Visuomotor deficits and fast recovery after area V6A lesion in monkeys.

In order to study the involvement of area V6A in visually guided behavior, restricted lesions to the anterior bank of the parieto-occipital sulcus (POs) were made in two adult Cercopithecus aethiops monkeys, trained in visuomotor tests. Beside the known clinical signs of parietal deficit (abnormal posture of the arm contralateral to the most recent lesion and reluctance to use it), misreaching was evident soon after surgery and disappeared quickly. Uncertainties in a landmark test and prolonged response times to the pressing of light-buttons lasted for a few weeks and 1 month, respectively. As

Failure to recognise objects by active touch (astereognosia) results from lesion of parietal-cortex representation of finger kinaesthesis.

The inability to identify objects by manipulation with eyes closed (astereognosia) results from a focal cortical lesion of the second order parietal area 2, which integrates inputs from finger joints with tactile information.

Effect of alcohol on the threshold for detecting angular acceleration.

We investigated the effects of a low blood alcohol level (mean BAC = 0.037%) on subjects' ability to detect acceleration and deceleration of angular motion. The angular motion thresholds of six alcohol and six placebo subjects, all of whom had private pilot certificates, were tested under double-blind conditions in an enclosed simulator apparatus prior to drinking, after drinking, and at a time when the BAC's of alcohol subjects had reached zero. Mean threshold values for the three threshold determination sessions were 0.282, 0.376, and 0.343 degrees.s-2 respectively for the alcohol subjects,

Vection: the contributions of absolute and relative visual motion.

Inspection of a visual scene rotating about the vertical body axis induces a compelling sense of self rotation, or circular vection. Circular vection is suppressed by stationary objects seen beyond the moving display but not by stationary objects in the foreground. We hypothesised that stationary objects in the foreground facilitate vection because they introduce a relative-motion signal into what would otherwise be an absolute-motion signal. Vection latency and magnitude were measured with a full-field moving display and with stationary objects of various sizes and at various positions in the

Efficacy of kinesthetic motor imagery based brain computer interface combined with tDCS on upper limb function in subacute stroke.

This study investigates whether the combined effect of kinesthetic motor imagery-based brain computer interface (KI-BCI) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on upper limb function in subacute stroke patients is more effective than using KI-BCI or tDCS alone. Forty-eight subacute stroke survivors were randomized to the KI-BCI, tDCS, or BCI-tDCS group. The KI-BCI group performed 30 min of KI-BCI training. Patients in tDCS group received 30 min of tDCS. Patients in BCI-tDCS group received 15 min of tDCS and 15 min of KI-BCI. The treatment cycle was five times a week, for four weeks

Prospective study on the efficacy of optokinetic training in the treatment of seasickness.

OBJECTIVES: Seasickness corresponds to all of the clinical symptoms experienced by a subject at sea related to boat movements. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of optokinetic training versus placebo in the treatment of seasickness. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifteen subjects were randomized to either an optokinetic training arm or a placebo arm. The impact of seasickness was evaluated for each subject before and after optokinetic training using the Graybiel scale. RESULTS: Among the trained subjects, 71.4% were improved by optokinetic training versus 12.5% of control subje

Reflections on clinical applications of yoga in voice therapy with MTD.

This paper explores the application of modified yoga techniques, as an adjunct to voice therapy, by a speech pathologist who is also a yoga teacher. Yoga practices, with effects that may be short-term, are not considered a substitute for comprehensive and integrated somatic retraining systems (such as the Alexander Technique or Feldenkrais ATM). However, when yoga is conducted emphasizing kinaesthetic and proprioceptive awareness, the client may achieve an 'awareness state' that facilitates the learning of vocal remediation techniques (for example, by more easily 'tuning in' to the subtle sens

Age-dependent modulation of sensory reweighting for controlling posture in a dynamic virtual environment.

Older adults require more time to reweight sensory information for maintaining balance that could potentially lead to increased incidence of falling in rapidly changing or cognitively demanding environments. In this study, we manipulated the visual surround information during a collision avoidance task in order to investigate how young and elderly adults engage in sensory reweighting under conditions of visual anticipation. Sixteen healthy elderly (age: 71.5 ± 4.9 years; height: 159.3 ± 6.6 cm; mass: 73.3 ± 3.3 kg) and 20 young (age: 22.8 ± 3.3 years; height: 174.4 ± 10.7 cm; mass: 70.1 ± 13.9

Depth of ankle inversion and discrimination of foot positions.

