Trace Mg-Doped Ultrasmall Iron Oxide Nanoparticles with Boosted T1 Relaxivity for Highly Sensitive MRI of Subsegmental Pulmonary Embolism.

Accurate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of microvascular occlusive diseases, exemplified by subsegmental pulmonary embolism (SSPE), remains a clinical challenge because of the intrinsic limitations of clinically available Gd-based small molecular contrast agents (CAs). Ultrasmall iron oxide nanoparticles (USIOs)-based CAs have emerged as promising alternatives, offering adjustable MRI T1 relaxivity, favorable pharmacokinetics, and high biocompatibility; however, their performance is critically hampered by inefficient atomic utilization for MR T1 relaxivity enhancement. Herein, we report Mg-d

Thermoablation of malignant kidney tumors using magnetic nanoparticles: an in vivo feasibility study in a rabbit model.

The objective of this study was to assess the technical feasibility of CT-guided magnetic thermoablation for the treatment of malignant kidney tumors in a VX2 tumor rabbit model. VX2 tumors were implanted into the kidneys of five rabbits and allowed to grow for 2 weeks. After preinterventional CT perfusion imaging, CT-guided injection of superparamagnetic iron oxide particles (300 microl) was performed, followed by exposure of the animals to an alternating electromagnetic field for 15 min (approximately 0.32 kA/m). Then animals underwent CT perfusion imaging again. Afterward, animals were sacr

Magnetic resonance imaging of the migration of neuronal precursors generated in the adult rodent brain.

Neural progenitor cells (NPCs) reside within the subventricular zone (SVZ) in rodents. These NPCs give rise to neural precursors in adults that migrate to the olfactory bulb (OB) along a well-defined pathway, the rostral migratory stream (RMS). Here we demonstrate that these NPCs can be labeled, in vivo, in adult rats with fluorescent, micron-sized iron oxide particles (MPIOs), and that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can detect migrating neural precursors carrying MPIOs along the RMS to the OB. Immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy indicated that particles were inside GFAP(+) neural p

Entry skin dose reduction in an inline MRI-linac using an electron contamination deflector coupled with a helium volume.

BACKGROUND: A unique feature of inline MRI-linac prototype systems is the changes to entry surface or skin doses. For the high field (1 T) Australian MRI-linac prototype, a strong surface dose increase is observed. This is a by-product of secondary electron contamination being focused down the MRI bore due to the magnetic field being parallel with the x-ray beam direction. It has been anticipated that future clinical treatments will utilize a 2 cm thick water equivalent bolus layer in air above the patient's skin to absorb the electron contamination that causes the large dose hot spot. However

GMP-compliant batch manufacturing of dextran-coated iron oxide nanoparticles: A process development case study.

Nanoparticles can be divided into several different classes. Within these classes, iron oxide-based nanoparticles exhibiting superparamagnetic properties occupy a special place because, in contrast to a majority of organic nanoparticles, they are magnetically accumulable and can be visualized in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In the course of extensive research over several years, the Section for Experimental Oncology and Nanomedicine (SEON) at the University Hospital of Erlangen has developed and fabricated superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles (SPION) termed SEONDex30. These particle

Multifunctional Nanotheranostics for Dual-Modal Imaging-Guided Precision Therapy of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma.

Currently, the low survival rate and poor prognosis of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma are ascribed to the lack of early and accurate diagnosis and resistance to radiotherapy. In parallel, the integration of imaging-guided diagnosis and precise treatment has gained much attention in the field of theranostic nanotechnology. However, constructing dual-modal imaging-guided nanotheranostics with desired imaging performance as well as great biocompatibility remains challenging. Therefore, we developed a simple but multifunctional nanotheranostic GdCPP for the early and accurate diagnosis and

Topological magneto-optical Kerr effect without spin-orbit coupling in spin-compensated antiferromagnet.

The magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE), the differential reflection of oppositely circularly polarized light, has traditionally been associated with relativistic spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which links a particle's spin with its orbital motion. In ferromagnets, large MOKE signals arise from the combination of magnetization and SOC, while in certain coplanar antiferromagnets, SOC-induced Berry curvature enables MOKE despite zero net magnetization. Theoretically, large MOKE can also arise in a broader class of magnetic materials with compensated spins, without relying on SOC - for example, in sys

Anti-signal Recognition Particle Antibody-positive Necrotizing Myopathy with Secondary Cardiomyopathy: The First Myocardial Biopsy- and Multimodal Imaging-proven Case.

A 69-year-old Japanese woman was admitted to our hospital with progressive muscle weakness and dysphagia. She was taking pitavastatin for dyslipidemia. Her serum creatine kinase was 6,300 U/L. Pitavastatin was stopped, but her symptoms deteriorated, and cardiac congestion appeared. A muscle biopsy showed necrotizing myopathy (NM), and anti-signal recognition particle (SRP) antibody was positive. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography showed an abnormal uptake, and magnetic resonance imaging showed abnormal gadolinium enhancement in the left ventricular wall. An endomyocardial biop

Management of posterior uveal melanoma.

