Soybean Oil, Linoleic Acid Source, in Lamb Diets: Intake, Digestibility, Performance, Ingestive Behaviour, and Blood Metabolites.

The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effects of soybean oil inclusion in diets on feeding behaviour, digestibility, performance, and blood metabolites of feedlot lambs. Forty non-castrated Santa Inês lambs with a mean age of 5 months and initial body weight of 34.88 ± 3.19 kg were used in a 40-day feeding trial. The lambs were distributed in five experimental diets with the inclusion of increasing soybean oil (SO) levels: 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 g/kg DM. The SO inclusion promoted a linear reduction in DM intake (p < 0.001), crude protein (CP, p < 0.001), non-fibrous carbohydra

The involvement and possible targeting of cardiolipins degradation and disturbed linoleic acid metabolism in cardiac atrophy under cancer cachexia.

Cardiac atrophy is one of the critical characteristics of cancer cachexia though its mechanisms had not been fully clarified. In the present study, to study the mechanisms of cardiac atrophy in cancer cachexia and search for possible drug targets, cancer cachexia mice bearing C26 colon tumor cells and cultured H9c2 cardiomyocytes induced with simulated cancer cachexia injuries were used as in vivo and in vitro model, respectively. Results of both spatial metabolomics and LC-MS non-targeted metabolomics analysis of heart tissues suggested the disturbance of glycerophospholipid and fatty acid me

Quasi-static and dynamic mechanical properties of a linoleic acid-modified, low-modulus bone cement for spinal applications.

BACKGROUND: Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is extensively used in spinal procedures such as vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, while its use in percutaneous cement discoplasty (PCD) is not yet widely spread. A main issue for both application sites, vertebra and disc, is the mismatch in stiffness between cement and bone, potentially resulting in adjacent vertebral fractures and adjacent segment disease. Tailoring the cement modulus using additives is hence an interesting strategy. However, there is a lack of data on the tensile and tension-compression fatigue properties of these cements

Ability of high fat diet to induce liver pathology correlates with the level of linoleic acid and Vitamin E in the diet.

Increased uptake of fat, such as through the ingestion of high fat diet (HFD), can lead to fatty liver diseases and metabolic syndrome. It is not clear whether certain fatty acids may be more pathogenic than others to the liver. Linoleic acid (LA) is the most abundant polyunsaturated fatty acid in the Western diet and its excessive consumption can lead to increased lipid peroxidation. We hypothesized that a high level of LA in HFD will contribute significantly to the hepatic steatosis and injury, whereas vitamin E (VIT-E) may reverse the effects from LA by inhibiting lipid peroxidation. To tes

Evaluating the effect of a mixture of two main conjugated linoleic acid isomers on hepatic steatosis in HepG2 cellular model.

Hepatic steatosis is an early form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), caused by abnormal fat deposition in the hepatocytes. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a group of positional and geometric dienoic isomers of linoleic acid that attract significant attention because of its beneficial effects on chronic diseases such as cancer, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. This study examined the influence of a mixture of two main CLA isomers (CLA-mix) on lipid accumulation and lipid metabolism-related genes using HepG2 cells treated with palmitic acid (PA) as an in vitro model for hepatic ste

The Ratio of Linoleic and Linolenic Acid in the Pre-hibernation Diet Influences NFκB Signaling in Garden Dormice During Torpor.

The fatty acid composition of a pre-hibernation diet can influence the depth and duration of metabolic suppression achieved by hibernators. More specifically, a diet high in n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) relative to n-3 PUFAs is essential to maximize torpor expression. However, few studies have investigated how diets with different n-6/n-3 PUFA ratios change stress-inducible cell signaling. Garden dormice (Eliomys quercinus) were fed one of three diets designed with different ratios of n-6 PUFA linoleic acid (LA) and n-3 PUFA linolenic acid (ALA). Then, NFκB signaling was assessed in

Conjugated Linoleic Acid Effects on Cancer, Obesity, and Atherosclerosis: A Review of Pre-Clinical and Human Trials with Current Perspectives.

Obesity and its comorbidities, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, are straining our healthcare system, necessitating the development of novel strategies for weight loss. Lifestyle modifications, such as exercise and caloric restriction, have proven effective against obesity in the short term, yet obesity persists because of the high predilection for weight regain. Therefore, alternative approaches to achieve long term sustainable weight loss are urgently needed. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a fatty acid found naturally in ruminant animal food products, has been identified

Evaluation of conjugated linoleic acid supplementation on markers of joint inflammation and cartilage metabolism in young horses challenged with lipopolysaccharide.

Seventeen yearling Quarter Horses were used in a randomized complete block design for a 56-d trial to determine ability of dietary CLA to mitigate joint inflammation and alter cartilage turnover following an inflammatory insult. Horses were blocked by age, sex, and BW, and randomly assigned to dietary treatments consisting of commercial concentrate offered at 1% BW (as-fed) supplemented with either 1% soybean oil (CON; n = 6), 0.5% soybean oil and 0.5% CLA (LOW; n = 5; 55% purity; Lutalin, BASF Corp., Florham Park, NJ), or 1% CLA (HIGH; n = 6) top-dressed daily. Linoleic and palmitoleic acid block streptokinase-mediated plasminogen activation and reduce severity of invasive group A streptococcal infection.

In contrast to mild infections of Group A Streptococcus (GAS) invasive infections of GAS still pose a serious health hazard: GAS disseminates from sterile sites into the blood stream or deep tissues and causes sepsis or necrotizing fasciitis. In this case antibiotics do not provide an effective cure as the bacteria are capable to hide from them very quickly. Therefore, new remedies are urgently needed. Starting from a myxobacterial natural products screening campaign, we identified two fatty acids isolated from myxobacteria, linoleic and palmitoleic acid, specifically blocking streptokinase-me

Salicylic acid peel incorporating triethyl citrate and ethyl linoleate in the treatment of moderate acne: a new therapeutic approach.

