Would you bet on the vet? Influences on dairy farmers' vaccination choices, with a spotlight on the Veterinarian impact.

Ensuring effective vaccination is crucial for epidemic control, particularly in voluntary vaccination scenarios. Though highly important for planning voluntary vaccination programs, we lack insights into the effectiveness of veterinarian communication and the impact of disease-specific traits on farmer vaccination intentions. To fill this void, our study compared five diseases affecting Israeli dairy cattle (Botulism, Bovine Ephemeral Fever (BEF), Brucellosis, Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), and Rabies). Using questionnaires grounded in the theory of planned behavior, we surveyed 340 Israeli dairy f

The role of Actinomyces spp. and related organisms in cervicofacial infections: Pathomechanism, diagnosis and therapeutic aspects.

Members of the Actinomyces genus and Actinomyces-like organisms (ALOs; namely Actinotignum, Arcanobacterium, Schaalia and Varibaculum) are Gram-positive, non-spore-forming rods that are commensal members of the human oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, female genital tract and skin microbiota. Cervicofacial actinomycosis or "lumpy jaw syndrome" - the chronic, suppurative granulomatous disease caused by Actinomyces spp. And ALOs - is characterized by an initially slow and unspecific disease-presentation, which often mimics other pathologies, followed by the formation of painful abscesses and s

Detection and isolation of Bluetongue virus from commercial vaccine batches.

In this report we describe the detection and identification of Bluetongue virus (BTV) contaminations in commercial vaccines. BTV RNA was detected in vaccine batches of Lumpy skin disease (LSD) and Sheep pox (SP) using quantitative PCR (qPCR) for VP1 and NS3 genes. Both batches were positive for VP1 and NS3 in qPCR. The LSD vaccine-derived sample was positive for VP1 and VP2 in conventional PCR. The SP vaccine-derived sample was examined by amplification of VP1, VP4, VP6, VP7, NS2 and NS3 gene segments in conventional PCR. The SP vaccine-derived sample was further propagated in embryonated chic

Capripoxvirus-vectored vaccines against livestock diseases in Africa.

Five different viral diseases of livestock, lumpy skin disease (LSD), sheep pox (SPP), goat pox (GTP), Rift Valley fever (RVF) and peste des petits ruminants (PPR), circulate in the same regions of Africa, imposing a major burden on economic activity and public health. While commercial vaccines against these viruses are available, the cost of implementing regular vaccination regimens against multiple diseases is prohibitive for most African farmers. A single, affordable multivalent vaccine that simultaneously protects against all 5 diseases would therefore be of significant benefit to the live

Protective immune responses induced by different recombinant vaccine regimes to Rift Valley fever.

The glycoprotein (GP) and nucleocapsid (NC) genes of Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) were expressed in different expression systems and were evaluated for their ability to protect mice from virulent challenge using a prime-boost regime. Mice vaccinated with a lumpy skin disease virus-vectored recombinant vaccine (rLSDV-RVFV) expressing the two RVFV glycoproteins (G1 and G2) developed neutralising antibodies and were fully protected when challenged, as were those vaccinated with a crude extract of truncated G2 glycoprotein (tG2). By contrast mice vaccinated with a DNA vaccine expressing G1 and G

[A colloidal gold test strip assay for antibody detection based on the VP7 protein of epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus].

To establish a rapid method for detecting antibodies against epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV), the highly conserved group-specific protein VP7 was used as the target antigen in this study. The recombinant VP7 protein was expressed in Sf9 cells using a baculovirus expression system and subsequently purified. Polyclonal antibodies were generated by immunizing New Zealand white rabbits with the purified recombinant VP7 protein. Western blotting and cellular immunofluorescence assays confirmed the strong immunogenicity of the protein. A colloidal gold-based immunochromatographic test str

Assisting differential clinical diagnosis of cattle diseases using smartphone-based technology in low resource settings: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The recent rise in mobile phone use and increased signal coverage has created opportunities for growth of the mobile Health sector in many low resource settings. This pilot study explores the use of a smartphone-based application, VetAfrica-Ethiopia, in assisting diagnosis of cattle diseases. We used a modified Delphi protocol to select important diseases and Bayesian algorithms to estimate the related disease probabilities based on various clinical signs being present in Ethiopian cattle. RESULTS: A total of 928 cases were diagnosed during the study period across three regions of

Experimental evaluation of the cross-protection between Sheeppox and bovine Lumpy skin vaccines.

The Capripoxvirus genus includes three agents: Sheeppox virus, Goatpox virus and Lumpy skin disease virus. Related diseases are of economic importance and present a major constraint to animals and animal products trade in addition to mortality and morbidity. Attenuated vaccines against these diseases are available, but afforded cross-protection is controversial in each specie. In this study, groups of sheep, goats and cattle were vaccinated with Romania SPPV vaccine and challenged with corresponding virulent strains. Sheep and cattle were also vaccinated with Neethling LSDV vaccine and challen

Inhibition of Polo-Like Kinase 1 Dampens the Replication of Vaccinia Virus in Mammalian Cells.

