An immune-suppressing protein in human endogenous retroviruses.

MOTIVATION: Retroviruses are important contributors to disease and evolution in vertebrates. Sometimes, retrovirus DNA is heritably inserted in a vertebrate genome: an endogenous retrovirus (ERV). Vertebrate genomes have many such virus-derived fragments, usually with mutations disabling their original functions. RESULTS: Some primate ERVs appear to encode an overlooked protein. This protein is homologous to protein MC132 from Molluscum contagiosum virus, which is a human poxvirus, not a retrovirus. MC132 suppresses the immune system by targeting NF- κ B, and it had no known homologs until no

Ventilation and oxygen consumption during acute hypoxia in newborn mammals: a comparative analysis.

We asked whether the lack of sustained hyperventilation during acute hypoxia, often reported to occur in the infant, is a common characteristic among newborn mammalian species, and to which extent inter-species differences may be accounted for by differences in metabolic responses. Ventilation (VE) and breathing pattern have been measured by flow-plethysmography or by the barometric method in normoxia and after 10 min of 10% O2 breathing in newborn mammals of 17 species over a 3 g to 20 kg range in body size. In 14 of these species oxygen consumption (VO2) has also been measured by a manometri

Similarities in Leptospira serogroup and species distribution in animals and humans in the Indian ocean island of Mayotte.

Our objective was to identify local animal reservoirs of leptospirosis to explain the unusual features of Leptospira strains recently described among patients on the island of Mayotte. By means of a microscopic agglutination test using local clinical isolates, we found that 11.2% of black rats were seropositive to Leptospira, whereas 10.2% of flying foxes, 2% of lemurs, 93.1% of domestic dogs, and 87.5% of stray dogs were seropositive. As observed in humans, Mini was the main serogroup circulating in animals, whereas serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae was absent. Using quantitative polymerase chain

LMTK2 Inhibits Metastasis of Colon Cancer Cells Through p38 MAPK.

Metastasis is the leading cause of death in patients with colon cancer. Although Lemur tyrosine kinase 2 (LMTK2) has been implicated in cell proliferation, its role in metastasis is unclear. In this study, we found that low LMTK2 expression correlates with metastatic status (M1 stage) and a higher metastasis rate in a large colon cancer cohort. Additionally, LMTK2 expression is negatively correlated with pro-metastatic genes and positively correlated with metastasis suppressors, a pattern that was validated in 50 clinical colon cancer specimens. Functional studies demonstrated that LMTK2 poten

An anthropoid/strepsirrhine divergence in ventral visual stream connectivity.

The ventral visual stream has undergone extensive reorganization within the primate lineage. While some work has examined restructuring of the ventral prefrontal cortical gray matter across primates, comparative studies of white matter connectivity are lacking primarily due to difficulties in data acquisition and processing. Here, we present a data-driven approach to the study of white matter connectivity using postmortem diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. With this approach, we reconstruct anterior temporal-frontal and occipitotemporal-frontal connections across 2 anthropoids an

Morphology of the nasal capsule of primates--with special reference to Daubentonia and Homo.

Primitive mammals are considered macrosmatic. They have very large and complicated nasal capsules, nasal cavities with extensive olfactory epithelia, and relatively large olfactory bulbs. The complicated structures of the nasal capsule follow a relatively conservative "bauplan," which is normally easy to see in earlier fetal stages; especially in altricial taxa it differentiates well into postnatal life. As anteriormost part of the chondrocranium, the nasal capsule is at first cartilaginous. Most of it ossifies endochondrally, but "appositional bone" ("Zuwachsknochen") is also common. Many fet

LMTK3 regulates breast cancer angiogenesis via a context-dependent mesenchymal-epithelial transition program.

Angiogenesis constitutes a critical rate-limiting determinant of tumor progression in breast cancer (BC). Resistance to conventional anti-angiogenic therapies in BC highlights an unmet need to identify upstream molecular regulators coordinating malignant cell plasticity and vascular remodeling. Lemur tail kinase 3 (LMTK3) is a well-established oncogenic kinase; however, its specific role within the tumor angiogenic microenvironment remains undefined. Here, we identify LMTK3 as a context-dependent driver of angiogenesis through a mesenchymal-epithelial transition (MET) program. By integrating s

Ancient positive selection on CD155 as a possible cause for susceptibility to poliovirus infection in simians.

Poliovirus is the etiological agent of poliomyelitis. From the observations that only simians are susceptible to poliovirus infection and that 37 amino acid sites (the poliovirus-binding associated [PBA] sites) in the domain D1 of CD155 are involved in the binding to poliovirus, it is considered that the susceptibility to poliovirus infection evolved through amino acid substitutions that occurred at the PBA sites on the ancestral branch of simians. Here it is shown that positive selection has operated on these substitutions by analyzing the nucleotide sequences encoding almost the entire regio

Highly Variable Streptococcus oralis Strains Are Common among Viridans Streptococci Isolated from Primates.

Viridans streptococci were obtained from primates (great apes, rhesus monkeys, and ring-tailed lemurs) held in captivity, as well as from free-living animals (chimpanzees and lemurs) for whom contact with humans is highly restricted. Isolates represented a variety of viridans streptococci, including unknown species. Streptococcus oralis was frequently isolated from samples from great apes. Genotypic methods revealed that most of the strains clustered on separate lineages outside the main cluster of human S. oralis strains. This suggests that S. oralis is part of the commensal flora in higher p

Comparing the Limbic-Frontal Connectome across the Primate Order: Conservation of Connections and Implications for Translational Neuroscience.

