[Late sequelae of recurrent occupational lead poisoning--the status of the nervous system].

In 44 men with a history of repeated occupational lead poisoning multidisciplinary clinical and laboratory investigations were carried out. The number of lead poisoning episodes was from 2 to 7. Apart from peripheral hypalgesia on the extremities (in 6 cases) no other neurological abnormalities were found. The motor nerve conduction velocity in the median, ulnar, radial, peroneal and tibial nerves was slightly slower in 27 cases and considerably slower in one case. Slowed down conduction velocity was most often observed in 2 nerves (12 cases) and in one nerve (9 cases), less frequently in thre

Lead poisoning without encephalopathy. Effect of early diagnosis on neurologic and psychologic salvage.

Medical and psychological status of 166 patients previously treated for lead poisoning and of 22 sibling controls were evaluated. Maximum blood lead levels ranged from 40 to 471 microgram/dL. Eighteen patients had definite symptoms, 32 had questionable symptoms, and 116 were asymptomatic. No patients developed seizures, other neurological sequelae, or abnormal nerve conduction velocity. No statistically significant relationship was found between blood lead concentration (PbB) and subsequent intellectual function. The mean IQ of the patient cohort was 87, approximately at the 50th percentile fo

γ-Benzene hexachloride poisoning leading to acute hepatorenal decompensation.

γ-Benzene hexachloride is a commonly used insecticide of organochlorine group. Notable toxic effects include seizures, ataxia, confusion and other central nervous system dysfunction. A 30-year-old male farmer with suicidal ingestion of γ-benzene hexachloride poison developed acute intrinsic renal failure with azotaemia and diminished urine output along with features of acute fulminate liver failure. Renal function recovered with haemodialysis and liver parameters gradually normalised with time. As per our knowledge simultaneous acute hepatic and kidney injury associated with γ-benzene hexachlo

VIGILANCE POISON: Illegal poisoning and lead intoxication are the main factors affecting avian scavenger survival in the Pyrenees (France).

A specific surveillance program has been set up to monitor avian scavenger populations in the French Pyrenean Mountains, hosting a high proportion of the French populations. The two main purposes of the study were to identify all causes of death and to investigate poisoning cases. All 170 birds found dead during the 7-year program were submitted to full necropsy, X-Ray, parasitological investigations and consistent analytical toxicology screenings (Cholinesterase inhibitors, anticoagulant rodenticides, organochlorine insecticides, Pb, Cd). Over the study period, 8 Bearded Vultures, 120 Griffon

Comparative efficacy of silibinin and nano-silibinin on lead poisoning in Male Wistar rats.

Lead (Pb) is an environmental neurotoxin that can lead to toxicity. It has shown that tissues can be exposed to oxidative stress in lead poisoning. Since silymarin is a natural agent with antioxidant effects, this study aimed to investigate the antioxidant and chelation effects of silibinin and nano-silibinin on the oxidative stress status in lead-poisoned rats. Sixty male Wistar rats randomly divided into ten groups (n = 6). Control and Pb groups treated with or without silibinin and nano-silibinin for six days. Following measuring of weight and blood lead levels, biochemical antioxidant para

Bilateral Wrist Drop Due to Lead Poisoning in a Young Woman With Opium Addiction.

Opium addiction can cause symptoms in the central or peripheral neurological systems, as well as gastrointestinal disorders and anemia; in such situations, lead poisoning should be considered and chelation therapy should be started as soon as possible. In adults, lead poisoning is an unusual cause of abdominal pain. A common form of lead neuropathy includes weakness of the wrist and finger extensors. We describe a 24-year-old female who developed severe lead poisoning after 3 years of opium consumption, leading to gastrointestinal complaints and bilateral wrist drops.

Encephalopathy from lead poisoning masquerading as a flu-like syndrome in an autistic child.

Acute encephalopathy from childhood lead poisoning is fortunately rare. However, in pediatric patients with developmental disabilities and pica, there is a risk of lead exposure at a dose commensurate with encephalopathy, coupled with a risk of delayed diagnosis because of difficulty in distinguishing between baseline and altered behavior. We report here a 4-year old autistic boy who presented to the pediatrician's office with gastrointestinal symptoms and behavioral changes and was at first thought to have a viral syndrome. He returned 2 days later with a worsening illness; increasing pallor,

Severe lead poisoning and an abdominal foreign body in a mute swan (Cygnus olor).

The mute swan (Cygnus olor) is common on British waterways and frequently presents to wildlife hospitals with fishing tackle-related problems. Many of these birds have abnormally high blood lead levels after the ingestion of lead fishing weights. The ingestion of fishing line and tackle is also commonly seen. This case report describes the treatment of a swan with a particularly severe case of lead poisoning and the subsequent removal of an abdominal foreign body.

A comparison of two dosing regimens of succimer in children with chronic lead poisoning.

There is limited information defining the optimal dosing regimen of succimer in the treatment of children with chronic lead poisoning. It is typically administered as a five day course of high dose therapy (1,050 mg/m2/day) followed by 14 days of low dose therapy (700 mg/m2/day). This study compared the effect on blood lead concentrations (BPb) of treatment with this standard regimen and an alternate regimen consisting of two courses of high dose therapy separated by one week. There were significant reductions in the mean BPb in both the standard (n = 7) and alternate (n = 4) treatment groups

Biochemical indicators of metabolic poisoning associated with lead based occupations in nutritionally disadvantaged communities.

The biochemical alterations that occur in chronic lead exposure were studied in 86 males who were occupationally exposed to the metal. The biochemical indices investigated were blood lead, total and ionized calcium, inorganic phosphate, total protein and albumin, uric acid and 1,25 dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,25] (OH2 D3]. Serum total and ionized calcium levels and 1,25 [OH2] D3 were significantly lower in lead workers than in the control population (P < 0.01 and P < 0.001, respectively). Multiple regression analysis showed an important relationship between blood lead and serum calcium. Uric a

Free erythrocyte protoporphyrin (FEP) and zinc protoporphyrin (ZnP) as biological parameters for lead poisoning.

Lamola et al. (1974) reported that free erythrocyte protoporphyrin (FEP) is not present as free type protoporphyrin ( FPP ) but rather is chelated with zinc in lead poisoning and iron deficiency anemia. In our fluorometric study of FEP and zinc protoporphyrin ( ZnP ) in erythrocytes of lead-poisoned rabbits and lead workers, the co-existence of ZnP and FPP was observed in the severe stage of acute lead poisoning in rabbits. The ratio of ZnP to FEP in erythrocytes decreased with the progress of lead intoxication, and the amount of FPP was greater than that of ZnP in the severe stage of intoxica

Treatment of manganese and lead poisoning with sodium para-aminosalicylic acid: A contemporary update.

Sodium para-aminosalicylic acid (PAS-Na) treatment for manganese (Mn) intoxication has shown efficacy in experimental and clinical studies, giving rise to additional studies on its efficacy for lead (Pb) neurotoxicity and its associated mechanisms of neuroprotection. The difference between PAS-Na and other metal complexing agents, such as edetate calcium sodium (CaNa2-EDTA), is firstly that PAS-Na can readily pass through the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and complex and facilitate the excretion of manganese and lead. Secondly, PAS-Na has anti-inflammatory effects. Recent studies have broadened t
