The impact of childhood trauma and daily life experiences on emotional and psychotic symptom intensity in psychosis: An experience sampling study.

Adverse childhood experiences create vulnerability to psychosis through biological and cognitive changes, and that may be observed as an increased emotional and psychotic response to daily life experiences in adulthood. This study aims to examine the effects of childhood maltreatment on psychotic patients' daily stress and emotional and psychotic intensity related to various experiences throughout the day. Daily activities and events, and emotional and psychotic intensity of forty-one psychotic patients were assessed with the Experience Sampling Method. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ)

'I was cracking more than everyone else': young adults' daily life experiences of hypermobility and jaw disorders.

Most studies on general joint hypermobility (GJH) and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are quantitative and have concluded that joint hypermobility is a risk factor for development of TMD. The present qualitative study aimed to explore young adults' daily life experiences of GJH, specifically these relating to jaw function, and their experiences of medical and dental care providers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine young adults (18-22 yr of age) and data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. The overarching thematic category that emerged was 'Hypermobility in da

The Effects of Cannabis on Female Reproductive Health Across the Life Course.

Introduction: Cannabis is commonly used for its medicinal and therapeutic benefits and is also widely used as a recreational drug. Cannabis use has been increasing in Canada, including among Canadian women of reproductive age. Post-legalization, further increases in cannabis use are expected due to increased availability and lowered perceptions of harm. Although cannabinoids are well known for their effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems, endocannabinoid receptors have also been characterized throughout the female reproductive tract. Cannabinoids may affect many aspects of femal

Life events and donor lapse among blood donors in Denmark.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The likelihood of donating blood changes over the life course, with life events shown to influence entry to and exit from the donor population. While these previous findings provide valuable insights for donor management, blood collection agencies need to be cautious about generalizing findings to other countries as blood donor behaviour is context-specific. To examine cross-country variations in donor behaviour, the repeatability of a previous Dutch study on life events and blood donor lapse is examined by using a sample of Danish donors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Reg

Making Good in Unpromising Places: The Development and Cultivation of Redemption Scripts Among Long-Term Prisoners.

Generally regarded as an institution which frustrates rather than enables the process of desisting from crime, the potential for prisoners to find redemption in prison seems bleak. Despite unpromising conditions within the prison, we find strong evidence of reform and a desire to make amends among a cohort of long-term prisoners. While these prisoners were all participating in a rehabilitation program, their narratives of reform were highly individualized and situated in the context of their various experiences of long sentences. However, we report that these individualized accounts of reform

Patterns of Adverse Childhood Experiences in Juveniles Who Sexually Offended.

Juveniles who sexually offended (JSOs) are differentially burdened with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). The present study used Latent Class Analysis (LCA) to derive subtypes of JSOs according to their patterns of 10 different ACEs. An extensive file analysis of 322 male JSOs ( M = 14.14, SD = 1.94) revealed five subtypes with (a) multiple (9.0%), (b) mainly family related (17.1%), (c) mainly peer related (21.7%), (d) mainly neglectful (18.6%), and (e) little/no (33.5%) ACEs. Differences among ACE subtypes with regard to several offense and victim characteristics (e.g., the use of penetra

The Relationship between Traumatic Life Events and Hoarding Symptoms: A Multi-Method Approach.

Hoarding Disorder is characterized by difficulties with discarding and frequently excessively acquiring possessions, resulting in substantial clutter. Previous research has implicated trauma in the development of hoarding, but no study to date has examined the relationship between trauma and hoarding using hypothetical hoarding paradigms. This study investigated the association between traumatic events and both self-report and hypothetical indices of hoarding symptoms. We predicted that frequency of trauma would be associated with greater hoarding symptoms (across self-report and hypothetical

The Perceptions of Important Elements of Caregiving for a Left Ventricular Assist Device Patient: A Qualitative Meta-Synthesis.

BACKGROUND: The use of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is becoming increasingly common in patients with end-stage heart failure. Many LVAD programs require patients to have a caregiver before receiving a device. There are few studies exploring the experience, burden, and impacts on caregivers of patients with LVADs. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to synthesize the qualitative literature regarding caregiver's perceptions about caring for an adult LVAD patient. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsychInfo, and Web of Science to find English articles on the topic of LVAD careg

Stressful life events, worry, and rumination predict depressive and anxiety symptoms in young adolescents.

PROBLEM: Depression and anxiety are highly prevalent and frequently comorbid mental health disorders that often manifest during childhood and adolescence. The purpose of this study was to prospectively examine potential common underlying mechanisms predicting the development of depressive and anxiety symptoms to identify mutual underlying modifiable risk factors to target with mental health promotion and prevention interventions. METHODS: A community-based sample of 11- to 15-year-old adolescents participated in a prospective, longitudinal pilot study with three waves of data collection over

Gene environment interaction studies in depression and suicidal behavior: An update.

