Lymphangiectasia represents a basic phenomenon of acute and chronic pathology in lymphatic filariasis, and the prevalence or degree of lymphatic dilation caused by filarial worms is considered an indirect measurement of the altered lymphatic function. We examined the morphological alterations of intrascrotal lymphatic vessels surgically removed from a volunteer infected by adult worms of Wuchereria bancrofti. Scanning electron microscopy revealed lymphatic vessels with an irregular endothelium and adherent flattened lymphocytes and macrophages in variable proportions. On transmission electron

Primary intestinal lymphangiectasia (PIL) is a rare protein-losing gastroenteropathy characterized by diffuse or localized ectasia of the enteric lymphatics, which can be accompanied by lymphatic abnormalities in other parts of the body. This condition results in hypoalbuminemia, hypogammaglobulinemia, and lymphopenia due to the abnormal leakage of lymphatic fluid into the gastrointestinal tract. As there are no specific serological or radiological tests available, the gold standard for diagnosing intestinal lymphangiectasia is endoscopic examination with histopathological examination of intes

Lymphangiomas, or lymphatic malformations (LM), are benign malformations of the lymphatic system characterized by abnormal proliferation of lymphatic vessels. It was first described by Virchow in 1854. They occur rarely in the oral cavity and involve the tongue dorsum more often. Though complete surgical excision is the gold standard and most desirable management, certain limitations restrict this approach. Laser therapy, cryotherapy, electrocautery, sclerotherapy, and intralesional injections of steroids and Bevacizumab are other treatment options in such cases. Here, we present three cases o

Axillary surgery for breast cancer may be followed, months to years later, by chronic arm lymphedema. A simple 'stopcock' mechanism (reduced lymph drainage from the entire limb through surviving lymphatics) does not explain many clinical aspects, including the delayed onset and selective sparing of some regions, e.g., hand. Quantitative lymphoscintigraphy reveals that lymph drainage is slowed in the subcutis, where most of the edema lies, and in the subfascial muscle compartment, which normally has much higher lymph flows than the subcutis. Although the muscle does not swell significantly, the

General lymphatic anomaly (GLA) is a very rare disorder, characterised by multifocal lymphatic malformations into various tissues that is due to congenital abnormalities of lymphatic development. No treatment has ever proved its efficiency. We report a 22-year-old man with recurrent bronchial casts due to thoracic involvement of GLA. After a 6-month treatment with sildenafil (20 mg three times a day), a phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor, chest CT scan showed a complete regression of ground-glass opacities and lung function test results improved substantially and remained stable for 1 year. Normal growth and development of lymphatic structures depends on mechanical forces created by accumulating interstitial fluid. However, prolonged exposure to pathologic mechanical stimuli generated by chronically elevated lymph flow results in lymphatic dysfunction. The mechanisms that transduce these mechanical forces are not fully understood. Our objective was to investigate molecular mechanisms that alter the growth and metabolism of isolated lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) exposed to prolonged pathologically elevated lymph flow in vivo within the anatomic and physiologic context of a la

Lymphangioma circumscriptum (LC) results from the development of abnormal lymphatic vasculature and is characterized by the presence of grouped vesicles filled with clear or colored fluid. Vulvar localization is uncommon. Abnormalities of the lymphatic system, such as lymphedema and cystic hygroma, are well-known features of genetic disorders such as Noonan syndrome (NS) and Turner syndrome. We report the case of a patient with NS who presented with LC of the vulva. We also discuss the expanding spectrum of clinical anomalies associated with the presentation of NS.

Chylothorax, the accumulation of lymphatic fluid within the pleural cavity, is rarely caused by blunt trauma. We present the case of a 26-year-old male involved in a high-speed motor vehicle collision who sustained a T8 chance fracture and developed progressive right-sided pleural effusion. The patient was managed conservatively with drainage and dietary modification. His clinical history of congenital cardiac surgery, abnormal facies, and prior pleural effusion raised suspicion for Noonan syndrome, which has been associated with lymphatic maldevelopment and predisposition to chylothorax. This

This case of a child presenting with severe acute respiratory failure requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation due to plastic bronchitis demonstrates the possibility of developing this rare condition despite having no known underlying inflammatory or lymphatic issues. The normal lymphatic anatomy and flow in our patient several weeks after the acute illness suggests a transient lymphatic flow abnormality possibly driven by the acute lower respiratory tract infection with human bocavirus-1 (HBoV1). As there are now four patients in the literature identified with Plastic bronchitis (PB) in

Lipoedema is a common but infrequently recognized condition causing bilateral enlargement of the legs in women. Although generally considered to be the result of an abnormal deposition of subcutaneous fat with associated oedema, the precise mechanisms responsible for oedema formation have yet to be fully established. In order to evaluate the possible role of lymphatic or venous dysfunction in the pathogenesis of lipoedema, 10 patients were investigated by photoplethysmography (venous function) and quantitative lymphoscintigraphy (lymphatic function). The results were compared with those from p

