure of rat embryos to 3,3-dimethyl-1-phenyltriazene (DMPT) results in numerous malformations, but the urogenital system is not affected. In contrast, exposure of rat fetuses to DMPT has been reported to result in renal neoplasms, which were not further classified. To better understand this discrepancy in organotropism of the teratogenic and transplacental carcinogenic processes, the present study was undertaken to characterize the neoplasms induced in rat fetuses exposed to DMPT in utero. Renal neoplasms and persistent mesenchyme were observed in 19.2 and 11.5%, respectively, of the offsp

Malignant solitary fibrous tumour of the kidney with an extensive thrombus: A case report and review of the literature.

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are neoplasms originating from mesenchymal cells, usually found in lung pleura. Extrapleuritic lesions are extremely rare, with about 60 cases of SFTs of the kidney available in the English literature. We report here the first case of a malignant SFT of the kidney presenting with an extensive vascular thrombus extending to the right atrium with associated pulmonary emboli. We describe management, pathological assessment, as well as radiological and clinical evolution. Our report provides a first therapeutic approach to a critical presentation of a rare pathology
