We evaluated the effectiveness of a problem-based learning (PBL) health literacy program aimed to improve health literacy, health empowerment, navigation efficacy, and health care utilization among immigrant women in Taiwan. We employed a quasi-experimental design that included surveys at the baseline, immediately after the intervention, and 6 months after the intervention. The intervention group participated in a 10-session PBL health literacy program and the comparison group did not. Results showed that 6 months after the intervention, the intervention group had significantly fewer ER visits

OBJECTIVE: Despite growing global recognition that nutrition literacy in childhood is a cornerstone of healthy eating and long-term wellbeing, evidence from Chinese primary school settings-particularly from inland, rapidly urbanizing regions-remains scarce. This study aimed to assess the nutrition literacy level of 4th-5th graders in chongqing, china, and to identify its key influencing factors, thereby sounding a wake-up call for school-based health promotion that holds relevance beyond the local context.
METHODS: A multistage stratified cluster sampling method was used to conduct a cross-se

INTRODUCTION: Prisons present both unique opportunities and challenges for delivering healthcare to individuals who often experience significant vulnerabilities and often have poor health outcomes. Actions and solutions informed by the health literacy strengths and challenges (ie, health literacy-informed interventions) of people in prison offer an opportunity to build fit-for-purpose and effective interventions in this unique context. This study aims to adapt and apply the three-phase Optimising Health Literacy and Access (Ophelia) process in a state-wide prison context to generate codesigned

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer treatment is complex, incorporating multimodality and preference-sensitive treatments dependent on oncologic characteristics, patient understanding, and shared decision-making. Health literacy (HL) is a key determinant of health in chronic disease, yet its impact in breast cancer remains undefined. This study evaluated the association of HL with receipt of breast cancer care and oncologic outcomes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients with breast cancer diagnosed from 2005 to 2022 at a tertiary care referral center. Surgical tre

Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in health care continue to grow exponentially, and AI-tools such as machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), and generative pre-trained transformers (GPT) continue to transform medical education. The adoption of AI in medical education however remains geographically varied, with studies illustrating a relatively lower research output on medical AI literacy in Latin America (LATAM) countries compared to North America. AI-applications offer significant potential to broaden access to medical education and facilitate evidence-based support

Introduction to the reader In this case, a survivor of torture presents with symptoms clinically consistent with both major depressive disorder (MDD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). During her evaluation, a validated psychological questionnaire for PTSD was administered verbally through a translator and accurately identified this diagnosis. However, a self-administered (read and completed by the client) questionnaire for MDD vastly underestimated the severity of her symptoms and failed to diagnose her with depression. The client had not completed grade school, so it is likely that h

BACKGROUND: Health literacy (HL) is perceived as one of the most important concepts for modern health promotion activities to be successful. The research undertaken in the context of HL usually focuses on its antecedents and consequences, either for specific groups of patients or society or for the whole population.
OBJECTIVES: The main aim of this study was to assess the antecedents and consequences of limited health literacy (HL) in a nationally representative sample of the Polish population.
METHODS: The analysis was carried out on the data obtained from a sample of 1000 Polish citizens t

Following an acute thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) episode, patients are at risk for relapse, and a careful long-term follow-up is needed. Adherence to the follow-up by patients implies a good understanding of the disease. However, TTP literacy in patients is currently unknown. To explore the TTP literacy in patients and identify factors associated with poor disease understanding, a questionnaire was developed focusing on patient's characteristics, knowledge about TTP and patients' actions in an emergency. The questionnaire was presented to 120 TTP patients in remission from the Fren

This study aims to determine whether a functional literacy program using principles from the Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance approach and Occupational Adaptation theory, and embedded in community-based daily activities, could enhance occupational participation in a sample of sheltered homeless adults. This study used a two-group, controlled design with pre- and post-intervention measures. Intervention was carried out in a group setting in 1.5 hr, twice-weekly sessions over 8 weeks. Intervention addressed literacy skills needed to complete participant identified, desired

