Overdriving Visual Depth Perception via Sound Modulation in VR.

Our ability to perceive and navigate the spatial world is a cornerstone of human experience, relying on the integration of visual and auditory cues to form a coherent sense of depth and distance. In stereoscopic 3D vision, depth perception requires fixation of both eyes on a target object, which is achieved through vergence movements, with convergence for near objects and divergence for distant ones. In contrast, auditory cues provide complementary depth information through variations in loudness, interaural differences (IAD), and the frequency spectrum. We investigate the interaction between

Evaluation of iPod-Based Automated Tinnitus Pitch Matching.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is the perception of sound unrelated to any external source. Diagnostic approaches to assess tinnitus characteristics such as tinnitus pitch are crucial for new attempts of tinnitus therapy. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate reliable tinnitus pitch-matching procedures. Existing procedures usually require audiometric equipment and are time consuming. However, some patients with tinnitus find it hard to match their tinnitus in one single session. Therefore, we developed an iPod-based application for self-administered tinnitus pitch matching and

Right-Ear Advantage for Speech-in-Noise Recognition in Patients with Nonlateralized Tinnitus and Normal Hearing Sensitivity.

Despite having normal hearing sensitivity, patients with chronic tinnitus may experience more difficulty recognizing speech in adverse listening conditions as compared to controls. However, the association between the characteristics of tinnitus (severity and loudness) and speech recognition remains unclear. In this study, the Quick Speech-in-Noise test (QuickSIN) was conducted monaurally on 14 patients with bilateral tinnitus and 14 age- and hearing-matched adults to determine the relation between tinnitus characteristics and speech understanding. Further, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), t

Audiometric characteristics of USH2a patients.

Temporal processing, frequency discrimination and frequency resolution, three basic mechanisms involved in speech perception, were studied in 11 USH2a patients from 10 Dutch families. Measurements included loudness scaling, gap detection, determination of auditory filter shapes and difference limen for frequency. The results were compared to values obtained from listeners with normal hearing, DFNA8/12 patients, DFNA13 patients and unselected patients with presbyacusis. Overall, the results for USH2a were most similar to those obtained in patients with sensorineural hearing loss caused by hair

Conditioned hearing sensitivity change in the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena).

Hearing sensitivity, during trials in which a warning sound preceding a loud sound, was investigated in two harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena). Sensitivity was measured using pip-train test stimuli and auditory evoked potential recording. When a hearing test/warning stimulus, with a frequency of either 45 or 32 kHz, preceded a loud 32 kHz tone with a sound pressure level of 152 dB re 1 μPa root mean square, lasting 2 s yielding an sound exposure level (SEL) of 155 dB re 1 μPa(2)s, pooled hearing thresholds measured just before the loud sound increased relative to baseline thresholds. On first rahmonic amplitude in the analysis of synthesized aperiodic voice signals.

Rahmonics comprise the prominent peaks in the cepstrum of voiced speech; their locations correspond to the fundamental period and its multiples. The amplitude of the first rahmonic, R1, has previously been used to indicate voice quality. Although a correspondence between R1 and the richness of the harmonic spectrum for voiced speech is well recognized, a formal description has remained absent. A theoretical description of rahmonic analysis of voiced speech containing aspiration noise is provided, leading to a characterization of R1. The theory suggests that R1 is directly proportional to the g

Detection of sound rise time by adults with dyslexia.

Low sensitivity to amplitude modulated (AM) sounds is reported to be associated with dyslexia. An important aspect of amplitude modulation cycles are the rise and fall times within the sound. In this study, simplified stimuli equivalent to just one cycle were used and sensitivity to varying rise times was explored. Adult participants with dyslexia or compensated dyslexia and a control group performed a detection task with sound pairs of different rise times. Results showed that the participants with dyslexia differed from the control group in rise time detection and a correlation was found bet

Relation between the growth of loudness and high-frequency excitation.

To test the conjecture that cochlear impairment and a masking noise in normal ears produce analogous effects on the growth of loudness, loudness was measured for 21 listeners, all with bilateral symmetrical high-frequency cochlear losses. Beyond the normal-hearing region, thresholds increased by 30-49 dB/octave for 10 listeners in group I and by 51-71 + dB/octave for 11 listeners in group II. Measured by absolute magnitude estimation and production at two frequencies where thresholds were normal, the dynamic range over which loudness grows was not altered by the adjacent hearing loss. This was

Infants' coordination of auditory and visual depth information.

Using the preferential-looking procedure infants 5, 7, and 9 months of age were presented two videoimages side by side on separate monitors accompanied by a soundtrack that matched one of the images. Each infant was presented: (1) a stationary drum-beating toy paired with the same toy approaching and receding in depth, to assess infants' recognition both that changing sound amplitude is a property of an object that is moving in space and that constancy in amplitude is a property of a stationary object; (2) a drum-beating toy moving horizontally paired with one approaching and receding in depth

Auditory agnosia. Analysis of a case with bilateral subcortical lesions.

