Hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy diagnosed by FDG PET-CT in a patient with lung adenocarcinoma.

A 52-year-old man had a positron emission tomography computed tomography (PET-CT) scan for staging of a biopsy proven lung adenocarcinoma. An additional acquisition of the lower extremities was performed as the patient complained of bilateral leg pain. The PET-CT scan showed a 6.5 x 5.0 cm left upper lobe lung mass invading the mediastinum with maximal standardized uptake value of 10.7, compatible with primary lung cancer. The CT portion of the PET-CT of the legs showed extensive irregular bilateral periosteal new bone formation in the long bones. The PET images showed diffuse moderately incre

[Contralateral replantation after bilateral traumatic lower leg amputation. Case report with 6 year follow-up].

A 66-year-old patient attempted suicide by jumping in front of a train. The lower extremities were amputated at different levels. On the right side, there was a complete amputation within the distal third of the lower leg. Proximal to the amputation site, there was an extensive soft-tissue and bone defect. On the left side, there was a crush injury of the tarsal and mid-tarsal bones. The left lower leg showed only few injuries. An ipsilateral (anatomical) replantation was not possible. In order to save one lower extremity, we decided to carry out a cross-over (contralateral) replantation of th

Stature estimation formulae from radiographically determined limb bone length in a modern Japanese population.

The objective of this study was to derive regression formulae for stature estimation from long limb bones in a Japanese population. Moreover, commonly employed estimation equations, such as that of Fujii, were re-evaluated through application of current data. To construct equations, measurements were conducted on 434 living subjects (342 females and 92 males; 18-59years old). The whole or maximum length of the femur, tibia, and humerus was determined radiographically using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, which permitted measurement of long bones with no magnification. Regression formulae wer

Differentiation of bones and skeletal muscles in chick embryos cultured on albumen.

Chick embryos were cultured in hemispheric dishes containing 25 ml fresh albumen. The addition of albumen, known to the relatively poor in free calcium, increased the deficit of calcium regularly observed in embryos cultured with other methods. In spite of this, the embryos survived and differentiated adequately for prolonged periods of time. Most of the cultured embryos presented malformations of the long bones of the limbs consisting of bowing and exuberant growth of bone trabeculae in the concavity of the bend. Block staining with alizarin showed that bones were undermineralized at the time

Complete unilateral leg duplication with ipsilateral renal agenesis.

UNLABELLED: A case of a 5-month-old infant with complete duplication of the right leg and ipsilateral renal agenesis is presented. There was also a duplicated scrotum, posterior urethral valves with hydronephrosis, abnormal pelvic bones, and a ventricular septal defect. Complete caudal duplication is exceedingly rare. Associated defects are common. Several aetiological theories have been proposed. Among them, an underlying polytopic (acro-renal) developmental field defect has been suggested. It best explains the specific findings in our patient. However, the aetiology of caudal duplication syn

Observations on leg deformity in broilers with particular reference to the intertarsal joint.

Leg deformities were investigated in two flocks of male broilers. The most frequently encountered lesions were a progressive valgus deformity of the intertarsal joint, dyschondroplasia and an abnormal thickening of growth plates. No chondrodystrophy was observed. In one flock the peak incidence of leg deformities occurred between 3 and 7 weeks of age and 75% of all valgus abnormalities were diagnosed between 22 and 35 days of age (P < 0.001); 62% of broilers with leg abnormality in this flock had growth plate lesions in one or more bones compared to 40% in broilers without deformity (P < 0.001

Influence of Amphibian Metamorphosis on the Biokinetics and Biodistribution of Radionuclides Cesium and Strontium.

Amphibians currently face a global decline due to numerous stressors, including contaminated ecosystems. Radionuclides, while less prevalent than other anthropogenic contaminants, can pose a threat to aquatic environments due to their long physical half-lives and tendency to accumulate in organisms. This study investigated the accumulation, depuration, and biodistribution of 134Cs and 85Sr in amphibians through metamorphosis. Limnodynastes peronii tadpoles were exposed to dissolved 134Cs and 85Sr for 6 days and then depurated in clean water for up to 12 days. Whole-body Cs and Sr burdens were

Bizarre presentation of epigastric heteropagus: report of a case.

We report an unusual case of epigastric heteropagus in a female neonate. The parasite had a single lung as well as a liver, stomach, intestine, pancreas, ovaries, a single kidney, and a bladder. These visceral organs were located in the abdominal and pelvic space of the autosite, and the pelvic bone and lower legs of the parasite were fused with the respective organs in the autosite. The infant underwent operations to remove the central leg and some of the intra-abdominal organs of the parasite, but she must still undergo further surgery to remove the genitourinary organs and pelvic bones of t

Rehabilitation Following Above-Knee Amputation in a Pediatric Osteosarcoma Patient: A Case Report.

The earliest stages of osteosarcomas are primitive mesenchymal cells. It generally occurs close to the long bones' metaphysis and typically affects the long bones, such as the arm and leg. This case report underscores the pivotal role of physiotherapy in the rehabilitation of a 14-year-old male diagnosed with osteosarcoma, who underwent above-knee amputation. The structured six-week rehabilitation program, encompassing passive, active-assisted, and active exercises for the affected limb, alongside strength training for unaffected joints, produced notable gains in the pain rating scale and the

Bone density, microarchitecture and strength in elite figure skaters is discipline dependent.

