Cytochemical studies on the PAS-positive and metachromatic substances in the cells of enteric epithelium of Achoea janata (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera).

Of the different polysaccharides present in the cells of insects the PAS-positive and metachromatic substances were studied in the cells of the enteric epithelium of the moth Achoea janata during its larval period and following metamorphosis. The amounts of both the substances progressively decrease in sequential pupal stages. The reaction intensity at the cell apex is higher than at the cell periphery. Reduction in the amount of carbohydrate material in the epithelial cells of the mid-gut is associated with change in intracellular localization (by vanishing from definite sites, not by migrati

Lethal and Sublethal Effects of Three Novel Insecticides on Biological Parameters of Pink Bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae).

Pink bollworm (Pectinophora gossypiella) is a serious pest of cotton that causes huge economic losses in major cotton-growing regions. The development of resistance to transgenic Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab in India has led to long-term reliance on insecticides, thus enables the larvae to experience sublethal effects due to its concealed feeding behavior. This study investigated the impact of sublethal concentrations (LC10 and LC30) of emamectin benzoate, spinetoram, and spinosad on P. gossypiella. The results showed that emamectin benzoate was more toxic to P. gossypiella (LC50-2.12 mgL-1) than spineto

Variation in Label-Rate Insecticide Efficacy and Control Failure Risk Among Brazilian Populations of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a key insect pest of maize in Brazil. However, the evolution of insecticide resistance has raised concerns about the risk of control failures under field conditions. This study assessed insecticide efficacy and estimated the risk of control failure in Brazilian populations of S. frugiperda exposed to selected insecticides. Nine field populations were collected from representative maize-producing regions of Brazil during the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 seasons. Early third-instar (L3) larvae from these populations were exposed to the highest label r

Physiological Status of Rice Leaf-Roller Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) Adults Trapped by Sex Pheromone and Floral Odor.

The rice leaf-roller Cnaphalocrocis medinalis is an important migratory pest of rice. We conducted a study to determine the physiological status of adults trapped by a sex pheromone and floral odor. In the immigrant group, the number of males trapped by the floral odor was greater than the number caught by sex pheromone trapping. The volume of testes was similar in the above two trapping methods but was smaller than in the sweep net method. The ovary developmental grade, mating rate, and number of matings of females caught in floral odor trap were higher than in those caught in the sweep net.

Metabolomics to target insecticidal compounds of Cenostigma pluviosum var. peltophoroides against Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda is the most prevalent plague in crops associated with a reduction in corn production by up to 34%. Pesticides have been used to reduce this plague, but they cause several environmental problems including resistance, ecological imbalance, and toxicity to the final consumer. The use of plant extracts has been an effective manner of eradicating this plague from crop plantations. In this sense, the hexane, EtOAc, and EtOH/H2O fractions from EtOH extract from different parts of Cenostigma pluviosum were investigated against this fall armyworm leading to a per

Toxicity of Essential Oils to Diaphania hyalinata (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) and Selectivity to Its Parasitoid Trichospilus pupivorus (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae).

Diaphania hyalinata (Linnaeus, 1767) is one of the main pests of the cucurbit crops. Biological control and botanicals are used in integrated pest management (IPM), especially in agro-ecological agricultures where the use of synthetic pesticides is restricted. Toxicological effects of plant essential oils on target and nontarget organisms should be evaluated to determine its use in IPM. The toxicity of ginger, peppermint, oregano, and thyme essential oils to D. hyalinata eggs, larvae, and pupae and their selectivity to the parasitoid Trichospilus pupivorus and the LC50, LC99 and the relative s

Mapping Quantitative Trait Loci for Resistance to Fall Armyworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Leaf-Feeding Damage in Maize Inbred Mp705.

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), is an agronomically important pest that severely limits maize (Zea mays (Linnaeus) [Poales: Poaceae]) production. This migrant insect devastates maize plants in many countries threatening the livelihood of millions. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) were mapped to identify chromosomal regions that control resistance to fall armyworm leaf-feeding and to identify molecular markers linked to the target loci for use in marker-assisted selection (MAS). A bi-parental mapping population, comprising 243 F2:3 families from the cross Mp705 (resistant)

Bio-Efficacy of Diatomaceous Earth, Household Soaps, and Neem Oil against Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Larvae in Benin.

