Fatty acid ethyl esters in meconium and language development at 10 and 12 years.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is a major public health concern, yet no reliable clinical tools are available for assessing levels of drinking during pregnancy. Fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs), the non-oxidative metabolites of ethanol in meconium, are potential biomarkers for quantifying PAE. METHODS: In a prospective birth cohort of children exposed to alcohol and drugs in utero, meconium from 216 newborns was analyzed. FAEE concentrations were quantified with gas chromatography via a flame ionization detector. A factor score was derived via a principal component analysis of six

Universal Design for Learning With Preschoolers Who Are Deafblind: Promoting Communication and Language Development.

PURPOSE: Preschoolers who are deafblind are a low-incidence and heterogeneous group. Consequently, many speech-language pathologists (SLPs) may not have encountered these children. However, SLPs are essential members of the educational team serving a child who is deafblind. Collaboration is necessary to address the child's unique strengths, type and degree of visual impairment and hearing loss, accompanying disabilities, and learning needs. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) provides a flexible approach to enhance collaboration that promotes the child's access to and development of social int

Effects of Music Perception on Language Development in Children With Cochlear Implants: A Systematic Review.

Children with cochlear implants (CIs) have difficulties developing overall language skills due to a lack of neurological adjustment for multimodality inputs. Fortunately, music perception might play a role in strengthening the connection between auditory and motor perception, as language and music have shared neural mechanisms in the left hemisphere of the brain. This review synthesized the recently peer-reviewed studies on the role of music perception in language development for children with CIs by containing the search on pertinent keywords in eight databases following systematic inclusion

Predictors of language regression and its association with subsequent communication development in children with autism.

BACKGROUND: Language regression, broadly defined as the loss of acquired language skills in early childhood, is a distinctive feature of autism. Little is known about the factors underlying regression or the prognosis of children who exhibit regression. We examine potential predictors of language regression and test its association with language development in a prospective longitudinal sample of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from diagnosis to age 10 years. METHODS: We analysed data from Pathways in ASD, a prospective longitudinal study of 421 children enrolled around the time

Is There Any Association Between Language Acquisition and Cognitive Development in Cochlear-Implanted Children?

OBJECTIVE: Different studies on normal children and children with a sensory or intellectual disability indicate a strong correlation between the child's vocabulary domain and his cognitive abilities. Based on this, the main focus of the present study was to investigate the cognitive performance of cochlear-implanted children after a cognition-based language intervention program. METHODS: In this experimental study, 60 cochlear-implanted children were selected and randomly allocated into case and control groups. The control group received auditory verbal therapy (AVT), while the intervention g

Lexical Repetition Properties of Caregiver Speech and Language Development in Children With Cochlear Implants.

Purpose Early language input plays an important role in child language and cognitive development (e.g., Gilkerson et al., 2018; Hart & Risley, 1995). In this study, we examined the effects of child's hearing status on lexical repetition properties of speech produced by their caregivers with normal hearing (NH). In addition, we investigated the relationship between maternal lexical repetition properties and later language skills in English-learning infants with cochlear implants (CIs). Method In a free-play session, 17 mothers and their prelingually deaf infants who received CIs before 2 years

The speech-language pathologist's role in supporting the development of self-regulation: A review and tutorial.

PURPOSE: Children's engagement in self-regulation is a strong and positive predictor of their social and academic success, making self-regulation an important focus for caregivers and clinicians. The aims of this article are to provide a framework for understanding self-regulation and to identify strategies speech-language pathologists can use to integrate self-regulation work into their clinical practice. METHOD: Empirically supported considerations describing the developmental progression from co-regulation to self-regulation are outlined, and the effects of stress on self-regulation are di

Development and feasibility of Mandarin-language bone health scales for adolescents with cancer in Taiwan.

Cancer during adolescence increases the risk for bone mass deficiency later in life. Adolescents with cancer must learn to improve their bone health to avoid osteoporosis. In the present cross-sectional study, we developed and tested scales to assess the bone health self-efficacy and beliefs of adolescents with cancer in Taiwan. Test development followed three stages: item generation and scale formatting, examination of content validity, and validation of psychometric properties with a sample of 100 adolescents with cancer. Through the validation process, this research generated the seven-item

Early language development of children at familial risk of dyslexia: speech perception and production.

UNLABELLED: Speech perception and speech production were examined in 3-year-old Dutch children at familial risk of developing dyslexia. Their performance in speech sound categorisation and their production of words was compared to that of age-matched children with specific language impairment (SLI) and typically developing controls. We found that speech perception and production performance of children with SLI and children at familial risk of dyslexia was poorer than that of controls. The results of the at-risk and SLI-group were highly similar. Analysis of the individual data revealed that b

An investigation of language and phonological development and the responsiveness of preschool age children to the Lidcombe Program.

UNLABELLED: Knowledge of variables that predict treatment time is of benefit in deciding when to start treatment for early stuttering. To date, the only variable clearly related to treatment time with the Lidcombe Program is pre-treatment stuttering frequency. Previous studies have shown that children whose stuttering is more severe take longer to complete Stage 1 of the program. However, studies to date have not investigated phonology and language as predictors of treatment time. In the context of a Phase II clinical trial, the present prospective study showed that phonological development do

Development of forms and functions of negation in the early stages of language acquisition: a study in Tamil.

The development of forms and functions of negation in parent-child interactions in the early stages of language acquisition is discussed with illustrative examples from field data relating to two Tamil-speaking children and their parents. An attempt is made to provide a scheme for analysing the negatives in children's speech, maintaining the three basic functions of Bloom (1970) unaltered. Subcategories of these functions are introduced, taking into consideration the interactional situations as they are perceived by the parents and children. Children, it is observed, acquire the forms and func

Performance of American Indian children with fetal alcohol syndrome on the test of language development.

Alcohol is a teratogen known to have deleterious effects on the developing embryo and fetus. Language deficits secondary to central nervous system dysfunction are among the sequelae of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). Limited information is available regarding the language deficits associated with FAS, particularly among the population of American Indians in whom FAS is highly prevalent. The TOLD-P and TOLD-I were administered to 27 American Indian children: 10 with FAS and 17 normally developing control subjects. Pure-tone screening, immittance measurement, and vision screening preceded language

Speech acoustic-cue discrimination abilities of normally developing and language-impaired children.

The ability of 35 language impaired (LI) and 38 normally developing children between the ages of 5 and 8 1/2 yr to discriminate between speech stimuli, using an operantly conditioned, nonverbal motor response, was investigated. Six syllable contrasts ([ba] versus [da], [da] versus [ta], [epsilon] versus [ae], [dab] versus [daeb], [sa] versus [sta] and [sa] versus [integral a]) were selected to investigate discrimination of various temporal and spectral cues. Results demonstrated that the LI group made most errors discriminating syllables which were differentiated by consonants and fewest error

Forecasting Spoken Language Development in Children With Cochlear Implants Using Preimplant Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

IMPORTANCE: Cochlear implants substantially improve spoken language in children with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss, yet outcomes remain more variable than in children with healthy hearing. This variability cannot be reliably predicted for individual children using age at implant or residual hearing. Development of an artificial intelligence clinical tool to predict which patients will exhibit poorer improvements in language skills may enable an individualized approach to improve language outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To compare the accuracy of traditional machine learning (ML) with dee
