Specificity of phonological representations in school-age high-functioning ASD children.

PURPOSE: Well-specified phonological representations are important for the development of spoken and written language. This study investigates the types of speech errors and the quality of phonological representations in Greek-speaking school-age children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (HF-ASD), as well as the relationship between stored phonological representations and speech output in this sample, according to Stackhouse and Wells' (1997) model. METHOD: All participants completed a phonological and a naming test, and a non-word repetition task. A receptive phonological task

Acquisition of Mandarin long passives by children with developmental language disorder.

This study investigated the comprehension and production of long passives (i.e. bei-constructions with an overt agent) in Mandarin-speaking children with developmental language disorder (DLD). Seventeen preschool children with DLD (1 female; mean age: 61 months old) and 23 typically developing (TD) children (6 females; mean age: 62 months old) participated in a sentence-picture matching task (for comprehension) and an elicited production task. Their nonverbal working memory (NVWM) was measured with the fourth edition of the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence. Results showed t

Psychometric Properties of the English-Spanish Vocabulary Inventory in Toddlers With and Without Early Language Delay.

PURPOSE: Despite the increasing population of dual language learners (DLLs) in the United States, vocabulary measures for young DLLs have largely relied on instruments developed for monolinguals. The multistudy project reports on the psychometric properties of the English-Spanish Vocabulary Inventory (ESVI), which was designed to capture unique cross-language measures of lexical knowledge that are critical for assessing DLLs' vocabulary, including translation equivalents (whether the child knows the words for the same concept in each language), total vocabulary (the number of words known acros

The processing of rhythmic structures in music and prosody by children with developmental dyslexia and developmental language disorder.

Rhythm perception seems to be crucial to language development. Many studies have shown that children with developmental dyslexia and developmental language disorder have difficulties in processing rhythmic structures. In this study, we investigated the relationships between prosody and musical processing in Italian children with typical and atypical development. The tasks aimed to reproduce linguistic prosodic structures through musical sequences, offering a direct comparison between the two domains without violating the specificities of each one. About 16 Typically Developing children, 16 chi

Does the cerebellar sequential theory explain spoken language impairments? A literature review.

During the past decades, converging evidence from clinical, neuroimaging and neuroanatomical studies has demonstrated the key role of the cerebellum in the processing of non-motor aspects of language. Although more is known about the way in which the cerebellum participates in the mechanisms involved in written language, there is ambiguous information on its role in other aspects of language, such as in non-motor aspects of spoken language. Thus, to contribute additional insight into this important issue, in the present work, we review several original scientific papers focusing on the most fr

Examining Early Vocabulary Growth Trajectories in Late Talkers in a Low-Income Longitudinal Sample.

Studies show children in low-income households have heightened risk of developing as late talkers (LTs). Scholars have attributed the cause of these differences to variability in child-directed and observed language input, parenting quality, attendance at childcare facilities, or some combination therein, as briefly reviewed. However, this study focuses on a sample entirely of families experiencing low income to explore differences within this group. This study explores growth trajectories for child vocabulary production from age 8-30 months in a racially-diverse low-income longitudinal sample

Persistent Neurobehavioral Markers of Developmental Morphosyntax Errors in Adults.

Purpose Child language acquisition is marked by an optional infinitive period (ages 2-4 years) during which children use nonfinite (infinitival) verb forms and finite verb forms interchangeably in grammatical contexts that require finite forms. In English, children's errors include omissions of past tense /-ed/ and 3rd-person singular /-s/. This language acquisition period typically ends by the age of 4 years, but it persists in children with language impairments. It is unknown if adults still process optional infinitives differently than other kinds of morphosyntax errors. Method We compared

The Effects of Phonological Short Term Memory on Lexical and Grammatical Production Skills in Persian Children with Developmental Language Disorder.

The deficit in verbal working memory (vWM) skills has been frequently reported in children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and may contribute to their problems in language. This study aimed to compare the phonological short-term memory (pSTM) and linguistic skills between Persian-speaking children with DLD and typical language development (TLD) to explore the role that pSTM plays in lexical and grammatical problems of children with DLD. This study included 32 Persian-speaking children who were divided into two groups of DLD (n = 16) and TLD (n = 16) within the age range from 6 to 8

Early language development and severe visual impairment.