Spodoptera frugiperda was first reported in Africa in 2016 and has since become a serious threat to maize/cereal production on the continent. Current control of the pest relies on synthetic chemical insecticides, which can negatively impact the environment and promote the development of resistance when used indiscriminately. Therefore, great attention is being paid to the development of safer alternatives. In this study, several biorational products and a semi-synthetic insecticide were evaluated. Two household soaps ("Palmida" and "Koto") and a detergent ("So Klin") were first tested for thei

Differences in winter cold hardiness reflect the geographic range disjunction of Neophasia menapia and Neophasia terlooii (Lepidoptera: Pieridae).

Predicting how rapid climate change will affect terrestrial biota depends on a thorough understanding of an organism's biology and evolutionary history. Organisms at their range boundaries are particularly sensitive to climate change. As predominantly terrestrial poikilotherms, insects are often geographically limited by extremes in ambient temperatures. We compared the cold hardiness strategies of two geographically widespread butterflies, the pine white, Neophasia menapia, and the Mexican pine white, N. terlooii (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), at the near-contact zone of their range boundaries. Comparison of Leg Regeneration Potency Between Holometabolous Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Hemimetabolous Locusta migratoria manilensis (Orthoptera: Acrididae).

After injury many insects could regenerate lost limb. In this study, Helicoverpa armigera Hubner and Locusta migratoria manilensis (Meyen, 1835) were chosen to compare the regeneration potency of holometabolous and hemimetabolous insects. We employed the classical approach of surgical excision to verify the regeneration ability and to investigate the factors that affect the extent of regeneration. The results found that H. armigera could regenerate intact legs when the larval legs were excised at the first and second instar and that legs of adult H. armigera had a close relationship with their

Comparative field efficacy of synthetic insecticides and plant extracts against Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) in Lubumbashi, DR Congo.

The invasive tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), is a very destructive pest that poses a major threat to tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) production in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), causing extensive yield losses through larval feeding on leaves, stems, and fruits. Chemical insecticides remain the primary control method, but resistance development, biodiversity loss and environmental concerns necessitate alternative strategies. This study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of synthetic and botanical insecticides against T. absoluta during two consecutive cropping seasons 2023-20

Metabolic depression drives discontinuous gas exchange in diapause pupae of Sericinus montelus (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae): a seasonal adaptation strategy.

Adaptive shifts in respiratory patterns during insect diapause represent a key strategy for coping with seasonal adversity, yet the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain poorly understood. Using the swallowtail butterfly Sericinus montelus Gray as a model, this study investigated the regulatory roles of diapause and temperature on respiratory patterns by comparing gas exchange patterns and metabolic characteristics of pupae under different photoperiods and temperature conditions. The results demonstrated that the metabolic rate of diapause-destined pupae was significantly lower than that of

Non-Invasive Sampling Reveals Genetic Differentiation and Lineage Structure in the Rare Butterfly Luehdorfia chinensis Leech (Lepidoptera Papilionidae).

Conservation genetics research on rare and legally protected butterflies is often constrained by restrictions on destructive sampling, resulting in longstanding knowledge gaps regarding population structure and evolutionary differentiation. Non-invasive sampling (NIS) offers a potential solution, yet its reliability for generating conservation-relevant genetic data in endangered Lepidoptera remains insufficiently evaluated. The feasibility of NIS was assessed in the Chinese endemic butterfly Luehdorfia chinensis by comparing DNA yield and quality from naturally shed materials, including larval

Population biology of the potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), in two potato cropping systems in Israel.

The life cycle, within-field distribution, crop damage and impact of natural enemies of the potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) were investigated in two potato cropping systems. The two systems differed in soil type (sandy vs. loess) which in turn affected the choice of cultivars, irrigation programme, insecticide application method (ground vs. aerial), and planting and harvest times. From mid-April to the end of May, almost twice as many moths were caught in pheromone traps in sandy than in loess fields. Highest infestation of tubers was found before harvest, and infestation w

DNA barcoding and morphology resolve the identity of the Seasonal Hyperacute Panuveitis-associated Gazalina chrysolopha (Lepidoptera; Notodontidae) in Nepal.

Moths of the genus Gazalina are implicated in the etiology of Seasonal Hyperacute Panuveitis (SHAPU), an enigmatic eye disease prevalent in Nepal. However, the precise causative species has remained unconfirmed due to a historical reliance on purely morphological identification. To definitively identify the responsible species, we collected Gazalina specimens from Dhorpatan Municipality, one of the epicentres of the SHAPU outbreak in Baglung District, western Nepal. We employed an integrative taxonomic approach, combining morphological evaluation with molecular phylogenetic analysis of a fragm
