Adult stem cells, present in various parts of the human body, are undifferentiated cells that can proliferate and differentiate to replace dying cells within tissues. Stem cells have specifically been identified in the cornea, trabecular meshwork, crystalline lens, iris, ciliary body, retina, choroid, sclera, conjunctiva, eyelid, lacrimal gland, and orbital fat. The identification of ocular stem cells broadens the potential therapeutic strategies for untreatable eye diseases. Currently, stem cell transplantation for corneal and conjunctival diseases remains the most common stem cell-based ther

Contact lens-related complications are common, affecting around one third of wearers, although most are mild and easily managed. Contact lenses have well-defined anatomical and physiological effects on the ocular surface and can result in other consequences due to the presence of a biologically active material. A contact lens interacts with the tear film, ocular surface, skin, endogenous and environmental microorganisms, components of care solutions and other antigens which may result in disease specific to contact lens wear, such as metabolic or hypersensitivity disorders. Contact lens wear m

INTRODUCTION: Various Acanthamoeba species are free-living organisms widely distributed in the human environment. Amphizoic amoebae as facultative parasites may cause vision-threatening eye disease - Acanthamoeba keratitis, mostly among contact lens wearers. As the number of cases is increasing, and applied therapy often unsuccessful, proper hygienic measures and effective contact lenses disinfection are crucial for the prevention of this disease. Available contact lens solutions are not fully effective against amphizoic amoebae; there is a need to enhance their disinfecting activity to preven

The vitreous body, the largest intraocular component, plays a key role in eye development, refraction, cell barrier function, oxygen metabolism and the pathogenesis of assorted diseases. Age, refraction and systemic diseases can cause vitreous metabolic abnormalities. With the continuous development of vitrectomy techniques and equipment, vitreous injections and vitrectomies have increased over the recent decades. However, the normal oxygen tension gradient in the vitreous helps to protect the lens and anterior chamber angle from oxidative stress damage, whereas the increased vitreous oxygen t

BACKGROUND: The contaminated contact lens provides Pseudomonas aeruginosa an ideal site for attachment and biofilm production. Continuous contact of the eye to the biofilm-infested lens can lead to serious ocular diseases, such as keratitis (corneal ulcers). The biofilms also prevent effective penetration of the antibiotics, which increase the chances of antibiotic resistance.
METHODS: For this study, 22 Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates were obtained from 36 contact lenses and 14 contact lens protective fluid samples. These isolates were tested against eight commonly used antibiotics using Kir

Nowadays, keratitis, corneal infection due to wearing contact lens means an increasingly serious problem. Neglected cases may lead to corneal damage that can cause blindness in cases of otherwise healthy eyes. Early diagnosis based on the clinical picture and the typical patient history is an important way of prevention. Prophylaxis is substantial to avoid bacterial and viral infection that is highly essential in this group of diseases. Teaching contact lens wearers the proper contact lens care, storage, sterility, and hygiene regulations is of great importance. In case of corneal inflammation

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is widely used to treat various ocular diseases like dry eye syndrome, keratoconus, and other corneal epithelial injuries. The currently available eye drop solutions need frequent doses affecting the routine life style of patients. In this work, the silicone contact lens was designed to entrap HA and Pluronic®F127 to improve the wettability of the contact lens to treat various ocular diseases. The soaking method (HA-SM) was compared with the direct entrapment (DL-HA-PI) technique. The HA-Pluronic®F127-laden contact lenses (DL-HA-PI) showed acceptable optical transmittance

The ultrastructure of lens capsule abnormalities in Alport's syndrome is reported. An anterior lens capsule from a 29-year-old patient with lenticonus who was affected by Alport's syndrome was obtained at the time of surgery. The histopathologic findings showed the thickness of the anterior lens capsule was decreased and there were many vertical capsular dehiscences localized at the inner part of the lens capsule. Almost every dehiscence was limited to the inner two thirds of the capsule. One should be cautious in attempting intraocular lens implantation into the lens capsule of patients with

BACKGROUND: Congenital ectopia lentis is characterized by dislocation of the lens caused by partial or complete abnormalities in the zonular fibers. It can be caused by either systemic diseases or isolated ocular diseases. Gene detection techniques can provide valuable information when an etiological diagnosis is challenging. Herein, we report the case of a six-year-old girl with a confirmed diagnosis of isolated ectopia lentis caused by a compound heterozygous ADAMTSL4 gene mutation.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 6-year-old Chinese Han girl with strabismus in the right eye. Slit lamp

Altered levels of trace elements are associated with increased oxidative stress that is eventually responsible for pathologic conditions. Oxidative stress has been proposed to be involved in eye diseases, including cataract formation. We visualized the distribution of metals and other trace elements in the eye of zebrafish embryos by micro X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) imaging. Many elements showed highest accumulation in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) of the zebrafish embryo. Knockdown of the zebrafish brown locus homologues tyrp1a/b eliminated accumulation of these elements in the RPE, in

BACKGROUND: Both, Stickler and Marshall syndrome are dominantly inherited, connective tissue disorders with highly variable individual manifestations. Probably, both syndromes represent the same entity with occasional partially different clinical manifestations.
PATIENT: We are reporting on a female patient with typical ocular and systemic manifestations of both syndromes: high myopia, glaucoma and goniodysgenesis, submucosal cleft palate, sensorineural hearing loss, and "flat" mid-face. Additionally, we observed subluxation of the ocular lens in one eye which was previously described in only

Advanced Keratoconus and ectatic corneal diseases may lead to corneal thinning and irregular astigmatism. The optical distortion caused by these pathologies may result in poor visibility for the surgeon during phacoemulsification. Thus, the risk of complication would be increased intraoperatively (capsular rupture, vitreous loss). The aim of this case series was to use a modified customized Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) contact lens to improve visualization during all the stages of phacoemulsification in irregular corneas and to avoid open sky technique for cataract removal during penetrating kera

PURPOSE: To identify factors associated with rigid contact lens comfort in keratoconus.
METHODS: Baseline data from the 16 Collaborative Longitudinal Evaluation of Keratoconus (CLEK) Study clinical sites were analyzed for all patients wearing a rigid contact lens in their more severely keratoconic eye (as determined by steep keratometry). Corneal transplant patients, patients who did not wear a rigid contact lens in either eye, patients who did not wear a rigid lens in their worse eye, and patients with missing contact lens comfort data were excluded from the sample. A total of 751 eyes were

BACKGROUND: Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is disease of epidemic proportion associated with significant visual morbidity. Visual complications of AIDS have been described as a result of cytomegaloviral retinitis as well as fungal and protozoan opportunistic eye disease. Although cataracts have been established as a direct consequence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or AIDS, studies suggest that HIV disease may indeed be a risk factor for the development of cortical cataract. This report further characterizes potential lens abnormalities associated with HIV and AIDS by clearly

In the human eye, a transparent cornea and lens combine to form the "refracton" to focus images on the retina. This requires the refracton to have a high refractive index "n," mediated largely by extracellular collagen fibrils in the corneal stroma and the highly concentrated crystallin proteins in the cytoplasm of the lens fiber cells. Transparency is a result of short-range order in the spatial arrangement of corneal collagen fibrils and lens crystallins, generated in part by post-translational modifications (PTMs). However, while corneal collagen is remodeled continuously and replaced, lens