The interaction of the limbic system and frontal cortex of the primate brain is important in many affective behaviors. For this reason, it is heavily implicated in a number of psychiatric conditions. This system is often studied in the macaque monkey, the most largely used nonhuman primate model species. However, how evolutionary conserved this system is and how well results obtained in any model species translate to the human brain can only be understood by studying its organization across the primate order. Here, we present an investigation of the topology of limbic-frontal connections acros

Isolation of Campylobacter fetus subsp jejuni from zoo animals.

Over a 1-year period, 619 fecal specimens from animals at the Denver Zoo were cultured for Campylobacter fetus subsp jejuni. The organism was isolated from 35 animals, including 12 primates, 2 felids, a red panda, 13 hooved animals, 6 birds, and 1 reptile. Of 44 cultured fecal specimens from diarrheal animals, 31.8% were positive for Campylobacter, whereas only 5.6% of 575 specimens from animals without diarrhea were positive (P less than 0.001). Among 25 isolates tested, 12 serotypes were represented; several of these serotypes are commonly associated with Campylobacter enteritis in human bei

Judith Masters and Fabien Génin: An unwavering union in strepsirrhine evolution.

This preamble honors the late evolutionary primatologists Judith Masters and Fabien Génin, synthesizing their profound impact on strepsirrhine anatomy, systematics, and biogeography. Over four decades, Masters applied Hugh Paterson's Recognition Concept of species alongside comprehensive craniodental morphometrics and phylogenetics to reframe the evolutionary trees of nocturnal African galagos, culminating in the formal description of the dwarf galago genus Paragalago. Génin complemented this systematic framework by linking sensory ecology with comparative physiology, providing groundbreaking

Echinococcus multilocularis Infection, Southern Ontario, Canada.

Alveolar echinococcosis, the disease caused by infection with the intermediate stage of the Echinococcus multilocularis tapeworm, is typically fatal in humans and dogs when left untreated. Since 2012, alveolar echinococcosis has been diagnosed in 5 dogs, 3 lemurs, and 1 chipmunk in southern Ontario, Canada, a region previously considered free of these tapeworms. Because of human and animal health concerns, we estimated prevalence of infection in wild canids across southern Ontario. During 2015-2017, we collected fecal samples from 460 wild canids (416 coyotes, 44 foxes) during postmortem exami

The role of invasive trophoblast in implantation and placentation of primates.

We here review the evolution of invasive placentation in primates towards the deep penetration of the endometrium and its arteries in hominoids. The strepsirrhine primates (lemurs and lorises) have non-invasive, epitheliochorial placentation, although this is thought to be derived from a more invasive type. In haplorhine primates, there is differentiation of trophoblast at the blastocyst stage into syncytial and cellular trophoblast. Implantation involves syncytiotrophoblast that first removes the uterine epithelium then consolidates at the basal lamina before continuing into the stroma. In la

Surveillance and management of Echinococcus multilocularis in a wildlife park.

The fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis is the causative agent of alveolar echinococcosis, a severe zoonotic disease that may be fatal if untreated. A broad spectrum of mammalian species may be accidentally infected even in captivity. In April 2011, liver lesions due to E. multilocularis were observed during the necropsy of a captive-born nutria (Myocastor coypus) in a French wildlife park, leading to initiation of a study to survey the parasite's presence in the park. A comparable environmental contamination with fox's feces infected by E. multilocularis was reported inside (17.8%) and o

Evidence of MHC class I and II influencing viral and helminth infection via the microbiome in a non-human primate.

Until recently, the study of major histocompability complex (MHC) mediated immunity has focused on the direct link between MHC diversity and susceptibility to parasite infection. However, MHC genes can also influence host health indirectly through the sculpting of the bacterial community that in turn shape immune responses. We investigated the links between MHC class I and II gene diversity gut microbiome diversity and micro- (adenovirus, AdV) and macro- (helminth) parasite infection probabilities in a wild population of non-human primates, mouse lemurs of Madagascar. This setup encompasses a

Cochlear labyrinth volume in euarchontoglirans: implications for the evolution of hearing in primates.

Using high resolution X-ray computed tomography data we examined the relationship between cochlear labyrinth volume and body mass in extant, non-primate euarchontoglirans, and in two fossils, to allow for comparison with the results of Kirk and Gosselin-Ildari (2009). Modern primates have significantly higher cochlear labyrinth volumes relative to body mass than other euarchontoglirans, which may be related to a downward shift in the highest and lowest audible frequencies over the course of primate evolution, and to the relative increase in brain size observed in Euprimates.

Amyloid-β Pathology Is the Common Nominator Proteinopathy of the Primate Brain Aging.

Senile plaques, mainly diffuse, and cerebral amyloid-β (Aβ) angiopathy are prevalent in the aging brain of non-human primates, from lemurs to non-human Hominidae. Aβ but not hyper-phosphorylated tau (HPtau) pathology is the common nominator proteinopathy of non-human primate brain aging. The abundance of Aβ in the aging primate brain is well tolerated, and the impact on cognitive functions is usually limited to particular tasks. In contrast, human brain aging is characterized by the early appearance of HPtau pathology, mainly forming neurofibrillary tangles, dystrophic neurites of neuritic pla

Causes of mortality in anuran amphibians from an ex situ survival assurance colony in Panama.

The success of ex situ survival assurance populations as tools for amphibian conservation depends on the health and reproductive success of founder populations. Necropsy examination and histopathology of animals that die in assurance populations are useful for the identification of population-limiting disease problems and can help to direct applied research efforts in areas such as amphibian husbandry and nutrition. This study reviewed postmortem findings in 167 frogs from 13 species that died in a large Panamanian rescue and survival assurance population between 2006 and 2011. Common problems
