Environmental exposures and intergenerational cardiovascular risk: epigenetic reprogramming via parental exercise.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a predominant cause of global mortality. The spectrum of traditional risk factors is rapidly expanding, largely driven by the modern cardiovascular exposome. This comprehensive exposome encompasses environmental hazards, sedentary lifestyles, and severe psychosocial stress. Clinical management has evolved toward an integrated system to counteract these threats, yet traditional strategies primarily target the middle and late stages of pathogenesis. Addressing this limitation, modern research has shifted its focus to intergenerational effects. At the molecula

Friend or foe: the gut microbiota as a modulator of disease trajectory in trauma, surgery, and critical illness.

The connections between host physiology and the gut microbiome continue to grow as we learn how both the composition and function of the microbiota can impact organ systems beyond the gastrointestinal tract (e.g. the liver, lungs, kidneys, brain). An individual's unique life history plays an important role in shaping the gut microbiota, whose composition and functional output may influence the clinical course and outcomes following a major physiologic perturbation such as surgery or trauma in a manner that extends beyond host genetics. Alterations in the gut microbiota that occur during the co

On-demand self-care products: a systematic scoping review of user perspectives.

On-demand sexual and reproductive health (SRH) products are used or consumed on an as-needed basis, around specific and immediate sexual events, to reduce the risk of unwanted health outcomes. To date, understandings of how on-demand SRH products contribute to self-care are relatively under-explored. Our systematic scoping review of available published research explored acceptability of SRH on-demand self-care from the perspectives of users across diverse regions of the world. Studies from 20 countries across four WHO regions indicated strong acceptability of on-demand self-care SRH products d

An interdisciplinary fetal neonatal neurology collaborative promotes integrative life-course brain health.

A proposed interdisciplinary fetal neonatal neurology collaborative offers life-course brain health training across three time-sensitive teaching opportunities. The educational organization includes a broad representation of inter-related fields. Formal training will re-enforce career-long learning that fosters creative thinking. Acquiring a life-course perspective of brain health can contribute solutions to the global public health crisis involving neurological and mental health disorders across the lifespan. Teaching transdisciplinary interventions begins with parental childhood and reproduc

Life-course nutrition strategies for Korean middle-aged adults across biological transitions, nutritional burdens, and a community-linked precision nutrition model: a narrative review.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the nutritional challenges faced by Korean middle-aged adults (40-64 years) from a life-course and biological transition perspective and to propose systems-based precision nutrition strategies for this critical stage of the lifespan. METHODS: In this narrative review, PubMed, Medline, and Web of Science were searched for articles published between January 2010 and November 2025 using terms such as "middle aged nutrition," "healthy aging," "life course nutrition," "sarcopenia," "precision nutrition," and "chronic diseases." Policy documents and major national cohort and

The salience of cancer and the "survivor" identity for people who have completed acute cancer treatment: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Globally, there are nearly 33 million persons who have survived 5 or more years after a diagnosis of cancer [1]. We explore the salience of cancer in such people's self-concept as an important element for creating patient-centered care for those living with a cancer history. METHODS: Our data are responses to a free-listing exercise and subsequent qualitative interviews with 53 individuals aged between 45 and 74 who were diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma or breast or prostate cancer at least 3 years prior and had completed acute treatment. Participants lived in the Baltimore-Wash

Violence from parents in childhood and obesity in adulthood: using food in response to stress as a mediator of risk.

Guided by a life course perspective and concepts from models of stress and coping, this study tested the extent to which self-reported profiles of physical and psychological violence in childhood from parents were associated with greater odds of obesity in adulthood. This study also examined the extent to which adults' greater use of food in response to stress served as a mediator of potential associations of risk. Multivariate regression models were estimated using data from 1650 respondents in the 1995-2005 National Survey of Midlife in the U.S. (MIDUS). Results indicated that respondents wh

A lifespan approach to biological aging: Early adversity, past-year trauma, and telomere length in women.

Adverse experiences over the lifespan can increase risk for poor health outcomes, likely operating in part through accelerated biological aging. From a life course perspective, the extent to which adverse experiences in adulthood predict biological aging will vary as a function of early life adversity, yet few studies have tested this. In this cross-sectional, pre-registered study, we examined associations of early life adversity and past-year potentially traumatic events and their interaction with telomere length in a sample of racially and ethnically diverse and predominantly low-income wome

Psoriasis: to treat or to manage?