In recent years, there have been a number of advances in the diagnosis and management of patients with malignant melanoma of the posterior uvea (ciliary body and choroid). This review provides a brief update on the current status of diagnostic modalities, such as fluorescein angiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, fine needle aspiration biopsy, and the radioactive phosphorus uptake test. Following that is a more detailed review of the current controversy regarding the natural course of uveal melanomas and the available therapeutic modalities. Current indi

Advances in Aerosol Formulation for Targeted Delivery of Therapeutic Agents from Nose to Brain.

The intricate anatomical and physiological barriers that prohibit pharmaceuticals from entering the brain continue to provide a noteworthy hurdle to the efficient distribution of medications to brain tissues. These barriers prevent the movement of active therapeutic agents into the brain. The present manuscript aims to describe the various aspects of brain-targeted drug delivery through the nasal route. The primary transport mechanism for drug absorption from the nose to the brain is the paracellular/extracellular mechanism, which allows for rapid drug transfer. The transcellular/intracellular

Development of Molecular Magnetic Resonance Imaging Tools for Longitudinal Tracking of Carotid Atherosclerotic Disease Using Fast Imaging with Steady-State Precession.

Identification of patients with high-risk asymptomatic carotid plaques remains a challenging but essential step in stroke prevention. Current selection criteria for intervention in carotid disease are still determined by symptomatology and degree of luminal stenosis. This strategy has been less effective in identifying the high-risk asymptomatic individual patients. Inflammation is the key factor that drives plaque instability causing clinical sequelae. Currently, there is no imaging tool in routine clinical practice to assess the inflammatory status within atherosclerotic plaques. Herein we d

Monitoring dendritic cell migration using 19F / 1H magnetic resonance imaging.

Continuous advancements in noninvasive imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have greatly improved our ability to study physiological or pathological processes in living organisms. MRI is also proving to be a valuable tool for capturing transplanted cells in vivo. Initial cell labeling strategies for MRI made use of contrast agents that influence the MR relaxation times (T1, T2, T2*) and lead to an enhancement (T1) or depletion (T2*) of signal where labeled cells are present. T2* enhancement agents such as ultrasmall iron oxide agents (USPIO) have been employed to study c

News in magnetic resonance imaging use for radiation oncology.

The purpose of this article is to give a summary of the progress of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in radiotherapy. MRI is an important imaging modality for treatment planning in radiotherapy. However, the registration step with the simulation scanner can be a source of errors, motivating the implementation of all-MRI simulation methods and new accelerators coupled with on-board MRI. First, practical MRI imaging for radiotherapy is detailed, but also the importance of a coherent imaging workflow incorporating all imaging modalities. Second, future evolutions and research domains such as quan

A Facile Route for the Preparation of Monodisperse Iron nitride at Silica Core/shell Nanostructures.

Uniform-sized iron oxide nanoparticles obtained from the solution phase thermal decomposition of the iron-oleate complex were encapsulated inside the silica shell by the reverse microemulsion technique, and then thermal treatment under NH3 to transfer the iron oxide to iron nitride. The transmission electron microscopy images distinctly demonstrated that the as-prepared iron nitride at silica core/shell nanostructures were highly uniform in particle-size distribution. By using iron oxide nanoparticles of 6.1, 10.3, 16.2, and 21.8 nm as starting materials, iron nitride nanoparticles with averag

Novel Molecular Imaging Approaches to Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Risk Stratification.

Selection of patients for abdominal aortic aneurysm repair is currently based on aneurysm size, growth rate, and symptoms. Molecular imaging of biological processes associated with aneurysm growth and rupture, for example, inflammation and matrix remodeling, could improve patient risk stratification and lead to a reduction in abdominal aortic aneurysm morbidity and mortality. (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography and ultrasmall superparamagnetic particles of iron oxide magnetic resonance imaging are 2 novel approaches to abdominal aortic aneurysm imaging evaluated in clinical t

Development of Polymer-Encapsulated, Amine-Functionalized Zinc Ferrite Nanoparticles as MRI Contrast Agents.

The need for stable and well-defined magnetic nanoparticles is constantly increasing in biomedical applications; however, their preparation remains challenging. We used two different solvothermal methods (12 h reflux and a 4 min microwave, MW) to synthesize amine-functionalized zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4-NH2) superparamagnetic nanoparticles. The morphological features of the two ferrite samples were the same, but the average particle size was slightly larger in the case of MW activation: 47 ± 14 nm (Refl.) vs. 63 ± 20 nm (MW). Phase identification measurements confirmed the exclusive presence of zi
