This study utilized a pro-inflammatory exercise mode to explore potential linkages between increases in 9- and 13-hydroxy-octadecadienoic acid (9+13 HODE) and biomarkers for inflammation, oxidative stress, and muscle damage. Male (N=10) and female (N=10) runners ran at ∼70% VO2max for 1.5h followed by 30min of downhill running (-10%). Blood samples were taken pre-run and immediately-, 1-h-, and 24-h post-run, and analyzed for 9+13 HODE, F2-isoprostanes, six cytokines, C-reactive protein (CRP), creatine kinase (CK), and myoglobin (MYO). Gender groups performed at comparable relative heart rate

Hempseed oil (HSO) is extremely rich in unsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic (18:2 n-6) and α-linolenic (18:3 n-3) acids, which determine its high sensitivity to oxidative and photo-oxidative degradations that can lead to rancidity despite the presence of antioxidant compounds. The aim of this work was to evaluate which material/temperature/light solutions better preserve HSO quality during its shelf life and to test NIR as a rapid, non-destructive technique for monitoring oxidation phenomena. Futura 75 hemp seeds were cold-pressed; the oil was packed into 20 mL vials of four different

Although there remains controversy regarding the role of macronutrient balance in the etiology of obesity, the consumption of high-fat diets appears to be strongly implicated in its development. Evidence that fat oxidation does not adjust rapidly to acute increases in dietary fat, as well as a decreased capacity to oxidize fat in the postprandial state in the obese, suggest that diets high in fat may lead to the accumulation of fat stores. Novel data is also presented suggesting that in rodents, high-fat diets may lead to the development of leptin resistance in skeletal muscle and subsequent a

Dietary supplementation of fat can be an important source of energy to compensate for the reduction in dry matter intake in dairy cows during heat stress periods. Studies have reported that supplementing dairy cow diets with linseed oil (LO) can increase milk yield and enhance the levels of beneficial fatty acids, such as omega-3 fatty acids, in the milk. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of LO supplementation on milk fatty acids profile, milk yield and composition, and physiological parameters of grazing cows. The study was conducted in two seasons, one in spring and o

Antimicrobial-resistance genes (ARGs) are spread among bacteria by horizontal gene transfer, however, the effect of environmental factors on the dynamics of the ARG in water environments has not been very well understood. In this systematic review, we employed the regression tree algorithm to identify the environmental factors that facilitate/inhibit the transfer of ARGs via conjugation in planktonic/biofilm-formed bacterial cells based on the results of past relevant research. Escherichia coli strains were the most studied genus for conjugation experiments as donor/recipient in the intra-gene

All-inorganic cesium bismuth bromide perovskite quantum dots(Cs3Bi2Br9 PQDs) have emerged as promising alternatives to lead-based perovskite quantum dots with excellent performance due to their low toxicity, drawing extensive attention over recent decades. However, challenges remain in terms of their stability and the reliance on organic solvents during the preparation process. Herein, a novel synthesis method for Cs3Bi2Br9 PQDs is introduced, utilizing eco-friendly castor oil as both the solvent and ligand (CO-Cs3Bi2Br9). These PQDs display a vivid blue emission at 430 nm, with an impressive

Heme-initiated decomposition of unsaturated fatty acid hydroperoxides creates alkoxyl radicals that propagate a complex series of reactions to hydroxy, keto, epoxy and aldehydic products. Herein, among the products from the hematin-catalyzed degradation of 9-hydroperoxy-linoleic acid (9-HPODE), we observed a double peak on normal-phase HPLC that resolved on RP-HPLC into equal proportions of two epoxy-allylic ketones with identical UV spectra. Their proton NMR spectra were also indistinguishable and consistent with 9,10-trans-epoxy-11E-13-keto- and 9-keto-10E-12,13-trans-epoxy-octadecenoic acid

Milk fat globule (MFG) size is closely linked to milk lipid interfacial organization, but its association with membrane-associated lipid remodeling remains unclear. Here, milk composition, MFG size distribution, fatty acid profiles, and whole-milk lipidomics were analyzed in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)-supplemented cows. CLA supplementation reduced milk fat content and shifted MFGs toward smaller sizes. Whole-milk lipidomics showed that the small-MFG phenotype was accompanied by remodeling of membrane-associated lipid classes, particularly sphingolipids. Among major sphingolipids, hexosylce