OBJECTIVES: In elite figure skaters, to determine if there was a difference in volumetric bone mineral density and bone strength between 1) figure skaters and population-based normative data, 2) single or pair skaters and ice dancers, and 3) the landing and takeoff legs. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. METHODS: Figure skaters had their non-dominant distal radius and bilateral tibia scanned using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography. Volumetric bone mineral density was determined at the total, cortical and trabecular compartments, and finite element analysis estimated bone str

Chondrosarcoma of the chest wall with Ollier's disease.

A 15 x 15 cm mass in the right hemithorax of a 25-year-old woman was incidentally detected at routine chest radiography. Radical excision of the bony chest wall, including right CII-VI, revealed chondrosarcoma. Large, expansile parosteal chondromas were radiographically visualized in the pelvis and bones of the lower leg, representing Ollier's disease. Chondrosarcoma of the chest wall appears to be rare in Ollier's disease.

Bone fractures in a 53-year-old patient with parathyroid adenoma--a case report.

The study reports a case of primary hyperparathyroidism in a middle-aged patient who was first admitted for persistent ankle pain and local swelling. The subsequent clinical procedures suggested cystic changes in several leg bones, which were later shown to be caused by the parathyroid adenoma. Clinical presentation of the primary hyperparathyroidism can be highly misleading, sometimes causing various clinical procedures before it is certainly diagnosed.

Changing epidemiology of lower extremity fractures in adults over a 15-year period - a National Hospital Discharge Registry study.

BACKGROUND: Demographic changes led to an increasingly ageing population in Germany and thus to possible changes in the frequency of fractures. The primary aim of this study was to report changes in fracture rates of the lower extremities in Germany in 2002 compared to 2017 and to evaluate those changes. METHODS: Inpatient data from the German National Hospital Discharge Registry (ICD10) for 2002 and 2017 were evaluated. Changes in total counts and incidence rates were analysed for fractures in the following locations: femoral neck, pertrochanteric, subtrochanteric, distal femur, femoral shaf

[Fractures of the lower extremities in childhood : Part 2: lower leg and ankle fractures].

The treatment of pediatric patients in trauma surgery is a special situation in every aspect. For deciding on the correct treatment of fractures of the lower leg and ankle joint, various parameters, such as residual growth rate, skeletal age and height of the patient are decisive. The differences between fractures in children and adolescents are the open epiphyseal plate and the resulting residual growth. The bones of young children have a higher healing tendency and a greater potential for correction than in adolescents. Especially in the lower leg and the ankle joint, the potential for corre

Melorheostosis in an Adolescent with Limb Length Discrepancy and Management with Epiphysiodesis with Eight Plates.

INTRODUCTION: Melorheostosis is a rare bone dysplasia. It is mainly a radiographic diagnosis with distinct findings of endosteal or periosteal sclerosis along the axis of long bones, resembling the flowing wax. It is usually polyostotic and monomelic. Clinical manifestations are pain, limitation of joint movements, deformities, and contractures. Leg length discrepancy may be found, usually the affected limb being shorter. CASE PRESENTATION: We present an adolescent boy, with melorheostosis of the lower limb. The affected limb was longer with equally divided discrepancy of the femur and tibia.

Segmentation accuracy of long bones.

The use of three-dimensional imaging methodologies in new applications in the orthopaedic field has introduced a need for high accuracy, in addition to a correct diagnosis. The aim of this study was to quantify the absolute dimensional errors between models reconstructed from computed tomography and magnetic resonance images compared to a ground truth for various regions of the bone. Clinical CT and MRI scans were acquired from nine lower leg cadavers and the bones were subsequently cleaned from soft tissues. 3D models of the tibia were created from the segmented CT and MRI images and compared

Unveiling a Silent Bone Lesion: Pathological Fracture in a Child With Non-Ossifying Fibroma.

Non-ossifying fibroma (NOF) is a benign, self-limiting fibrous bone lesion commonly seen in children and adolescents, generally affecting the metaphysis of long bones. Although typically asymptomatic, larger NOF lesions can predispose patients to pathological fractures, especially in weight-bearing bones. An 11-year-old boy presented to the emergency room following a minor knee trauma that caused pain and an inability to bear weight on the affected leg. Imaging studies identified a large, well-defined lytic lesion in the distal femur, primarily suspected to be an aneurysmal or simple bone cyst

Adult-onset Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis with High Intensity of Muscles Detected by Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Successfully Controlled with Tocilizumab.

Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) is an autoinflammatory bone disorder that generally occurs in children and predominantly affects the long bones with marginal sclerosis. We herein report two cases of adult-onset CRMO involving the tibial diaphysis bilaterally, accompanied by polyarthritis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed both tibial osteomyelitis and high intensity of the extensive lower leg muscles. Anti-interleukin-6 therapy with tocilizumab (TCZ) effectively controlled symptoms and inflammatory markers in both patients. High intensity of the lower leg muscles detect
