Amnesia and recognition memory: a re-analysis of psychometric data.

The present study compared the recognition memory deficit in different groups of amnesics using scores from a standard test. The data, taken from a literature search, came from 33 studies reporting the performance of amnesic subjects on the recognition memory test (RMT) [77]. A total of 112 amnesic subjects were grouped according to their pathology. In addition, the analysis included subjects with schizophrenia, amygdala damage, or frontal lobe damage. Of these three nonamnesic groups, only the frontal lobe subjects were impaired on both RMT subtests, while the schizophrenics showed a dispropo

Altered Brain Activity and Functional Connectivity in Unilateral Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is an otologic emergency and could lead to social difficulties and mental disorders in some patients. Although many studies have analyzed altered brain function in populations with hearing loss, little information is available about patients with idiopathic SSNHL. This study is aimed at investigating brain functional changes in SSNHL via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS: Thirty-six patients with SSNHL and thirty well-matched normal hearing individuals underwent resting-state fMRI. Amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation

Frontal lobes pathology and dementia. An appraisal of the contribution of Leonardo Bianchi.

This paper which was inspired by Leonardo Bianchi's work, published in English a hundred years ago, summarizes the main features of frontal dementias, with particular emphasis on Pick's Disease (PiD) and on Frontal Lobe Dementia (FLD). We intend to examine on one hand whether these behavioral changes follow pathology strictly limited to the frontal lobes and on the other hand whether these changes truly constitute a dementia. Currently available data suggest the following conclusions: 1) Lesions to the frontal lobes produce a dementia which is clearly different from the typical picture of Alzh

A Rare Case of Human Herpesvirus 6 Meningitis in an Immunocompetent Asian Male Presented With a Severe Intractable Headache.

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) manifesting as a central nervous system (CNS) infection (especially meningoencephalitis) is reported as a primary infection in children and from reactivation in immunocompromised patients; however, it has rarely been reported in immunocompetent adults. Latent infections of the CNS can cause a myriad of clinical presentations ranging from a benign, febrile, self-resolving illness to limbic encephalitis, temporal lobe seizures, and neuropsychiatric symptoms such as behavioral disturbances and psychosis. No standard diagnostic criteria or management guidelines exist fo

Cerebral atrophy and its relation to cognitive impairment in Parkinson disease.

OBJECTIVE: Voxel-based morphometry was used to compare the amounts of gray matter in the brains of patients with Parkinson disease (PD) and normal control subjects (NCs) and to identify the specific regions responsible for cognitive dysfunction in PD. METHODS: Patients were classified into nondemented (ND) and demented (D) groups according to the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.), and a group comparison was performed. In the ND patients, a correlation was also performed between local gray matter density and the score on Raven Colored Progressive M

Late-onset temporal lobe epilepsy with unilateral mesial temporal sclerosis and cognitive decline: a diagnostic dilemma.

We present a patient with new onset temporal lobe epilepsy and cognitive decline in his sixth decade with unilateral hippocampal atrophy on structural brain imaging, compatible with mesial temporal sclerosis. This unusual clinical scenario presented a challenging differential diagnosis since it may overlap with primary cognitive disorders, including early-onset Alzheimer's disease and some forms of frontotemporal dementia, and the recently elucidated syndrome of non-paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis associated with voltage-gated potassium channel antibodies.

Accessory scrotum.

Usually limbic encephalitis (LE) is a paraneoplastic neurologic syndrome. LE symptoms can precede cancer even by a few years. Almost 50% of LE cases are connected with small cell lung carcinoma. Testis and breast cancers, granulomatous disease, thymoma, and teratomas are also often connected with LE. Other cases have infectious and autoimmunological aetiology. In LE limbic system dysfunction is observed, and it is accompanied by cerebellum and brain stem abnormalities as well as polyneuropathy. Paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis is sometimes a part of larger syndrome in which brain stem and sp

A meta-analysis of gray matter volume abnormalities in HIV patients.

HIV infection is known to have significant effects on central nervous system. This study conducted a meta-analysis of whole voxel-based morphometry (VBM) in HIV patients (N = 435) and HIV-uninfected controls (N = 397). This study observed a reduction of limbic lobe, cingulate gyrus, frontal lobe, middle frontal gyrus, sub-lobar, insula, inferior frontal gyrus and superior frontal gyrus volume in HIV patients. These morphological differences may be responsible for cognitive decline in HIV patients, as these brain regions are closely related to motor and memory functions. These results contribut

[Limbic system and partial seizures with psychoaffective signs].

INTRODUCTION: The limbic system, is associate to emotional behavior. Partial epileptic seizures are the expression of alterations of the temporal lobe, hippocampus and amygdala. In nonconvulsive episodes, autonomic alterations, visceral dysfunction and abnormal emotional states illustrate epileptic symptomatology. Fear responses, with possible connections to amygdala are presents in partial epileptic seizures. CLINICAL CASE: We present five patients with symptomatology mainly in emotional expression. Four had a structural lesion: one, multiple phacomatosis, two, tumors of the amygdala region

Two different mirror neuron pathways for social and non-social actions? A meta-analysis of fMRI studies.

Mirror neurons (MNs) represent a class of neurons that are activated when performing or observing the same action. Given their role in social cognition and previous research in patients with psychiatric disorders, we proposed that the human MN system (MNS) might display different pathways for social and non-social actions. To examine this hypothesis, we conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of 174 published human functional magnetic resonance imaging studies. Our findings confirmed the proposed hypothesis. Our results demonstrated that the non-social MN pathway exhibited a more classical pat

Successful treatment of severe abulia with co-beneldopa.