Ankle inversion injuries are common, yet little is known about the error associated with different positions as inversion depth increases. In this study, absolute judgments made without feedback were used to measure discrimination of different extents of ankle inversion which arose from active movements made to physical stops by 20 self-reported right side-dominant participants. Testing was conducted over three sets of five inversion depths that were within a range of 1.4 degrees and centered around mean depths of 8,11, and 14 degrees. Discrimination of ankle inversion movements decreased line

Sensorimotor function as a predictor of chronic ankle instability.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent ankle injury occurs in 70% of individuals experiencing a lateral ankle sprain. The cause of this high level of recurrence is currently unknown. Researchers have begun to investigate sensorimotor deficits as one possible cause with inconclusive and often conflicting results. The purpose of this study was to further the understanding of the role of sensorimotor deficits in the chronically unstable ankle by establishing which specific measures best distinguish between chronically unstable and healthy ankles. METHODS: Twenty-two participants with chronic ankle instability an

Evidence for an attraction account of closing-in behaviour.

"Closing-in behaviour" (CIB) is a phenomenon observed on copying and imitation tasks, in which the copy is made inappropriately close to or on top of the model. CIB is classified clinically as a manifestation of constructional apraxia (CA), but its underlying causes are not understood. Compensation hypotheses propose that CIB is a strategic adaptation to underlying deficits in visuospatial and/or memory functions. The attraction hypothesis suggests that CIB reflects a primitive default behaviour in which the acting hand is drawn towards the focus of visual attention. We tested between these hy

Effects of diminished and conflicting sensory information on balance in patients with cerebellar deficits.

We studied the effects of altered sensory information on standing balance in 25 patients with cortical cerebellar atrophy (CCA), nine patients with olivoponto-cerebellar atrophy (OPCA), and 10 normal subjects. The total sway path and its components, the anteroposterior (AP) sway path and the lateral sway path, were measured under six conditions: (1) standing on a fixed platform with the eyes open and visual surroundings fixed, (2) standing on a fixed platform with the eyes closed, (3) standing on a fixed platform with the eyes open and visual surroundings AP sway referenced, (4) standing on an

Intersegmental and local interneurons in the metathorax of the stick insect Carausius morosus that monitor middle leg position.

1. In the stick insect, proprioceptive information from the middle leg is used to define the target for the swing movement of the adjacent rear leg ("targeting behavior"). To investigate the underlying neural circuits, intracellular recordings were made in the ganglion controlling the rear leg, the metathoracic ganglion, while systematically moving the tarsus of the middle leg. 2. Several intersegmental interneurons and one local interneuron were identified as possible contributors to the targeting behavior. The intersegmental interneurons code the position of the middle leg tarsus in a highly

Prehension movements directed to approaching objects: influence of stimulus velocity on the transport and the grasp components.

In this investigation we studied the influence of object velocity on the transport and on the grasp components of prehension movements directed to approaching objects. Three experiments were carried out. In the first experiment six subjects were required to reach and grasp a sphere that approached them with a constant velocity. The effects of four velocities were studied. The results showed that the end point of the arm movement changed with object velocity: nearer the body with higher than with lower object velocities. Transport velocity increased with movement amplitude and the deceleration

Biofeedback treatment of genu-recurvatum using an electrogoniometric device with an acoustic signal. One-year follow-up.

The aim was to evaluate the effect of a biofeedback electrogoniometer in the control of recurvation of the knee while walking in patients with neurological diseases. Eighteen patients were trained daily for 12.8 sessions on average with an electrogoniometer attached to the knee, which gave a signal at a threshold value of 180 degrees in order to avoid hypertension of the knee. The improvement was statistically significant even after one year.

Interactive Virtual Ankle Movement Controlled by Wrist sEMG Improves Motor Imagery: An Exploratory Study.

Virtual reality (VR) techniques can significantly enhance motor imagery training by creating a strong illusion of action for central sensory stimulation. In this article, we establish a precedent by using surface electromyography (sEMG) of contralateral wrist movement to trigger virtual ankle movement through an improved data-driven approach with a continuous sEMG signal for fast and accurate intention recognition. Our developed VR interactive system can provide feedback training for stroke patients in the early stages, even if there is no active ankle movement. Our objectives are to evaluate:

Disrupted integration of sensory stimuli with information about the movement of the body as a mechanism explaining LSD-induced experience.

LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) is a model psychedelic drug used to study mechanism underlying the effects induced by hallucinogens. However, despite advanced knowledge about molecular mechanism responsible for the effects induced by LSD and other related substances acting at serotonergic 5-HT2a receptors, we still do not understand how these drugs trigger specific sensory experiences. LSD-induced experience is characterised by perception of movement in the environment and by presence of various bodily sensations such as floating in space, merging into surroundings and movement out of the phy