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The liver is the main organ regulating metabolism. In spite of that, few studies examine liver metabolism in cachexia, a wasting syndrome associated with increased morbidity and mortality in cancer. Cachexia induces major metabolic disruption, inflammation and fat and lean mass loss. We have previously shown impairment of hepatic lipid metabolism in cancer cachexia that contributes to the aggravation of the symptoms. The present study addresses the effects of Conjugated Linoleic Acid supplementation upon liver lipid metabolism in cachectic rats.
METHODS: Male Wistar rats we

Inflammatory activity is evident in patients with chronic kidney disease with limited data available in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). We hypothesized that inflammation is an upstream event in the pathogenesis of ADPKD and may be a contributing factor in the disease severity and progression. Serum samples from 61 HALT study A group patients were compared with samples from 49 patients from HALT study B group with moderately advanced disease. Targeted MS analysis of bioactive lipid mediators as markers of inflammation was performed and correlated with eGFR and total kidney

Metabolic syndrome represents a clustering of risk factors related to an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Occurrence of both metabolic syndrome and diabetes and their vascular complications share several pathogenetic features including subclinical, low-grade inflammation, altered oxidative/antioxidant status, and persistent platelet activation. Despite the availability of multiple interventions to counteract these metabolic changes, including appropriate diet, regular exercise, weight control and drugs, epidemiological data are witnessing the growing trend of the pr

Studies were carried out in 36 adult male rats to determine the characteristics of lipid substances which, after infusion into the ileum, slow the stomach to caecum transit time of the head of a bean meal in the rat. Stomach to caecum transit time was measured by environmental hydrogen analysis. Ileal infusion of a range of free fatty acids including petroselinic, oleic, myristoleic, erucic, linoleic, and linolenic all significantly slowed stomach to caecum transit time, as did the detergents (sodium bis (2-ethyl hexyl) sulphosuccinate and sodium linoleyl sulphate), the triglyceride corn oil,

Italian hard cooked types of cheese, like Parmigiano Reggiano and Grana Padano, are characterised by positive nutritional qualities. In fact, they contain substances that have particular biological activities, and therefore they can be fully considered, according to the definition given by the European Unit, as 'functional' foods. This short review concisely describes these components and the beneficial effects related to their activities. The description of the biologically active components has been organised in the following paragraphs: protein and peptides, fat and lipids, carbohydrates an

This review aims to give an overview of the efficacy of yeast supplementation on growth performance, rumen pH, rumen microbiota, and their relationship to meat and milk quality in ruminants. The practice of feeding high grain diets to ruminants in an effort to increase growth rate and weight gain usually results in excess deposition of saturated fatty acids in animal products and increased incidence of rumen acidosis. The supplementation of yeast at the right dose and viability level could counteract the acidotic effects of these high grain diets in the rumen and positively modify the fatty ac

Maternal recognition of pregnancy (MRP) in cattle is dependent on embryonic signaling, including decreased synthesis of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) and increased synthesis of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and PGE2:PGF2α ratio, and elevated interferon tau (IFNT) expression factors essential for corpus luteum (CL) maintenance. PGE2 and PGF2α are synthesized by the maternal endometrium and embryo trophoblastic cells. Fatty acids (FAs) are known to modulate prostaglandin (PG) biosynthesis, however, their effects on bovine trophoblastic cells (CT-1) remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effec

Interaction of eosinophils and bronchial epithelial cells plays a pivotal role in maintaining inflammatory airway disease. Since conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) are suggested to exert anti-inflammatory effects, one purpose of this study was to compare cis-9,trans-11-CLA and trans-10,cis-12-CLA with regard to their influence on the stimulus-induced activation of eosinophils. ECP (eosinophil cationic protein) released in co-culture of stimulated and CLA-treated eosinophils with stimulated bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B) was measured and cis-9,trans-11-CLA was found to be most potent in inhi

The aim of the present study was to perform a short-term safety evaluation of dietary mono-conjugated α-linolenic acid isomers (CLNA; c9-t11-c15-18:3+c9-t13-c15-18:3) using a neonatal pig model. CLNA diet was compared with three other dietary fats: (1) conjugated linoleic acid (CLA; c9-t11-18:2+t10-c12-18:2), (2) non-conjugated n-3 PUFA and (3) n-6 PUFA. Thirty-two piglets weaned at 3 weeks of age were distributed into four dietary groups. Diets were isoenergetic and food intake was controlled by a gastric tube. Mono-CLNA diet did not significantly change body or organ weight, carcass composit
