The Importance of the Knee Joint Meniscal Fibrocartilages as Stabilizing Weight Bearing Structures Providing Global Protection to Human Knee-Joint Tissues.

The aim of this study was to review aspects of the pathobiology of the meniscus in health and disease and show how degeneration of the meniscus can contribute to deleterious changes in other knee joint components. The menisci, distinctive semilunar weight bearing fibrocartilages, provide knee joint stability, co-ordinating functional contributions from articular cartilage, ligaments/tendons, synovium, subchondral bone and infra-patellar fat pad during knee joint articulation. The meniscus contains metabolically active cell populations responsive to growth factors, chemokines and inflammatory c

[Angular and torsional malalignments of the paediatric knee joint].

BACKGROUND: Abnormal angular and torsional alignment of the lower extremities during growth are a common reason for consultation of a paediatrician or orthopaedist. There is often uncertainty about the pathological value of these abnormalities and the need for treatment, even among specialists. In the course of physiological growth and development processes, the axial and torsional alignment of the legs sometimes change considerably and in characteristic patterns. DIAGNOSTICS: The ability to assess whether abnormal angular or torsional alignments of the lower limb in the course of growth shou

Infection of a prosthetic knee joint with Clostridium bifermentans.

We present the first reported case of prosthetic joint infection caused by Clostridium bifermentans, which was treated with total joint washout and debridement allowing for the patient to retain his prosthesis and achieve full recovery. Clostridium bifermentans is a gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium. This organism was once considered to be non-pathogenic, but has recently been associated with cases of septic arthritis, empyema, osteomyelitis, soft tissue infection, brain abscess, bacteremia and endocarditis.

[Radiosynoviorthesis of the knee joint: Influence on Baker's cysts].

AIM: The study examines the influence of a radiosynoviorthesis of the knee joint on the Baker's cyst volume over time. METHODS: Patients with radiosynoviorthesis of the knee joint with simultaneous Baker's cyst were retrospectively selected and asked for a sonographic control. The presence of a pre-therapeutic sonography with imaging of the Baker's cyst in longitudinal and cross-sectional view to determine the volume was necessary. Exclusion criterion was an intermediate therapy with influence on the volume of the Baker's cyst. Groups were formed with a time interval of 3 months (2 to 4 month

Prevention of Periprosthetic Joint Infections of the Hip and Knee.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a rare but devastating complication of arthroplasty. Research has been dedicated to minimizing the incidence of PJI, leading to the development of a comprehensive perioperative approach. Multiple preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative factors can increase patient risk. From medical management and skin sterilization to wound sterility and blood management, multiple issues must be considered in a well-rounded prevention protocol. In this literature review, we consolidate the current information that orthopedic surgeons can use to minimize PJI afte

The role of adipocytokines in the pathogenesis of knee joint osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common causes of musculoskeletal disability in the world. Traditionally, it has been thought that obesity contributes to the development and progression of OA by increased mechanical load of the joint structures. Nevertheless, studies have shown that adipose tissue-derived cytokines (adipocytokines) are a possible link between obesity and OA. Furthermore, according to recent findings, not only articular cartilage may be the main target of these cytokines but also the synovial membrane, subchondral bone and infrapatellar fat pad may be encompassed in the p

[Disability due to traumas and diseases of a knee joint].

The invalidism structure was analyzed for patients, suffering consequences of traumas and diseases of a knee joint (KJ). The primary invalidism level because of traumas and diseases of a KJ have constituted in 2013 yr 12.4%. The cause of invalidism in men is predominantly a one-side gonarthrosis, and in women--a bilateral one--due to concurrent aggravating causes (dishormonal changes, excessive body mass). The invalidism indices enhancement is caused by absence of a dispensary follow-up, insufficient treatment on various stages of the disease course, severity and irreversibility of pathologica

Designs and performance of microprocessor-controlled knee joints.

In this comparative study, three transfemoral amputee subjects were fitted with four different microprocessor-controlled exoprosthetic knee joints (MPK): C-Leg, Orion, Plié2.0, and Rel-K. In a motion analysis laboratory, objective gait measures were acquired during level walking at different velocities. Subsequent technical analyses, which involved X-ray computed tomography, identified the functional mechanisms of each device and enabled corroboration of the performance in the gait laboratory by the engineering design of the MPK. Gait measures showed that the mean increase of the maximum knee

Role of viscosupplementation in osteo-arthritis of knee joint.

Osteo-arthritis is the chronic degenerative disease associated with joint pain and loss of joint function. It is caused by 'wear and tear' on a joint. Knee is the most commonly Involved joint. Disease is so crippling that patient is unable to walk independently from bed to bathroom. The major causes of osteo-arthritis are age, gender, obesity, medical condition and hereditary. The signs and symptoms of osteo-arthritis are pain, joint stiffness, joint swelling, and loss of function. No blood tests are helpful in diagnosing osteo-arthritis. Management of osteo-arthritis includes non-pharmacologi

Periarticular osteotomies for degenerative joint disease of the knee.

Periarticular osteotomies, either a high tibial osteotomy for a varus deformity or a distal femoral osteotomy for a valgus deformity, are performed for symptomatic unicompartmental degenerative joint disease (DJD) of the knee. These procedures provide pain relief by realigning the mechanical axis and unloading the degenerative compartment. Although arthroplasty has become a reliable procedure for DJD, premature wear and revision remain a concern for younger individuals as well as for individuals who desire to participate in high impact activities. Long-term follow-up studies have shown good re

Abduction dislocation of the knee joint--a case study.

The paper presents a case of untypical, not included in existing classifications, knee joint dislocation in a young man. An MRI scan confirmed a rupture of both cruciate ligaments and damage to the ligamento-capsular complex on the medial side of the knee joint. Two weeks after injury, an arthroscopy was performed with joint lavage followed by repair of the damaged ligamento-capsular complex. A very good functional result was obtained three years after the injury, in spite of the patient not having consented to an elective cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Iron deposits in the knee joints of a thalassemic patient.

The overall prognosis for patients with β-thalassemia has improved considerably during the past decades mainly due to regular blood transfusions, improvements in chelation therapy, and enhanced surveillance with imaging studies examining iron overload and other clinical complications. However, the prolonged survival of these patients leads to the development of other health problems including degenerative diseases such as arthropathies, which require further attention since they have a significant impact on the quality of life. In the current case report, we present a 45-year-old white man wit