BACKGROUND: Acne affects many adolescents. Conventional therapy often results in side effects and poor adherence, and the treatment does not consider the psychological effect of acne on patients, which is comparable with that of disabling diseases. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of a peel (30% salicylic acid, triethyl citrate and ethyl linoleate) combined with a home therapy with three topical agents (triethyl citrate, ethyl linoleate and salicylic acid 0.5% cream, lotion) in moderate acne of the face. Immunological and metabolic effects of cis-9, trans-11-conjugated linoleic acid in subjects with birch pollen allergy.

Animal studies suggest that conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) may modulate the immune response, while studies in healthy human subjects have shown little effect and results are controversial. However, the effects of CLA may be more prominent in situations of immune imbalance, such as allergy. We studied the effects of the natural CLA isomer, cis-9, trans-11-CLA, on allergy symptoms and immunological parameters in subjects with birch pollen allergy. In a randomised, placebo-controlled study, forty subjects (20-46 years) with diagnosed birch pollen allergy received 2 g CLA/d in capsules, which cont

[Inhibiting properties of stable nitroxyl radicals in reactions of linoleic acid and linoleyl alcohol oxidation catalyzed by 5-lipoxygenase].

The inhibiting effects of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) and its 4-substituted derivatives in reactions of linoleyl acid or linoleyl alcohol oxidation catalyzed by potato tuber 5-lipoxygenase were investigated. Inhibiting properties of stable nitroxyl radicals in presence of lubrol and SDS were reduced at the transition from TEMPO to 4-hydroxy-TEMPO or 4-amino-TEMPO and increased at use of adamantane-1-carboxylic or 3-methyladamantane-1-carboxylic acid 1-oxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-4-yl esters. Short-term dietary conjugated linoleic acid supplementation does not enhance the recovery of immunodepleted dexamethasone-treated rats.

BACKGROUND: Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has been reported to decrease fat deposition, and increase lean body mass. This has been broadly inferred to mean that CLA alters protein turnover. However, data to test the effects of CLA on protein turnover are lacking. An enhancement in immune responses by CLA has also been demonstrated. AIM OF THE STUDY: The objective of this study was to determine the potential for dietary CLA and protein intervention to improve nutritional and functional recovery in an animal model of catabolic stress and immunodepletion. METHODS: Diets varying in their protei

Effects of dexamethasone and linoleic acid on hepatic secretion of biliary lipids and anionic polypeptide factor: In vivo and in vitro studies.

Synthetic glucocorticoids, such as dexamethasone, and diets enriched with unsaturated fatty acids have been shown to stimulate hepatic bile salt synthesis. This fact led us to investigate the effects of dexamethasone and linoleic acid supplementation on bile secretion. Cholesterol (Ch) and phospholipid secretions are bile acid dependent. Ch and phospholipid in bile are also highly bound to a small apoprotein, the anionic polypeptide factor (APF). In bile, APF may play a physiological role in stabilizing cholesterol:phospholipid vesicles and might also be important in the regulatory process of

Linoleic acid and protein thiol changes suggestive of oxidative damage in the plasma of patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome.

Patients with the acute lung injury syndrome ARDS are under oxidative stress from the disease and from treatment with high inspired oxygen concentrations. Oxidative stress can lead to molecular damage by a variety of reactive oxygen intermediates generated in the lung. In the present study we sequentially monitor changes in plasma total lipid linoleic acid fatty acid levels, using GC-MS, and express these as a function of changes in plasma protein thiol values. In nine out of eleven ARDS patients there was a relationship between loss of protein thiols and loss of total lipid linoleic acid. In

A multifunctional WPC-linoleic acid-EGCG complex: structural characterization, bioactivity, and application as a butter substitute in processed cheese.

Developing multifunctional ingredients for fat reduction without quality loss is challenging. This study developed a whey protein concentrate-linoleic acid-epigallocatechin gallate (WPC-LA-EGCG) ternary complex as a butter substitute in processed cheese. Multi-spectroscopy experiments and molecular docking simulations suggested that hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic, and electrostatic interactions reconfigured protein secondary structure. At optimal EGCG levels (<0.1%), the complex showed enhanced molecular flexibility, interfacial adsorption, emulsifying activity, and stability. In vitro, the com

Effects of Supplementing the Diets of Mice With Different Concentrations of Conjugated Linoleic Acid on the Anti-Inflammatory Function of the Mammary Gland.

In this study, we evaluated the impact of the dietary addition of different concentrations of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on the antioxidant capacity and anti-inflammatory effects of serum and breast tissue in mice. Twenty-four ICR mice (BW = 37.79 ± 2.17 g) at 7 days of pregnancy were divided into four groups (n = 6 per group): a control (CN) group, which was fed a normal diet, and three groups fed a normal diet supplemented with 0.5% CLA, 1% CLA, or 2% CLA. Each mouse had free access to food and water. After 49 days of feeding, mice were injected with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to induce in

Effects of Dietary Supplementation with Conjugated Linoleic Acid on Redox Marker Profiles and Neuroaxonal Degeneration in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

The revised ALS Functional Rating Scale (ALSFRS-R) and the blood plasma accumulation of neurofilament light chain (NfL) are key markers for tracking amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) progression. Based on recent studies indicating that dietary supplementation with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) may boost antioxidant enzyme activity in ALS patients, in this study, ALSFRS-R scores (and subscores), NfL and thiol-bound protein (P-SH) levels, and intracellular activity of antioxidant enzymes (G6PD and GSR) were measured in ALS patients after 6 months (T6) of treatment with riluzole (R) or riluzol