The recognition of psoriasis as a systemic disorder with characteristic skin symptoms and associated diseases has changed treatment concepts substantially. The complexity of psoriasis disease not only requires appropriate therapy but also weight-loss and smoking cessation programmes as well as trigger factor elimination. The term 'management' may better reflect the aim for a holistic approach of disease control. Comorbidity and the presence of psoriatic arthritis are important denominators for drug selection. However, there is a lack of prospective data substantiating a benefit of associated d

Sexual Orientation Differences in Alcohol Use Disorder Across the Adult Life Course.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual orientation‒related disparities in alcohol use disorder are well-established. Yet, the degree to which sexual orientation differences in alcohol use disorder vary across the life course is poorly understood. There is also a limited understanding of how exposure to minority stressors and their relationship with alcohol use disorder vary as a function of age. METHODS: Using nationally representative data collected in 2012-2013, authors used sex-stratified time-varying effect models to estimate age-specific prevalence rates of alcohol use disorder among heterosexual and sexu

Examining accumulation and adaptation in psychosocial and material exposures and self-rated health: A fixed-effects approach within income groups using German panel data.

AIMS: This study investigates how continuous exposure to psychosocial and material factors influences self-rated health (SRH) trajectories in different income groups, uniquely contrasting two mechanisms from a life course perspective: accumulation, where disadvantages intensify with longer exposure, and adaptation, where individuals adjust to adverse conditions. METHODS: Based on the German Socio-Economic Panel (1994-2017), we analyzed data from 31,961 women and 29,149 men (18-75 years; ⩾2 observations). Psychosocial and material factors (e.g. financial/occupational worries, housing/income di

Stopping the Intergenerational Risk of Diabetes-From Mechanisms to Interventions: A Report on Research Supported by Pathway to Stop Diabetes.

Embedded in the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) hypothesis, maternal hyperglycemia in utero, from preexisting diabetes or gestational diabetes mellitus, predisposes the offspring to excess adiposity and heightened risk of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes development. This transmission creates a vicious cycle increasing the presence of diabetes from one generation to another, leading to the question: How can we interrupt this vicious cycle? In this article, we present the current state of knowledge on the intergenerational transmission of diabetes from epidemiological life co

Desire for a sense of power and religious suicide in psychobiographical research: combining personality and sociocultural theories.

The article presents two theoretical perspectives that provide a helpful framework in psychobiographical research, especially when psychobiographies concern religious suicide. The first is typical in contemporary psychology, a subjective analysis focused on the individual, looking at life course/lifetime in the light of personality psychology. The second one is represented by anthropological research on the concept of honour-shame and the sociological works of E. Durkheim. Contemporary psychobiography should consider sociocultural context and refer to social sciences (anthropology, sociology).

Slow public health: a temporal-relational framework for migration and aging in the Global South.

Population aging and migration represent two of the most profound demographic transformations shaping the Global South. Conventional public health approaches have typically relied on standardized interventions and measurable outcomes, yet such frameworks often fail to capture the temporal, relational, and contextual dimensions affecting aging populations. This perspective introduces "Slow Public Health" as a temporal-relational framework for public health practice in migration and aging contexts. Building on the Slow Movement, Slow Medicine, life-course thinking, and asset-based community deve

Melasma: When Dermal Photoageing Precedes Melanocyte Ageing.

Melasma is a chronic relapsing hyperpigmentary disorder with difficult long-term management. In this review, melasma is proposed as a disorder of persistent melanocyte activation sustained within a photoaged dermal microenvironment. This microenvironment, composed of senescent fibroblasts, UV-activated sebocytes and vascular components, functions as a dermal melanogenic field that continuously provides melanogenic signalling. We further propose that melasma may arise within a melanogenic window, a phase characterized by a photoaged dermis and melanocytes that remain responsive to melanogenic s

Phases of the qualitative research interview with institutionalized elderly individuals.

The in-depth, open-ended formal interview is a mainstay of qualitative nursing research. However, difficulties with this method of data collection are common with institutionalized elderly individuals. During a qualitative study of urinary incontinence among nursing home residents, six distinct phases of the formal interview were identified: introducing, personalizing, reminiscing, contextualizing, closing, and reciprocating. These phases were discovered in the course of analyzing field notes and verbatim transcripts from open-ended formal interviews with 10 respondents. Allowing qualitative r

The Role of Child Maltreatment and Revictimization on Substance Use Trajectories Among Women Involved in the Criminal Justice System.

We explored the mechanisms underlying the relationship between trauma in childhood and adulthood and substance use initiation and recovery from opioid use disorder (OUD). We triangulated the perspectives of 20 women with current/previous OUD and 22 criminal legal and drug treatment professionals. Themes centered around the long-term effects of unaddressed childhood trauma, family- and partner-based trauma across the life course, sexual trauma, and traumatic events due to opioid use. Findings highlighted the unique trauma-related needs of women involved in the criminal legal system who also use