Abulia is a disorder of the executive and frontal lobe function. It is characterised by severe psychomotor slowing that is not due to depressive illness or catatonic schizophrenia. Abulia is thought to be due to disruption of the meso-cortico-limbic dopaminergic system. Preliminary evidence suggests that patients with abulia may respond to treatment with dopaminergic drugs. We extend this evidence by reporting a significant and sustained functional improvement in a severely abulic patient after treatment with co-beneldopa (Madopar).

Neuropsychological functioning in a patient with paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis.

A 54-year-old woman with clinically diagnosed paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis secondary to adenocarcinoma of the lung is described. Neuropsychological evaluation revealed intact visual perception, visual construction, language, speeded processing, and verbal abstract reasoning in the presence of a severe anterograde amnesia for both verbal and visual information. A profound consolidation problem is discussed in view of other diseases of the mesial temporal lobes resulting in impaired consolidation of new material.

Arousal and Consciousness in Focal Seizures.

Impaired consciousness during seizures severely affects quality of life for people with epilepsy but the mechanisms are just beginning to be understood. Consciousness is thought to involve large-scale brain networks, so it is puzzling that focal seizures often impair consciousness. Recent work investigating focal temporal lobe or limbic seizures in human patients and experimental animal models suggests that impaired consciousness is caused by active inhibition of subcortical arousal mechanisms. Focal limbic seizures exhibit decreased neuronal firing in brainstem, basal forebrain, and thalamic

[Paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis and epidermoid carcinoma of the pyriform].

Paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis is a syndrome characterised by behaviour changes, short-term memory loss and seizures. We report on a case of a 62-year-old man, ex-smoker who was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with seizures, and who had previously experienced behaviour changes. Tests revealed nothing notable, except for the CSF examination which revealed elevated protein and MRI findings indicating temporal lobe abnormalities. Once other diagnoses had been ruled out, neoplasm screening was initiated. Conventional imaging failed to identify the tumour. Antineuronal anti-Hu antibodies we

Accelerated Establishment of Limbic Seizures in Aging Krushinsky-Molodkina Audiogenic Rats Is Associated With Neurodegeneration and Downregulation of the Glutamatergic Transmission in the Hippocampus.

The prevalence of epileptic disorders is notably elevated in the elderly population. Meanwhile, epilepsy in aged patients is characterized by a distinct set of characteristics. However, the pecularities of molecular mechanisms underlying senile epileptogenesis still remain to be fully elucidated. The objective of the present study was to elucidate the specificity of seizure behavior and glutamatergic transmission in the hippocampus during the development of limbic/mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) in aging (18-month-old) Krushinsky-Molodkina (KM) audiogenic rats. To reproduce TLE conditions,

Origins of multisynaptic projections from the basal ganglia to the forelimb region of the ventral premotor cortex in macaque monkeys.

The ventral premotor cortex (PMv), occupying the ventral aspect of area 6 in the frontal lobe, has been implicated in action planning and execution based on visual signals. Although the PMv has been characterized by cortico-cortical connections with specific subregions of the parietal and prefrontal cortical areas, a topographical input/output organization between the PMv and the basal ganglia (BG) still remains elusive. In the present study, retrograde transneuronal labelling with the rabies virus was employed to identify the origins of multisynaptic projections from the BG to the PMv. The vi

Gray matter volume abnormalities and clinical correlates in OCD with exclusive washing dimension.

OBJECTIVE: Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is increasingly being recognized as a heterogeneous disorder with various symptom dimensions. In order to understand the neurobiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), it is important to understand the brain basis of homogeneous symptom groups. In this study we investigated the gray matter (GM) changes and correlates of an exclusively homogenous sample of OCD patients (washers with no other obsessive compulsive symptoms). METHOD: We compared the structural MRI scans (3T) using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) of washers (N = 35) with matched h

Distributed attribute representation in the superior parietal lobe during probabilistic decision-making.

Several studies have examined the neural substrates of probabilistic decision-making, but few have systematically investigated the neural representations of the two objective attributes of probabilistic rewards, that is, the reward amount and the probability. Specifically, whether there are common or distinct neural activity patterns to represent the objective attributes and their association with the neural representation of the subjective valuation remains largely underexplored. We conducted two studies (nStudy1  = 34, nStudy2  = 41) to uncover distributed neural representations of the objec

The interface between religion and psychosis.

OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to explore the interface between religion and psychosis, and to comment on its relevance in clinical practice. METHOD: The context of religious psychotic phenomena is briefly discussed, leading to an examination of the biological substrates of religious experiences, the hypothesized process of religious psychotic symptom formation, and the clinical implications when assessing religious delusions. A PubMED search was conducted to identify original research and review articles of relevance to the discussion. RESULTS: Religion is an enduring theme in psychosis, the un

Neurosurgical treatment of Tourette's syndrome: a critical review.

Some patients with Tourette's syndrome (TS) remain disabled despite conventional treatment. Recently, neurosurgical procedures have been reported to be potentially effective interventions for such intractable cases. Clinicians are now being asked to make recommendations to patients about these candidate operations. This review explores the reported experience with neurosurgical treatment of TS to assess critically the evidence regarding risks and benefits. Toward that end, the rationale for the various procedures and the relevant neuroanatomy are outlined and recommendations for patient select
