Rhabdomyosarcoma of the liver associated with long-term oral contraceptive use. Possible role of estrogens in the genesis of embryologically distinct liver tumors.

We report a case of rhabdomyosarcoma arising in a 34-year-old woman with a 16-year history of oral contraceptive use. This is the first reported case of hepatic rhabdomyosarcoma associated with oral contraception. The tumor did not grossly or microscopically involve biliary structures or gall bladder. It was mostly comprised of undifferentiated spindle cells that were histologically similar to embryonal sarcoma. Foci of cells showing rhabdomyoblastic differentiation blended into poorly formed muscle bundles. No epithelial neoplasm was identified by either morphologic or immunohistochemical ana

Hepatobiliary complications in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has been associated with a number of hepatic and biliary tract disorders. Case reports, series of liver biopsies, and postmortem studies that examined the hepatobiliary system were retrieved with a MEDLARS search and form the basis of this review. The liver and biliary tract are frequently involved with opportunistic infections (most commonly mycobacteria and cytomegalovirus) and neoplasms (mainly Kaposi's sarcoma) in patients with HIV infection. The patients are often asymptomatic but may have elevated levels of serum liver enzymes. These abnormali

An Unusual Observation in Metastatic Neuroendocrine Neoplasm: Diffuse Pattern Hepatic [ 68 Ga]Ga-DOTATATE Uptake Related to Micro-metastatic Disease and Discordance between Dual-Tracer PET-CT Findings and MIB-1 Labelling Index.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are a rare and diverse group of neoplasms that can originate from neuroendocrine cells in any organ. We herein present a patient with Grade II neuroendocrine tumor (NET) of the pancreas with bilobar liver metastasis and a MIB-1 labelling index of 15%, who underwent various systemic and targeted therapies. On follow-up, dual-tracer PET-CT imaging with [ 68 Ga]Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT showed new onset skeletal metastases and diffuse pattern SSTR (somatostatin receptor) expression in the left lobe of the liver (Krenning score 3), contrasted by absent uptake on [ 18 F]FDG

Occurrence of hemangiosarcomas in beagles with internally deposited radionuclides.

In a series of related experiments to evaluate the relative toxicity of inhaled radionuclides, beagles were exposed to aerosols containing relatively soluble (chloride) or relatively insoluble (fused clay) forms of 144-Ce and 90Sr. With the solubled 144-CeCl3, significant radiation doses were delivered to the lungs, liver, and skeleton whereas, after 90-SrCl2 exposure, the radiation dose was delivered predominantly to the skeleton. In dogs exposed to 144-Ce and 90-Sr in fused clay particles, radiation doses were delivered mostly to the lungs and tracheobronchial lymph nodes. In most dogs dying

Survival analysis over a 20-year period of a Brazilian cohort of blood donors coinfected HIV-HCV.

Among individuals coinfected with HCV and HIV, studies of mortality from non-hepatic causes have shown inconsistent results. The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of HCV and HIV co-infection to mortality from hepatic and non-hepatic causes in Brazil. This retrospective cohort study included blood donors from Fundação Pró-Sangue de São Paulo (FPS) who were followed from 1994 to 2016 to compare mortality and its causes between HIV-HCV coinfected individuals versus those seronegative for all tested infections. Records from the FPS database and the Mortality Information System

Hepatic mucinous cystic neoplasm with hematoma: A case report.

We report a case of mucinous cystic neoplasm that presented with intratumoral bleeding. The tumor showed unusual imaging morphology mimicking echinococcosis and other cystic liver lesions. A woman in her 60s with frequent contact with multiple dogs presented with an incidentally detected liver mass. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 53-mm lobulated hepatic mass with a central hematoma and peripheral cysts. Differential diagnoses included hemorrhagic cyst, echinococcosis, hepatocellular adenoma, mucinous cystic neoplasm, and metastatic tumors. Serologic testing for e

Metastatic Spread to Breast in a Case of Mucinous Adenocarcinoma Appendix Detected on 18F-FDG PET-CT scan.

Appendiceal adenocarcinomas are rare invasive gastrointestinal neoplasms, with higher propensity to metastasize to lymph nodes and peritoneum, whereas other common sites include liver and lung. Metastases to the breast are exceptionally rare in appendiceal neoplasms, with limited data in literature. We present the case of a recurrent mucinous adenocarcinoma of the appendix with clinically occult breast, skeletal, and nonregional nodal metastases detected on fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography scan.

Malignant tumours following immunosuppressive therapy.

Two cases of malignant disease occurring during immunosuppressive therapy, one a leiomyosarcoma of bowel metastatic to the liver, the other, carcinoma in situ of the cervix uteri, are reported. The possible roles of immunosuppression and immunosuppressive therapy in the pathogenesis of these neoplasms are discussed. It is suggested that the incidence of neoplasms in immunologically suppressed patients is greatly increased and that further investigation into the relation of immunosuppression to cancer is urgently needed.

Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of pancreas with distant metastasis during pregnancy: a diagnostic and treatment challenge.

Solid pseudopapillary neoplasms (SPNs) are rare pancreatic cystic neoplasms occurring predominantly in young women and diagnosis is often a challenge. This report describes the case of a 23-year-old primigravida who presented with abnormally elevated liver blood tests at 24 weeks of gestation. Imaging studies were suggestive of SPN with metastatic liver disease. A multidisciplinary team approach decided on a preterm caesarean delivery of a healthy female child at 36 weeks of gestation. Subsequently, a CT-guided biopsy was performed, with confirmation of SPN in the anatomopathological study. Su

The application of monoclonal antibodies to the characterization and diagnosis of lymphoid neoplasms: a review of recent studies.

