Distribution of potential intermediate hosts for Fasciola hepatica and Fascioloides magna in Montana, USA.

A collection of lymnaeid snails in Montana was made over a 3 year period, in conjunction with a state-wide survey of the distribution of liver flukes in Montana. Collection areas were selected based on reports of infected cattle, sheep or wildlife, and with the intent of covering all geographic regions of the state. Snails were found at all 97 of the locations chosen for collections, with lymnaeids collected at 71 of the locations. The 97 sites were located in 28 of Montana's 56 counties. Nine lymnaeid species were collected, five of which have been reported either as natural or experimental i

Liver fluke disease (fascioliasis): epidemiology, economic impact and public health significance.

Liver fluke disease (fascioliasis) is an important parasitic disease found worldwide affecting sheep, goats, cattle and buffalo, as well as other domestic ruminants. The common causative agents are Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica which require various species of Lymnaea, fresh water snails, as their intermediate hosts. The epidemiology of the disease and its prevalence in Malaysia is mentioned briefly. The disease causes considerable impact on the economy of the livestock industry. The economic losses consist of costs of anthelmintics, drenches, labor, liver condemnation at meat inspection;

Human fascioliasis in Corozal, Puerto Rico.

A limited survey for human infection with F. hepatica was conducted in the mountain region of Corozal, Puerto Rico. This region was selected because bovine fascioliasis was hyperendemic, watercress was grown locally for human consumption, and Lymnaea cubensis snails (an intermediate host for F. hepatica in Puerto Rico) were found in the watercress farms. Of 110 fecal samples examined 12 were positive for F. hepatica. Seven matched serum samples were also positive for F. hepatica antibodies by counterelectrophoresis. Eleven of the 12 infected individuals had a history of eating watercress. This

Dermatological and Molecular Evidence of Human Cercarial Dermatitis in North-Eastern Poland.

Swimmer's itch or human cercarial dermatitis (HCD) appears as a skin rash caused by an allergic reaction to larval (cercariae) flatworm parasites of the family Schistosomatidae. In our study, two cases of HCD were analyzed; both of them were reported in people swimming in Lake Pluszne. In the summer of 2018, a sample of 397 snails was collected at swimming sites in that area. Five Lymnaea stagnalis (1.9%) were found to host cercariae of bird schistosomes. Positive samples were selected by amplification of the Internal Transcribed Spacers (ITS) gene region. Sequence analysis confirmed that they

Detection of Fasciola gigantica infection in snails by polymerase chain reaction.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect Fasciola gigantica infection in the snail intermediate host. Fasciola specific primers amplified a 124 bp fragment in PCR when the genomic DNA isolated from F. gigantica infected Lymnaea auricularia snails was used as template. In addition to the 124 bp amplicon, a ladder of DNA fragments representing amplification of the 124 bp repetitive sequences was observed. Genomic DNA of the parasite was used as a positive control, which also gave an amplification of the 124 bp fragment. DNA isolated from non-infected snails was used as a negative contr

Allogeneic and xenogeneic grafts in pulmonate gastropod molluscs: fates of neural transplants.

Neural intracerebral allo- and xenografts in pulmonate gastropods demonstrated a variation in the tolerance of neural xenogeneic grafts that was dependent on the phylogenetic distance between the donor and the host. Like allografts, neural congeneric xenografts (Hp/Haa and H1/Haa) of cerebral ganglia (CG) were tolerated and restored growth in juvenile mesocerebrum-deprived (Haa) snails. However, CG neural xenografts between different genera of stylommatophorans (Achatina fulica/Haa) or between genera of different orders (Lymnaea stagnalis: Basommatophora/Haa: Stylommatophora) revealed an inter

Fascioliasis problems in ruminants in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

The economic importance of fascioliasis in the livestock industry in the state of Rio Grande do Sul was assessed through the Federal meat inspection at major slaughter houses. Annual average rates of the livers condemned by Fasciola hepatica infection at the houses in the state have been recorded as 12-13% in cattle and 7% in sheep, respectively. Many farms in the provinces of the frontier regions of Brazil with Uruguay are contaminated with F. hepatica and acute fascioliasis with a high mortality among sheep flocks frequently occurs during the wet and cold winter season in the lowland areas o

Diversity of trematode cercariae among naturally infected lymnaeid snails from Phayao, Thailand.

