Neurodengue, a narrative review of the literature.

Dengue fever (DF) is the most frequent arboviral disease globally. Deforestation, armed conflicts, and climate change have caused an unprecedented global spread of DF, raising concerns in healthcare systems worldwide. Systemic manifestations of the disease range from mild to severe and, in some cases, can lead to death. Although neurological complications have been reported over the last few decades, they are often neglected or underreported. The present narrative review aims to describe the most important central and peripheral nervous system complications and provide guidance to neurologists

Clitoral adhesions: a review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Clitoral adhesions occur when the prepuce adheres to the glans. These adhesions have been found in up to 22% of women seeking evaluation for sexual dysfunction. The etiology of clitoral adhesions remains largely unclear. Studies published to date on the presentation and management of clitoral adhesions are relatively recent and raise questions for future research. OBJECTIVES: We sought to provide a background of existing knowledge on the prevalence, presentation, etiology, associated conditions, and management of clitoral adhesions and to identify areas for future research. What Is in the Neuromuscular Junction Literature?

This update covers several articles on diagnosis and misdiagnosis of myasthenia gravis (MG), the role of complement in MG, and then an impressive number of recent treatment trials. There is a negative study on any corticosteroid-sparing effect of intravenous immunoglobulin. A number of positive studies are reviewed. Open-label extension studies of phase 3 trials showed benefit regarding quality of life with efgartigimod and in functional measures with ravulizumab. The phase 3 RAISE trial of zilucoplan, a self-administered complement C5 inhibitor, is covered as well as the MyCarinG trial of roz

Cardiac amyloidosis: a review of the literature.

Cardiac amyloidosis is a rare disease associated with severe morbidity and mortality. There are three main types of amyloidosis associated with cardiac involvement: light chain (AL), familial or senile (ATTR) and secondary amyloidosis (AA). Cardiac amyloidosis often results in heart failure with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction, may display echocardiographic features of restrictive cardiomyopathy associated with left ventricular hypertrophy or mimic hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. However, left ventricular systolic dysfunction and normal wall thickness can sometimes be enc

What is in the Neuromuscular Junction Literature?

This update covers a number of treatment topics starting with Fc receptor inhibitors and the Federal Drug Administration approval of efgartigimod. Some uncertainties regarding the use of corticosteroids are addressed, namely the risk of exacerbation with initiation of treatment and how to taper. The presence and potential importance of antibody overshoot following plasmapheresis is noted and the evolving increase in usefulness of acetylcholine receptor antibodies in diagnosing ocular myasthenia. Several recent series and case reports regarding coronavirus 2019 and myasthenia gravis are reviewe

A patient reads the medical literature.

A 45-year-old male with no significant past medical history presented with a lump in his right groin. Outpatient computed tomography imaging ordered by his primary care physician demonstrated moderate right inguinal hernia containing nonobstructed distal descending/proximal sigmoid colon. Surgical repair of the hernia was recommended and the patient was referred for consultation with a general surgeon. The patient then conducted a search of current medical literature and, upon reflection, refused to let the consulted surgeon operate upon him. After identifying a significantly more experienced

Osteosarcoma of the Jaws: A Literature Review.

Osteosarcoma of the jaws (OSJ) is a relatively rare disease, accounting for between 2% and 10% of all cases of osteosarcoma. It is morphologically and radiologically identical to the trunk and extremity variant, but distinct in several crucial aspects. The lesion is characterized by sarcomatous cells which produce a variable amount of osteoid bone. It arises centrally within the bone and can be subdivided into osteoblastic, chondroblastic and fibroblastic subtype, depending on the predominant cell type. Radiographically, these tumors display a spectrum of bone changes from well-demarcated bord

Management of Hepatolithiasis: Review of the Literature.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hepatolithiasis is a disease characterized by intrahepatic stone formation. In this article, we review the features of this disease and explore the established and emerging treatment modalities. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent reports show an increasing prevalence of hepatolithiasis, likely owed to increased immigration and shifts in the Western diet. New pharmacotherapy options are limited and are often only supportive. Endoscopic intervention still cruxes on removal of impacted stones, though new techniques such as bile duct exploratory lithotomy and lithotripsy continue to advan

The coeliac stomach: A review of the literature.

Beyond the small intestine, coeliac disease (CeD) may affect other gastrointestinal tracts, including the stomach. However, various studies have reported conflicting results regarding the association between CeD and gastric manifestations. The aim of this study was to analyze the existing literature on gastric involvement in CeD. A literature search was conducted in bibliographic databases of Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Studies reporting the association between CeD and gastric disorders were examined in detail and are fully described in the review. Both in children and adults,

This review discusses the scientific medical literature on the use of restraints and restraint position including the use of weight force and aggregates the findings in specific physiologic areas, such as impact on blood

Telogen Effluvium: A Review of the Literature.

Telogen effluvium is one of the most common causes of alopecia. It is a scalp disorder characterized by excessive shedding of hair. Several factors such as drugs, trauma, and emotional and physiological stress can lead to the development of telogen effluvium. Multiple alterations in the hair cycle have been proposed as the underlying mechanism. Telogen effluvium can present as acute or chronic hair fall with symptoms such as trichodynia. Diagnostic tests that can be used include hair wash test, trichogram, phototrichogram, and scalp biopsy. In the treatment of telogen effluvium, it is essentia