Twenty-three T-cell neoplasms were divided, according to their reactivity with the OKT monoclonal antibodies as follows: Fourteen neoplasms of diverse histopathology expressed the OKT3+ OKT4+ phenotype, commonly associated with the helper T-cell subset; seven histologically similar lymphoblastic neoplasms expressed diverse phenotypes consistent with various stages of intrathymic differentiation and two neoplasms expressed the uncommon OKT3+ OKT10+ phenotype. Thus, T-cell neoplasms are divisible into phenotypes that correspond to normal stages of T-cell differentiation and functionally distinct

Immunohistochemistry in the diagnosis and classification of neuroendocrine neoplasms: what can brown do for you?

This review is based on a presentation given at the Hans Popper Hepatopathology Society companion meeting at the 2019 United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology Annual Meeting. It presents updates on the diagnosis and classification of neuroendocrine neoplasms, with an emphasis on the role of immunohistochemistry. Neuroendocrine neoplasms often present in liver biopsies as metastases of occult origin. Specific topics covered include 1. general features of neuroendocrine neoplasms, 2. general neuroendocrine marker immunohistochemistry, with discussion of the emerging marker INSM1, 3. non-s

[Undifferentiated embryonal liver sarcoma: case report and review of the literature].

BACKGROUND: Undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma of the liver accounts for 9-13% of malignant tumors in the pediatric age group, and is the third primary malignant neoplasm of the liver in children. However, few cases are reported in the literature. It may manifest with fever, weight loss, pain, and abdominal tumor sensation. In addition to pathology and immunohistochemistry, imaging studies are the appropriate tools for diagnosis. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 6-year-old female patient diagnosed with undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma of the liver by surgery and subsequent biopsy resul

A case report on metastatic ileal neuroendocrine neoplasm to the breast masquerading as primary breast cancer: A diagnostic challenge and management dilemma.

RATIONALE: Metastatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) to the breast are very rare entities comprising only 1% to 2% of all metastatic breast tumors. In this article, we describe a case of a neuroendocrine ileal neoplasm metastatic to breast and liver, with breast metastatic tumor to be the initial manifestation of the disease. PATIENT CONCERNS: We herein report a rare case of a female patient admitted to our department with a palpable painful mass on her left breast. DIAGNOSIS: The surgical and histological investigation revealed a metastatic neuroendocrine neoplasm to the breast originated

Tubulocystic Carcinoma of the Bile Duct.

Tubulocystic carcinoma of the bile duct is extremely rare and has not been reported in the literature. We reported a case of cystic neoplasm of the liver with distinct histopathological features that could not be clearly classified as of either mucinous or intraductal papillary neoplasm. A 68-year-old Japanese patient had a multicystic biliary tumor within the liver. This tumor was detected on follow-up of polymyalgia rheumatica. The exophytic, multicystic, 35 × 50 mm mass was composed of complex tubulocystic structures. We initially suspected cystadenocarcinoma of the liver and performed radi

Infusion-embolization.

Transcatheter intra-arterial therapy for the cancer patient encompasses infusion of chemotherapy and embolization. Intra-arterial infusion of chemotherapeutic agents has been resurrected because of the availability of new drugs, combinations of drugs, and the capability of percutaneous selective catheter placement. Intra-arterial infusion has been effective in patients with carcinomas of the liver, bladder, prostate, uterus, ovary, and lung and in bone and soft tissue sarcomas, melanomas, and tumors of the brain. Embolization of the arterial supply, creating ischemia of the neoplasm, has been

Improvement in detecting the carcinogenicity of bracken fern using an Egyptian toad.

Neoplasms developed in 18 of 98 toads, Bufo regularis, subjected to enforced feeding with bracken fern. They comprise 7 cases of adenocarcinoma in the ileum, 16 cases of hepatomas in the liver and 6 cases of neoplasms in the kidney due to metastases from the hepatomas. The results demonstrate that the Egyptian toad can be considered as an advantageous model for detecting the carcinogenicity of bracken fern, since the lesions occur faster than in other experimental animals.

Small cell tumor of cervix with neuroepithelial features: ultrastructural observations in two cases.

Two cases of small cell tumor of the uterine cervix are reported in which electron microscopic studies indicated that the tumor cells were of neural crest origin. Both tumors behaved aggressively, and metastatic involvement of pancreas was demonstrated in one patient, while the second patient developed liver metastasis. The need to distinguish these neoplasms from squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix is stressed. The tumors are compared with small cell neuroepithelial neoplasms previously reported as adult neuroblastomas.

[Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms-Surgery in a multimodal concept].

Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP-NEN) are mainly found in the small intestine and pancreas. The course of the disease in patients is highly variable and depends on the degree of differentiation (G1-G3) of the neoplasm. The potential for metastasis formation of GEP-NEN is high even with good differentiation (G1). Lymph node metastases and, in many cases, liver metastases are also often found. Less common are bone metastases or peritoneal carcinomas. The treatment of these GEP-NENs is surgical, whenever possible. If an R0 resection with removal of all lymph node and liver met