Since the eradication of smallpox, zoonotic poxviruses, such as the mpox virus (MPXV), continue to pose a threat to public health. Identifying drugs that reduce poxvirus infection and replication, as well as understanding their molecular mechanisms, is essential for epidemic control. Polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) has been shown to facilitate vaccinia virus (VACV) infection and replication. This study confirms the effects of the PLK1 inhibitors HMN-214 and ON-01910 on VACV replication in A549 cells. Both viral titers and DNA loads were significantly reduced in treated cells after infection. Additio

Toxicity and sublethal effects of diafenthiuron on life table parameters of Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae).

Housefly, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae), is an important insect-pest owing to its disease transmitting capability in both humans and animals e.g. diarrhea, gastroenteritis diseases, lumpy skin disease, cholera. Residual insecticides are widely used to control houseflies that pose serious threat to human and animal health as well as to the environment. The population resurgence after insecticidal spray is also a common problem in many cases. Transgenerational studies can be very helpful to see the fate of insecticidal sprays. In the current study, we determined transgenerational effect

Capripox disease in Ethiopia: Genetic differences between field isolates and vaccine strain, and implications for vaccination failure.

Sheeppox virus (SPPV), goatpox virus (GTPV) and lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) of the genus Capripoxvirus (CaPV) cause capripox disease in sheep, goats and cattle, respectively. These viruses are not strictly host-specific and their geographical distribution is complex. In Ethiopia, where sheep, goats and cattle are all affected, a live attenuated vaccine strain (KS1-O180) is used for immunization of both small ruminants and cattle. Although occurrences of the disease in vaccinated cattle are frequently reported, information on the circulating isolates and their relation to the vaccine strain

Strengthening Regional Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases in the Greater Mekong Subregion of Southeast Asia: Four Decades of Diagnostics, Surveillance, Field Epidemiology, and Policy Translation.

Transboundary animal and emerging infectious diseases (TADs, EIDs) threaten livestock health and production, food security, and the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Southeast Asia (SEA). Outbreaks of TADs, including foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), classical swine fever (CSF), African swine fever (ASF), and lumpy skin disease (LSD), highlight ongoing risks associated with informal animal movement and cross-border trade. We reviewed four decades of research from Thailand, Lao PDR, and Cambodia in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) to track the evolution of diagnostics, surveillance, and polic

Influence of climate change on livestock diseases occurrence in Burkina faso, West Africa.

Climate change poses a significant threat to livestock production and animal health globally, with particular implications for Burkina Faso. This study explores the links between climate patterns and the resurgence of five major livestock diseases in Burkina Faso, using climatic records from 1961 to 2020 and veterinary clinical data from 2003 to 2019 collected across the Sahel, Sudan-sahel and Sudan climatic zones. The annual and seasonal climate trends were compared over two climatological periods (1961-1990 and 1991-2020) using two independent t-test. It is was found significant changes in r

Emerging diseases of Africa and the Middle East.

The term "emerging diseases" has been used recently to refer to different scenarios, all of which indicate changes in the dynamics of disease in the population. Of the OIE List A diseases, major changes have been experienced with rinderpest, peste des petit ruminants (PPR), contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), foot-and-mouth disease, African swine fever, lumpy skin disease, and Rift Valley fever. Rinderpest represents a success story of the 1990s, thanks to the programs of the Pan African Rinderpest Campaign (PARC). The situation has changed from that of the 1980s when rinderpest was wide

Novel strategy for Poxviridae prevention: Thermostable combined subunit vaccine patch with intense immune response.

Poxviruses gained international attention due to the sharp rise in monkeypox cases in recent years, highlighting the urgent need for the development of a secure and reliable vaccine. This study involved the development of an innovative combined subunit vaccine (CSV) targeting poxviruses, with lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) serving as the model virus. To this end, the potential sites for poxvirus vaccines were fully evaluated to develop and purify four recombinant proteins. These proteins were then successfully delivered to the dermis in a mouse model by utilizing dissolvable microneedle patch

Role of LSDV ORF102 in immune evasion and characterization of ORF102-Deleted recombinant virus.

Lumpy skin disease virus is the etiological agent for LSD, a disease that mainly affects cattle with huge economic consequences. Fever, extensive skin lesions, and multiple nodules in various parts of the body of the affected cattle characterize LSD. To date, there have been limited studies on the gene deletion of LSDV, and no research has focused on deleting the LSDV ORF102 gene. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the role of LSDV ORF102 in immune evasion and to characterize the recombinant virus lacking ORF102. Our results showed that the LSDV ORF102 protein inhibits IFN-β and other

Eradication of Transboundary Animal Diseases: Can the Rinderpest Success Story be Repeated?

A matrix system was developed to aid in the evaluation of the technical amenability to eradication, through mass vaccination, of transboundary animal diseases (TADs). The system involved evaluation of three basic criteria - disease management efficiency, surveillance and epidemiological factors - each in turn comprised of a number of elements (17 in all). On that basis, 25 TADs that have occurred or do occur in southern Africa and for which vaccines are available, in addition to rinderpest (incorporated as a yardstick because it has been eradicated worldwide), were ranked. Cluster analysis was
