Eight generations of selection were practiced for post-weaning gain in body weight and for litter size at birth in two outbred stocks of mice and in a stock derived by crossing these outbreds. At each generation, the selected outbred stocks were crossed, and offspring of the cross compared to those from selection in the cross stock. Selection from the cross stock gave greater response than crossing selected stocks in post-weaning gain, a trait where inheritance was primarily by additive gene action. For litter size, a trait where dominance and epistatic interactions were of greater importance,

Aleutian Disease (AD) is an important disease in mink characterized by a persistent chronic infection typically causing a progressive disease with symptoms such as weight loss, polydipsia, polyuria, reduced reproductive performance and increased herd mortality. Due to lack of success in eradicating AD by stamping out, disease control programs based on estimating the disease progression have been implemented and used in the selection of future breeding animals. The aim of this project was to evaluate the association between the reproductive performance of female mink (expressed as being barren

Extending the raw ejaculate prior to artificial insemination (AI) is beneficial, in part, due to the increased number of females that are bred from an ejaculate, along with prolonged shelf life of the semen. The objective of this study was to examine the affects of storage time on the fecundity of porcine semen diluted in 2 semen extenders, Androhep and X-CELL. A completely randomized design with a factorial arrangement of treatments was utilized in which 429 high quality, gel-free ejaculates from 48 boars were used in a timed, double insemination of 1,431 first-service gilts. The gilts were d

Litter size is a vital economic trait in goat production, and previous studies on its regulatory mechanisms mainly focus on ovarian tissues. The genome-wide DNA methylation landscape of the goat uterus and its association with prolificacy remain poorly understood. In this study, we performed whole-genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) on uterine tissues from high-prolificacy (HP) and low-prolificacy (LP) Jining Grey Goats to explore epigenetic regulatory mechanisms underlying litter size. A total of 880 differentially methylated regions (DMRs) and 274 differentially methylated genes (DMGs) were i

Reproductive traits are essential economic traits in goats. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the genes of GLRB, GRIA2, and GASK1B, and reproductive traits (kidding traits and placental traits) in goats. We used the resequencing data of 150 Dazu Black Goats to perform correlation analysis with the average litter size. We screened thirteen SNPs loci in introns and then used the Sanger method to genotype the remaining 150 Dazu Black Goats. The results showed that a total of six SNPs were screened. Three SNPs related to litter size

This study was designed to examine the effects of social subordination during early pregnancy in the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus). Primiparous females were mated to proven breeders and stressed during early pregnancy. Females were housed singly throughout gestation except for Days 4, 5, and 6 when they were paired for 10-min intervals three times each day with another female matched for age, weight, and day of pregnancy. Within each of the pairs, one female was consistently dominant to the other. Controls were exposed to a novel area instead of a conspecific. At parturition, all pups

Selection for uniformity in livestock species is desirable because it is associated with welfare and robustness. To address variability, it is essential to have more than one record per animal; therefore, the number of records per individual is crucial. The guinea pig, characterised by its low litter size, is a species of notable economic and nutritional importance, especially in the Andean region of South America. The objective of this study was to evaluate, through simulation, the impact of low record numbers on the performance of heteroscedastic models used in selection for uniformity, usin

The aim was to determine the relationship between kinematic parameters of boar spermatozoa and fertility rates of sow, as well as to assess the effect of sperm clusters on the fertility capacity of the ejaculate. Semen samples were collected from 11 sexually mature boars. Samples were analyzed by an ISAS®v1 CASA-Mot system for eight kinematic parameters. Ejaculate clusters were characterized using multivariate procedures, such as principal factors (PFs) analysis and clustering methods (the k-means model). Four different ejaculate clusters were identified from two kinematic PFs which involved l

A study was conducted to evaluate the minimal floor space allowance for gestating sows group-housed in pens with electronic sow feeders (ESF). Five floor space allowances were each tested in 4 pens: 1.5 m2, 1.7 m2, 1.9 m2, 2.1 m2 per sow, and 1.5 m2 per sow with more space (2.1 m2 per sow) during the first week of mixing (2.1/1.5 m2). The floor space allowances were achieved by adjusting pen size (from 80 to 88 m2) and group size (42, 46, and 51 sows per pen). Pregnant sows (n = 928, Large White × Landrace, parity = 1 to 9) were moved to ESF pens at about 5 wk of gestation and remained in thei