Lymnaeids are aquatic snails playing an important role in the transmission of many parasitic trematode species of veterinary and medical importance. In this study, we assessed the presence of cercarial flukes in naturally infected lymnaeid snails from Phayao province, Thailand, and determined the species diversity of both the intermediate snail hosts and parasite larvae. A total of 3,185 lymnaeid snails were collected from paddy fields at 31 sites in eight districts of Phayao province between October 2021 and December 2022. Larval fluke infection was assessed using the cercarial shedding metho

Trophic factor-induced excitatory synaptogenesis involves postsynaptic modulation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.

Neurotrophic factors have well established roles in neuronal development, although their precise involvement in synapse formation and plasticity is yet to be fully determined. Using soma-soma synapses between identified Lymnaea neurons, we have shown recently that trophic factors are required for excitatory but not inhibitory synapse formation. However, neither the precise site (presynaptic versus postsynaptic cell) nor the underlying mechanisms have yet been defined. In the present study, synapse formation between the presynaptic cell visceral dorsal 4 (VD4) and its postsynaptic partner right

Multifunctional role of PACAP-like peptides in molluscs.

The purpose of this review is to highlight the role of pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) in a range of physiological and behavioral processes of gastropod molluscs, Helix and Lymnaea. Since its discovery in 1989 PACAP has become increasingly recognized for its important and diversified roles in the central and peripheral nervous system and in several peripheral organs of a variety of vertebrate and invertebrate species. Twenty-two years after its discovery, PACAP is now one of the most extensively studied of the neuropeptides. This review surveys the importance of PACA

Anthelmintic suppression of Fasciola hepatica infections in sheep.

In an experiment to examine the use of anthelmintics to suppress the faecal egg output of Fasciola hepatica from sheep and reduce the prevalence of infection on a sheep farm with a history of chronic fasciolosis, triclabendazole was administered four times annually for three years. During the first year, treatments in April, June, August and October failed to reduce the prevalence. In the subsequent two years the first annual treatment was brought forward to January and February, and the prevalence was reduced by 74.6 and 69.7 per cent, respectively. The mean plasma gamma-glutamyl transpeptida

[The ecological prerequisites for the spread of schistosomal dermatitis (cercariasis) in Moscow and the Moscow area].

Cases of schistosomiasis (cercarial dermatitis) were recorded in humans in Moscow in 1991. The authors analyze the ecologic conditions conducive to dissemination of cercariasis in 17 natural and artificial water bodies of Moscow and the Moscow region. They point out that high contamination of the water bodies with organic communal wastes and an abundant overgrowth of macrophytes favor the development of molluscs, intermediate hosts of Schistosoma, and promote the increase of the populations thereof. High number of Lymnaea ovata, L. auticularia, L. stagnalis, Planorbarius corneus, P. planorbis,

Ovine facioliasis (Fasciola gigantica) on the Ahmadu Bello University farm.

Outbreaks of fascioliasis (Fasciola gigantica) in sheep were observed on the Ahmadu Bello University farm during the end of the dry season in 1972-74 and in 1978. During 1972 especially the pregnant ewes were affected. Pre- and post-mortem exmaination of the affected sheep showed typical signs of acute fascioliasis; the number of flukes in the liver ranged between 77 and 239. The infections were acquired when the animals grazed near the man-made lake on the farm. A limited snail survey revealed the presence of Lymnaea natalensis with the highest incidence of snails as well as of larval Fasciol

Impaired locomotion and associative learning induced by chronic exposure to the antiepileptic drug carbamazepine in a widely used molluscan model.

Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a widely used antiepileptic drug and a persistent aquatic contaminant due to its high global consumption and poor removal by wastewater treatment plants. Although numerous studies have documented its adverse effects on aquatic organisms, knowledge about its impact on learning and the underlying neuronal mechanisms in invertebrates remains limited. Here, we investigated the behavioral and cellular effects of chronic exposure to an environmentally relevant concentration of CBZ (1 μg L-1) in the great pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis), a well-established model in neuroscience

Laboratory Assessment of Molluscicidal Activities of Cannabis sativa, Acacia nilotica, and Tinospora cordifolia Against Snail Host of Fasciola spp.

Background: The potential molluscicidal extracts, obtained from indigenous plants Cannabis sativa, Acacia nilotica, and Tinospora cordifolia, were tested for toxicity against freshwater pulmonate snail Lymnaea acuminata, an intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica. The organic extracts had a significant effect on young snails. Materials and Methods: All organic extracts and column-purified fractions gave median lethal concentrations (19-100.05 mg/L; 24 h) that fell well within the threshold level of 100 mg/L, set for a potential molluscicide by the World Health Organization. Results: The toxicit