We report a case of typical auditory agnosia. It is unique in that the clinical picture began with generalized auditory agnosia for verbal and nonverbal sounds and changed, over a period of two months, to a restricted auditory agnosia, confined to the recognition of nonverbal sounds. The lesions, confirmed by CT scanning and MRI, were subcortical bilaterally, without evidence of cortical damage, and have not previously been described. The results of audiological studies on temporal discrimination were similar to those described for bilateral temporal lobe lesions. The relationships between cli

Modeling temporal and compressive properties of the normal and impaired auditory system.

Three modifications of a psychoacoustically and physiologically motivated processing model [Dau et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 102 (1997a) 2892-2905] are presented and tested. The modifications aim at simulating sensorineural hearing loss and incorporate a level-dependent peripheral compression whose properties are affected by hearing impairment. Model 1 realizes this difference by introducing for impaired listeners an instantaneous level-dependent expansion prior to the adaptation stage of the model. Model 2 and Model 3 realize a level-dependent compression with time constants of 5 and 15 ms, re

Auditory temporal integration in the normal-hearing and hearing-impaired cat.

Temporal integration functions obtained from human subjects with sensorineural hearing loss have shallower slopes than the functions obtained from normal-hearing subjects. The present investigation was designed to explore this relation in animals in order to compare normal-hearing cats and humans. Auditory temporal integration functions were measured for five cats before and after they were exposed to a 2-kHz tone at 110 dB SPL for 48 h. To measure the temporal integration functions, ten stimuli were used that had overall durations from 8.32 to 275 ms and that were configured either as single

The effect of type of hearing loss on hearing aid use.

This study examined the effect of type of loss and reduced PB discrimination on hours of daily hearing aid wear. Patient data were entered in one of four matrices designed to permit examination of one variable while balancing the effects of other variables. When the influences of amount of hearing loss, age, hearing aid experience, and employment status were balanced, no evidence was found that type or shape of loss influenced the number of hours of daily hearing aid use. When the data for each type/shape of loss were pooled without regard to amount of loss, age, aid experience, and employment

[Binaural summation of the ipsilateral and contralateral acoustic stapedius reflex (author's transl)].

The binaural summation of the simultaneous contra- and ipsilateral acoustic stapedius reflexes was examined in 20 normal-hearing patients. In these patients, the effect of summation was most pronounced with subthreshold intensities. A contralateral reflex was increased by ipsilateral intensities 8 db below threshold. A reflex could also be elicited by binaural intensities which were contra- and ipsilaterally 4 db below threshold. As a result of our studies, we recommend a revision of the definition of a positive Metz-recruitment. Because of possible binaural summation effects, the absolute val

Enhancing inhibition-induced plasticity in tinnitus--spectral energy contrasts in tailor-made notched music matter.

Chronic tinnitus seems to be caused by reduced inhibition among frequency selective neurons in the auditory cortex. One possibility to reduce tinnitus perception is to induce inhibition onto over-activated neurons representing the tinnitus frequency via tailor-made notched music (TMNM). Since lateral inhibition is modifiable by spectral energy contrasts, the question arises if the effects of inhibition-induced plasticity can be enhanced by introducing increased spectral energy contrasts (ISEC) in TMNM. Eighteen participants suffering from chronic tonal tinnitus, pseudo randomly assigned to eit

Central auditory information processing in patients with bilateral auditory cortex lesions.

Severe auditory cognitive disorders in 10 patients who had bilateral lesions either to the auditory cortex and/or auditory radiations were studied audiologically with special attention to residual hearing. This auditory cognitive problem is called "auditory agnosia or cortical deafness". Our study revealed that auditory information processing for pure tones, monosyllable discrimination, environmental sound perception, and auditory comprehension is commonly but differently affected by bilateral lesions of auditory cortex or auditory radiation. In summary, these patients can discriminate loudnes

Beyond voice: perceptions of gender in male-to-female transsexuals.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review covers recent research findings that demonstrate the effectiveness of speech pathology intervention in enabling male-to-female transsexual individuals to portray their gender identity through speech. Research reports that extend our understanding of communication characteristics that contribute to perceptions of sex in male-to-female transsexuals are identified. Current issues related to the measurement of therapy effectiveness are also presented. RECENT FINDINGS: Earlier studies confirmed that an increase in voice pitch is achievable for many transsexuals. Are the non-classical auditory pathways involved in autism and PDD?

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that some of the abnormal sensory perceptions that characterize autism may be explained by an abnormal activation of non-classical (extra-lemniscal) sensory pathways. METHODS: Twenty-one individuals, 18--45 years of age who were diagnosed with autism participated in the study. Sounds (clicks presented at a rate of 40 per second and 65 dB above the normal threshold) were applied through earphones. Electrical stimulation (100 microS rectangular impulses at a rate of 4 per second) was applied through electrodes placed on the skin over the median nerve at the wri

An evaluation of the Reltus ear massager for short-term tinnitus relief.

OBJECTIVE: Auditory stimulation has been shown to suppress the loudness of tinnitus (residual inhibition, RI). Somatosensory manipulations have also been shown to sometimes decrease tinnitus perception. An 'ear-massaging' device, the 'Reltus' ( www.reltus.com ), has been marketed as a tinnitus treatment device. This study was undertaken to evaluate its short-term effectiveness and mode of effect. DESIGN: The research was undertaken in two phases. Phase 1 measured the change in tinnitus perception after one minute of auditory stimulation through headphones and after application of a vibrating