Some blind children show an early facility with expressive language in advance of their true level of comprehension; children who have severely impaired vision, but use visually-directed reaching, do not. Inspection of developmental assessments of 40 blind and very severely visually impaired children with no other disability, seen at the Wolfson Centre, London, confirmed these patterns. However, a considerable number of blind children showed a lag in expressive speech relative to comprehension, which might mean first words appearing as late as 2 years of age. Later assessments of this group of

Language disorder in a child with early left thalamic lesion.

In this paper we present the case of a child with early left thalamic vascular damage who subsequently developed a language disorder. At 3 years and 8 months, her language was poor and unintelligible and showed phonetic, phonological and morpho-syntactic disorders. She did not exhibit any signs of mental retardation. After specific speech therapy, she improved in all linguistic skills. Given the lack of reports on thalamic lesions in children, this paper describes the effect of a thalamic injury in the earliest phases of language acquisition in a child who showed consistent phonological disord

Acquisition Sequence of Grammatical Structures in Azerbaijani-Turkish-speaking Children Aged 4-6 Years: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Grammatical development in children follows a relatively predictable sequence across languages; however, most evidence comes from Indo-European languages, particularly English. Azerbaijani-Turkish, an agglutinative Turkic language, remains understudied in terms of the order in which grammatical structures are acquired. Understanding typical acquisition sequences is essential for identifying children with developmental language disorder (DLD) in linguistically diverse populations. AIMS: This study aimed to describe the receptive comprehension sequence of 28 grammatical structures i

[Psychiatric manifestations in children with speech disorders with and without minimal brain dysfunction].

Several studies have shown not only that children with psychiatric problems are having more speech and language disorders than control groups. Moreover it has been shown that other developmental disorders are more common in groups with speech and language disorders. In a study in Munich including all children with diagnosis of specific developmental disorders of speech and language seen in our outpatient department from 1981 to 1986 we found significantly more psychiatric diagnoses in a subgroup of children with MBD. This was proved for the boys only however not for the smaller group of girls.

Are Second Person Masculine Generics Easier to Process for Men than for Women? Evidence from Polish.

In Polish, it is obligatory to mark feminine or masculine grammatical gender on second-person singular past tense verbs (e.g., Dostałaś list 'You received-F a letter'). When the addressee's gender is unknown or unspecified, masculine but never feminine gender marking may be used. The present self-paced reading experiment aims to determine whether this practice creates a processing disadvantage for female addressees in such contexts. We further investigated how men process being addressed with feminine-marked verbs, which constitutes a pragmatic violation. To this end, we presented Polish nativ

Explicit Grammatical Intervention for Developmental Language Disorder: Three Approaches.

Purpose This article summarizes the shared principles and evidence underpinning methods employed in the three sentence-level (syntactic) grammatical intervention approaches developed by the authors. We discuss associated clinical resources and map a way forward for clinically useful research in this area. Method We provide an overview of the principles and perspectives that are common across our three syntactic intervention approaches: MetaTaal (Zwitserlood, 2015; Zwitserlood, Wijnen, et al., 2015), the SHAPE CODING system (Ebbels, 2007; Ebbels et al., 2014, 2007), and Complex Sentence Interve

Predictors of Treatment Response for Preschool Children With Developmental Language Disorder.

Purpose Enhanced Conversational Recast treatment is an effective intervention for remediating expressive grammatical deficits in preschool-age children with developmental language disorder, but not all children respond equally well. In this study, we sought to identify which child-level variables predict response to treatment of morphological deficits. Method Predictor variables of interest, including pre-intervention test scores and target morpheme production, age, and mother's level of education (proxy for socio-economic status) were included in analyses. The sample included 105 children (M

A descriptive study of lexical organisation in bilingual children with language impairment: Developmental changes.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to describe the development of Arabic and Swedish lexical organisation in bilingual children with language impairment (BLI). METHOD: Lexical organisation was assessed through word associations in 10 BLI and 10 bilingual children with typical development (BTD), aged 6;2-8;0 years, matched for age and gender. The participants were assessed twice, with a 1-year interval. Word associations were coded as paradigmatic, syntagmatic, phonological, other and no answer. This study reports analyses of the semantically-related syntagmatic and paradigmatic associations. Using rep