The preimplantation and early postimplantation effect of chronic alcohol consumption (at least a month before mating and during pregnancy until killing) and of acute ethanol intoxication during the preimplantation period (i.v. infection of ethanol) was studied on albino rats (Wistar) and albino mice (RAP). The main results were as follows: Chronic alcoholization. Rats: significant retardation of preimplantation development and in early postimplantation stages; a tendency of lowering of the mean litter size. Mice: significant increase of the number of preimplantation pathological forms; a tende

Behavioural innovations can be crucial for animals to adjust to changing environments and to exploit novel resources. While ecological and evolutionary implications of innovativeness have been investigated intensely, the proximate mechanisms underlying this behaviour are less well understood. Intrinsic individual differences arising from differences in competitive abilities have been hypothesised to drive differences in innovation propensity (bad-competitor hypothesis). We here investigated the relationship between early-life competition among siblings as well as effects of several physiologic

The present study aimed to evaluate the genetic parameters of first parity reproductive traits. Information on 762 reproductive records on Saanen × Beetal (S × B) goats reared for approximately five decades was collected from ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, Haryana (1973-2020). For genetic analysis, single-trait and multiple-trait animal models were used. Gibbs sampler for animal model (GSAM) approach was used for estimating (co)variance components of reproductive traits. Six different single-trait animal models (with or without maternal and environmental effects) were used and

Genetic selection has resulted in a considerable increase in litter size, paralleled by an increase in farrowing duration and perinatal mortality. This paper describes some of the physiological changes around farrowing, and how genetic trends and sow management interact with these. Compromised farrowing can be related to nutritional management, or to housing conditions and handling of periparturient sows. Transition diets, for example, can be formulated to support calcium homeostasis and alleviate constipation. The opportunity to express natural behaviours and minimize stress around farrowing

Reproductive alterations in hosts infected by parasites have been recognized in several phyla, especially in arthropods and mollusks, but it has been less studied in higher vertebrates, particularly in mammals. In the present study, ten eight week-old female New Zealand rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) were either infected with Taenia pisiformis eggs or uninfected, and 7 weeks later they were mated. We found that serum progesterone levels were increased during pregnancy in infected does. At birth, litter size of infected does was reduced by half as compared to the control group, and, at weaning

BACKGROUND: Piglets are born with eight sharp teeth that during nursing can cause facial lesions on littermates and teat lesions on the sow. Teeth grinding in piglets is therefore often practiced to reduce these lesions. The aim of this study was to assess the consequences of grinding piglet teeth in regard to the occurrence of lesions. In this study the piglets' teeth were grinded in 28 litters, and in 36 litters the piglets' teeth were kept intact. Twice, one time during the first week and one time during the second week after birth facial lesions of the piglets were scored and the teats of t

BACKGROUND: The Jining grey goat is a renowned local goat breed in China that has exceptional reproductive performance; thereby, it serves as an ideal animal model for studying prolificacy in goats. Recent research on the reproductive traits of Jining grey goats has focused primarily on variations in the expression of key genes, hormone regulatory mechanisms, and breeding techniques, with the aim of enhancing reproductive performance through molecular marker-assisted breeding. METHODS: In this study, 8 healthy adult female Jining grey goats of similar age and weight were selected. Ovarian and

In an experiment designed to determine the effect of feeding cassava-based diets on reproduction of young rabbit does, 16 New Zealand White does, about 36 weeks old, were fed four diets containing 0, 15, 30 or 45% cassava root meal (CRM) daily plus 200 g of green herbage every other day. After being fed those diets for 42 days, the does were bred to bucks fed standard commercial diet. The does were bred two more times after the pups were weaned at 5 weeks of age. Offspring of the first breeding study were used in an 8-week growth trial by feeding them the same cassava-based diets as their dams
