BACKGROUND: Unplanned pregnancy is a significant problem in Australia. Local data pertaining to use of the levonorgestrel-releasing intra-uterine device (LNG-IUD), and associated factors are limited. The aim of this analysis was to calculate prescribing rates of the LNG-IUD in Australia, including trends in prescribing and associations with socio-demographic factors, in order to increase understanding regarding potential use.
METHODS: We examined prescriptions for the LNG-IUD recorded in the national Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) from 2008 to 2012. Prescribing trends were examined acco

UNLABELLED: The World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provide recommendations for use of emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs), including levonorgestrel (LNG) and combined oral contraceptives (COCs). A new ECP formulation, ulipristal acetate (UPA), is now available worldwide. To determine whether LNG, UPA or COC (Yuzpe) ECPs are safe for women with certain characteristics or medical conditions, we searched the PubMed and Cochrane databases for articles published from date of inception until May 2015 pertaining to the safety of LNG, UPA or Yu

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between premenopausal use of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system and cancer incidence in Finland with a special focus on endometrial adenocarcinoma.
METHODS: All Finnish women aged 30-49 years using a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system for treatment of menorrhagia in 1994-2007 (n=93,843) were identified from the National Reimbursement Registry and linked to the Finnish Cancer Registry data. The incidence of cancers in levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system users was compared with that in the general population.

CONTEXT: It is important to understand why some women use levonorgestrel emergency contraceptive pills repeatedly, because the method is not intended for repeated use, and current evidence suggests that it is approximately 77% effective at preventing pregnancy.
METHODS: An anonymous patient survey of 1,040 women aged 18-29 purchasing levonorgestrel at Planned Parenthood clinics in Utah was conducted during a 4-6-week period in 2007. Chi-square tests and analyses of variance were used to examine associations between selected characteristics and level of levonorgestrel use. Logistic regression

BACKGROUND: Correctly placed levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine systems (LNG-IUSs) are rarely associated with intrauterine pregnancy when pregnancy occurs. LNG-IUS retrieval, termination of pregnancy and conservative management if retracted strings prevent ready removal are the usual clinical options given to women. The conservative course raises concerns about teratogenesis related to high local progestin exposure for the developing fetus.
STUDY DESIGN: This case report describes combined saline hysteroscopy and ultrasound to retrieve an LNG-IUS at less than 9 weeks of gestational age. A

Intrauterine device is a popular cost-effective method of contraception known worldwide. It is extremely effective, with pregnancy rates comparable to tubal ligation (5-year cumulative rate varying from 0.5 to 1.1). LNG-IUS increases in popularity and may be used as the method of choice for adults because it offers non-contraceptive benefits: slight menstrual bleeding, decreased number of incidents of dysmenorrhea, and reduced pain associated with endometriosis. The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) provides a release rate of 20 microg/24 h of levonorgestrel. The hormone r

INTRODUCTION: Complications of copper load intrauterine devices, including ectopic pregnancies are well reported. Rates of ectopic pregnancy are 0.6 to 1.1% per year. However, the levonorgestrel intrauterine device has been described as more protective against ectopic pregnancies due to the addition of the hormone levonorgestrel. The hormone released from the intrauterine device causes some systemic effects, but local effects such as glandular atrophy and stromal decidualization, in addition to foreign body reaction, are dominant. Few case reports have described ampullary ectopic pregnancies.

Using both IN VITRO and IN VIVO approaches, we studied the antagonism exerted by the synthetic progestin levonorgestrel on estrogen-induced prolactinomas, considering that levonorgestrel shows partial androgenic properties and that androgens inhibit estrogen-induced prolactin synthesis and secretion. In the tumors, binding of estrogens to their receptors was competed neither by progesterone receptor ligands nor by androgen receptor ligands, ruling out direct inhibitory effects of these drugs on tumor development. Progestin binding was competed by the progesterone receptor agonists progesterone

The levonorgestrel containing intrauterine system is an effective and safe form of long-term yet reversible birth control. Intrauterine contraception use in the United States fell dramatically after early studies reported an association between intrauterine contraception use and later tubal infertility. Subsequent evaluation suggests that these early studies were biased. Users often experience menstrual disturbances. Informing patients of these common side effects is important to improve compliance. In addition to its contraceptive effect, the levonorgestrel intrauterine system offers potentia

The combination of levonorgestrel and quinestrol (EP-1) has been shown to have anti-fertility effects on several wild rodents, but the mechanism underlying these effects is poorly understood. We investigated the effects of EP-1 and each of its components, levonorgestrel (P) and quinestrol (E), on the fertility of Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii) by using a gastric gavage method. The doses for EP-1, E and P were 1, 0.34 and 0.66 mg/kg body weight, respectively. Male voles (n = 98) were treated daily for 5 or 14 days, then the testes and epididymides were collected, weighed and examined hi

It is likely that mifepristone or levonorgestrel in the future will find extended use for contraceptive purposes. It is therefore essential to characterize the modes of action of these compounds. To assess the effect on the human Fallopian tube, 24 women with regular menstrual cycles and proven fertility, admitted to the hospital for voluntary sterilization by laparoscopic technique, were randomly allocated to a control or one of two treatment groups. Treatments were given with either a single dose of 200 mg mifepristone or 0.75 mg levonorgestrel in two doses 12 h apart, on day LH+2. Surgery w

Epidemiological studies suggesting a possible association between the use of combined oral contraceptives and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease have led to extensive investigations into the effect of oral contraceptives on lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, and on hemostasis. Since this association was originally suggested, the steroid dose in oral contraceptives has been significantly reduced and new progestogens have been developed. Also, triphasic formulations have been introduced which offer a well-balanced estrogen/progestogen ratio, allowing a further reduction in the progestog

Adult, female baboons (Papio hamadryas) were administered orally once 18 h p.c., either 1.6 mg STS 557 (17 alpha-cyanomethyl-17 beta-hydroxy-estra-4;9(10)-dien-3-one) or 1.6 mg levonorgestrel. Investigations of the bone-marrow cells of these animals showed, compared to untreated controls, no signs of increased chromosome aberrations caused by the substances. The relative frequency of chromosome aberrations were estimated for controls: STS 557: levonorgestrel with 0.60 +/- 0.35 : 0.55 +/- 0.39 : 0.92 +/- 0.46%, respectively. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate endocervical and vaginal environment changes in women using a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS).
METHODS: A quasi-experimental study included sixty women who had an LNG-IUS inserted in the Family Planning Clinic of UNICAMP between April and November of 2016. Women in reproductive age, non-pregnant, without the use of antibiotics and contraceptives seeking for LNG-IUS insertion were selected for this study. All women were evaluated with regard to vaginal and endocervical pH, vaginal and endocervical Gram-stained bacterioscopy, and Pap-smear before an

Levonorgestrel (LNG), a synthetic 19 nor-testosterone derivative, is widely used for emergency contraception. It is well known that LNG prevents ovulation only when given prior to the surge of serum luteinizing hormone (LH) during the periovulatory phase of the menstrual cycle. This observation suggests that LNG, given its contraceptive efficacy, has additional effects other than those affecting ovulation. In this study, we have evaluated the effects on human sperm functionality of uterine flushings (UF) obtained from women at day LH + 1 of a control cycle (CTR-LH + 1) and after receiving LNG