The lymphatic system is a network of vessels throughout the body that serves to return lymphatic fluid to the systemic blood circulation and serves as the immune system's highway in the afferent limb of the immune response. This paper reviews the basics of structure, function and development of the lymphatic system. The emphasis is on understanding the role of lymphatics in the cornea as related to angiogenesis and the clinical setting of corneal transplant rejection. The lymphatic system has two main functions: to drain excess extracellular fluid from capillary beds to return to the systemic

OBJECTIVES: Owing to its structural and anatomic characteristics, imaging of the lymphatic system has been difficult. The conventional diagnostic method of radionuclide-based imaging has the disadvantage of poor resolution. Recent work has shown that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can depict lymphatic channels in patients with lymphedema. This study evaluated the anatomic and functional images of contrast MR lymphangiography in the diagnosis of limb lymphatic circulation disorders.
METHODS: The study enrolled 27 patients with primary lymphedema. Four patients had bilateral disease, and 23 h

We report the CT and MRI appearances of dilated retroperitoneal lymphatic channels in six patients. In two patients, these dilated channels resembled a mass of confluent low-density lymph nodes on CT. On MR urography the lymphatic channels in all six patients were seen as a meshwork of multiple tubular, tortuous, fluid-filled structures in the retroperitoneum of the abdomen and pelvis. On axial T1W images, these channels were seen as numerous, interconnected small, nodular and streaky intensities and as a cloak of diffuse homogenous hyperintensity on T2W axial images. The lymphatic nature of t

Peripheral inflammation triggers a transient, well-defined set of behavioral changes known as sickness behavior1-3, but the mechanisms by which inflammatory signals originating in the periphery alter activity in the brain remain obscure. Emerging evidence has established meningeal lymphatic vasculature as an important interface between the central nervous system (CNS) and the immune system, responsible for facilitating brain solute clearance and perfusion by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)4,5. Here, we demonstrate that meningeal lymphatics both assist microglial activation and support the behavioral

INTRODUCTION: Lymphoedema results from impaired lymphatic transport leading to the pathologic accumulation of protein-rich lymphatic fluid in the interstitial space, most commonly in the extremities. Primary lymphoedema, a developmental abnormality of the lymphatic system, may become evident later in life when a triggering event exceeds the capacity of normal lymphatic flow.
CLINICAL PICTURE: We present a 3-year-old nephrotic syndrome patient with an unusual localisation for primary lymphoedema.
TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: The patient was treated with conservative approach and she was cured.

Cardio-facio-cutaneous (CFC) syndrome is one of the 'RASopathies', a group of phenotypically overlapping syndromes caused by germline mutations that encode components of the RAS-MAPK pathway. Germline mutations in BRAF cause CFC syndrome, which is characterized by heart defects, distinctive facial features and ectodermal abnormalities. To define the pathogenesis and to develop a potential therapeutic approach in CFC syndrome, we here generated new knockin mice (here Braf(Q241R/+)) expressing the Braf Q241R mutation, which corresponds to the most frequent mutation in CFC syndrome, Q257R. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated percutaneous lymphatic contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) for preoperative localization in preparation for lymphovenous anastomosis (LVA) microsurgery.
METHODS: Fourteen healthy volunteers and 14 patients with lower limb lymphoedema were studied. SonoVue® (Bracco, Milan, Italy) was used to measure lymphatic vessel diameters and depths in the dorsal foot, ankle, and lower leg of the subjects. In the lymphoedema patients, lymphatic vessels were observed for continuity, distortion, dilation, interruption, and other abnormalities. On the basis of the CEUS images,

Lymphedema is the edema that results from chronic lymphatic insufficiency. Lymphatic filariasis is caused by the filarial nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori. Lymphatic filariasis is common in tropical and subtropical regions. Early diagnosis and prompt therapy can be implemented using lymphoscintigraphy. Our patient is a 15-year-old boy presenting with a 3-month history of hydrocele. The patient was referred to us to rule out any lower limb lymphatic obstruction as the patient is from an endemic area. Tc Sulfur colloid (filtered) lymphoscintigraphy showed abnormal

Renal lymphangiomatosis is a disease characterized by abnormal formation of perirenal lymphatic vessels that fail to communicate with other retroperitoneal lymphatics; as a result, perirenal lymphatics dilate and form cysts. While typically an asymptomatic incidental finding, renal lymphangiomatosis rarely presents as flank or abdominal pain, ascites, impaired renal function, hypertension, hematuria, or proteinuria. Here we present the first known case of renal lymphangiomatosis found to spontaneously resolve following cardiac transplantation.