Increasing evidence supports the involvement of both heritable and environmental risk factors in major depression (MD) and suicidal behavior (SB). Studies investigating gene-environment interaction (G × E) may be useful for elucidating the role of biological mechanisms in the risk for mental disorders. In the present paper, we review the literature regarding the interaction between genes modulating brain functions and stressful life events in the etiology of MD and SB and discuss their potential added benefit compared to genetic studies only. Within the context of G × E investigation, thus far

Unexpected suicide and irrational thinking in adolescence: a case report.

This report aims to draw attention to the fragility of adolescents' mind and irrational thinking in adolescence that might lead to suicide due to unusual experiences, by presenting a case of completed suicide with its unusual etiology. The victim, a 13 years old boy, had a quarrel with his mother as she sacrificed his pet, a cock, to prepare for dinner. Because of this, the victim had denied to join the family for dinner and wanted to be alone. While the family having dinner, a passing by neighbor realized that the victim was suspended with a ligature around his neck, in the backyard of the ho

The impact of mental health and traumatic life experiences on antiretroviral treatment outcomes for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Potent antiretroviral therapy (ART) has transformed HIV from a death sentence to a chronic illness. Accordingly, the goal of HIV care has shifted from delaying death to achieving optimal health outcomes through ART treatment. ART treatment success hinges on medication adherence. Extensive research has demonstrated that the primary barriers to ART adherence include mental illness, especially depression and substance abuse, as well as histories of traumatic experiences such as childhood sexual and physical abuse. These psychosocial factors are highly prevalent in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLW

Antecedent life events of binge-eating disorder.

The present study investigated the occurrence of life events preceding the onset of disturbed eating in binge-eating disorder (BED). In a case-control design, 162 matched pairs of black and white women with BED and women with no current psychiatric disorder, and 107 matched pairs of women with BED and a current general psychiatric disorder were recruited from the community for the New England Women's Health Project. Life events in the year before the onset of disturbed eating were assessed retrospectively with an investigator-based interview. Women with BED reported exposure to a significantly

Aging happens: experiences of Swiss women living alone.

The purpose of this study was to give beginning insights into how aging is experienced by women living alone in Switzerland. A feminist methodology was used to gather and interpret 17 interviews conducted with a selected group of 9 older women living alone. Interviews were taped and transcribed for hermeneutic analysis; major themes were developed. Aging happens, Independence, Being vulnerable, Memory and aging, and If I had been a boy were the themes discovered. These experiences represent how aging is shaped by individual life courses, sociocultural conditions along with gender and class.

Life events preceding suicide by young people.

BACKGROUND: Life events are often reported to precede suicide. This paper aims to determine the frequency, timing and type of life events preceding suicide by young people and those with and without a mental illness. METHOD: Informants, usually family members, were interviewed for a sample of young (less than 35 years) suicides. Information was recorded on events occurring in the 6 months before death. Equivalent information was obtained for living controls who had been matched for age and gender and obtained through the general practices of the suicides. RESULTS: Suicide was associated with

Postherpetic neuralgia in the cancer patient.

Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common and devastating complication of acute herpes zoster (HZ). HZ occurs more frequently in the patient with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and with certain leukemias and lymphomas. PHN occurs more frequently in the elderly, in patients with severe pain in the acute stage, and in patients with lesions in the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve. Pain from PHN is often debilitating and difficult to treat. A wide variety of therapeutic approaches have been advocated over the years, but most are not very effective. Early aggressive treatment of

Nature and consequences of stressful life events in homosexual HIV-positive men: a review.

A great deal of research has been conducted into the stressful experiences that befall HIV-infected individuals. In this review we have focused on the work that has been conducted with HIV-positive homosexual males and have examined issues concerning the measurement, nature and consequences of stressful life events. It is apparent that, in consort with most other life events research, the measurement of events in this patient group is affected by methodological difficulties. Such difficulties may have, in particular, led to the observation by some investigators that HIV-positive homosexual men

Events and the onset of eating disorders: correcting an "age old" myth.

BACKGROUND: Previous reports have suggested differences between early and late onset cases both in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. In anorexia nervosa, women with late onset are thought to be more likely to develop symptoms in response to life events than early onset cases. Women developing anorexia in response to life events are also considered to show different background features. In bulimia nervosa, it is not known whether rates of life events before onset differ in bulimics who develop their disorder at different stages in life. METHOD: Previously published data were reanalyzed to

[Habitual abortions: psychogenic and/or induced psychopathology].

Infertility is felt nowadays as a personal affront, quite intolerable, and RSA are an emblematic example of that personal and social failure, failure of the woman and of the couple, failure of the doctor too, failure of their common project. No wonder if those recurrences open the way to the problem of cause and/or consequences for those women whose pregnancy regularly begins and as regularly sees its evolution thwarted. The hypothesis of a psychological factor not excluding but rather potentialising a somatic one, should work as an incentive to important predictive studies, the best means for