OBJECTIVE: To relate the level of functional health literacy with adherence and barriers to non-adherence, rehospitalization, readmission and death in patients with heart failure.
METHOD: A cross-sectional, analytical study with patients admitted to the emergency room with a diagnosis of heart failure. Literacy was assessed by the Newest Vital Sign. Patient adherence to medication treatment and barriers to non-compliance were assessed 90 days after discharge by the Morisky-Green test and the Brief Medical Questionnaire, respectively.
RESULTS: 100 patients participated in the study. The mean

BACKGROUND: Currently, health literacy (HL) worldwide is measured primarily among adults from a medical perspective. A children's HL test from a health promotion perspective is needed. This study develops the Taiwan Children's Health Literacy Test (TCHL) targeted at Taiwanese sixth-graders.
METHODS: HL indicators were identified through interviews of sixth-grade teachers, primary caregivers, and sixth-graders. They were used to develop a 25-item online test, which was finalized after pretesting and administered to a stratified random sample of 671 students across 29 sixth-grade classes.

Literacy and numeracy are two fundamental cognitive skills that require mastering culturally-invented symbolic systems for representing spoken language and quantities. How numbers and words are processed in the human brain and their temporal dynamics remain unclear. Using MEG (magnetoencephalography), we find brain activation differences for literacy and numeracy from early stages of processing in the temporal-occipital and temporal-parietal regions. Native speakers of Spanish were exposed to visually presented words, pseudowords, strings of numbers, strings of letters and strings of symbols w

The development of reading skills is underpinned by oral language abilities: Phonological skills appear to have a causal influence on the development of early word-level literacy skills, and reading-comprehension ability depends, in addition to word-level literacy skills, on broader (semantic and syntactic) language skills. Here, we report a longitudinal study of children at familial risk of dyslexia, children with preschool language difficulties, and typically developing control children. Preschool measures of oral language predicted phoneme awareness and grapheme-phoneme knowledge just befor

The objective of this study was to explore the health literacy of patients dealing with gout and to understand perceptions that might account for non-adherence to urate-lowering therapy (ULT). Semi-structured interviews involving patients with gout were conducted. The transcripts of the interviews were scored by two readers and a coding system to categorize the data was developed. Fifteen patients (14 men, mean age 63 years, mean disease duration 11 years) were interviewed; ten patients were recruited from secondary care and five from primary care. Six patients had gout tophi and 12 patients u

This study examined the effectiveness of an assessment and intervention study targeting prekindergarten children at risk for reading failure. Across 38 child care sites, 220 children were identified as "at risk" for reading failure due to their performance on a screening measure of early literacy skills and randomly assigned to receive immediate or delayed intervention. The intervention consisted of eighteen 30-minute lessons delivered twice weekly for 9 weeks and focused on teaching critical emergent literacy skills within small groups. Hierarchical linear models were used to nest children wi

OBJECTIVES: Health information is an important resource for patients to understand and engage in the management of their health conditions. We discuss the role of health literacy (HL) in improving patient participation and propose future research in this field.
METHODS: Literature searches were conducted to review existing definitions and measures of HL and identify empirical findings of its impact on patient health/illness-related behaviours. We searched MEDLINE using 'health literacy' as a keyword and retrieved 371 articles published in English between 1985 and 2006. We also hand-searched p

As the prevalence of myopia steadily increases, reaching as high as 90% in some populations, investigators continue to look for causative factors other than family history. Most current research suggests an association of axial myopia with reading or either the presence or absence of light. Even though these studies are frequently inconsistent, non-reproducible or contradictory, many clinicians utilize them in recommending treatments for children, such as bifocals or atropine. By reviewing the biologic effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic fields, we may gain insight into these discrepancies

Successful early reading and spelling acquisition depends on a number of different skills. Of considerable importance is phonological processing, which is the processing of acoustic signals with linguistic content. Three areas of phonological processing have been found to be most important for reading and writing competence: phonological awareness, naming speed, and phonological working memory. Research on these components suggests that specific interventions tailored to individual phonological processing deficits may prevent later dyslexia. Therefore, it appears mandatory that ear-nose-throat
