The DECISION project: DiscrEte Choice experIment Spinal manipulative therapy for lOw back paiN: A study protocol.

The smallest worthwhile effect (SWE) is the smallest beneficial effect of an intervention that justifies the costs, risks, and inconveniences. The objective is to establish the SWE of spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) for the treatment of low back pain (LBP), and to gain insight into how different attributes of the treatment are traded among each other when choosing SMT. Part 1. A mixed-methods study will be conducted to establish and prioritize a list of attributes influencing choices for those who consider SMT for the treatment of LBP. Individual interviews and consensus groups with chiropra

Association between spinal manipulative therapy and lumbar spine reoperation after discectomy: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Patients who undergo lumbar discectomy may experience ongoing lumbosacral radiculopathy (LSR) and seek spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) to manage these symptoms. We hypothesized that adults receiving SMT for LSR at least one year following lumbar discectomy would be less likely to undergo lumbar spine reoperation compared to matched controls not receiving SMT, over two years' follow-up. METHODS: We searched a United States network of health records (TriNetX, Inc.) for adults aged ≥ 18 years with LSR and lumbar discectomy ≥ 1 year previous, without lumbar fusion or instrumentation

Manipulation of anabolic and catabolic responses with bone morphogenetic protein and zoledronic acid in a rat spinal fusion model.

Bone fusion involves a complex set of regulated signaling pathways that control the formation of new bone matrix and the resorption of damaged bone matrix at the surgical site. It has been reported that systemically administering a single dose of zoledronic acid (ZA) at the optimal time increases the strength of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-mediated callus. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effect of BMP-2 and ZA in a rat spinal model. Sixty-seven rats were divided into 6 groups: group I (n=11) animals were implanted with a carrier alone, group II (n=12) animals were im

Satellite glial cell manipulation prior to axotomy enhances developing dorsal root ganglion central branch regrowth into the spinal cord.

The central and peripheral nervous systems (CNS and PNS, respectively) exhibit remarkable diversity in the capacity to regenerate following neuronal injury with PNS injuries being much more likely to regenerate than those that occur in the CNS. Glial responses to damage greatly influence the likelihood of regeneration by either promoting or inhibiting axonal regrowth over time. However, despite our understanding of how some glial lineages participate in nerve degeneration and regeneration, less is known about the contributions of peripheral satellite glial cells (SGC) to regeneration failure f

Self-Chiropractic Cervical Spinal Manipulation Resulting in Fatal Vertebral Artery Dissection: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Chiropractic cervical spinal manipulations have several complications and can result in vascular injury, including traumatic dissection of the vertebral arteries. A 43-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency department after performing a self-chiropractic spinal manipulation. She experienced headache and vomiting and was unresponsive with severe hypertension at the time of hospital admission. Clinical computerized tomography angiography showed narrowing of the right vertebral artery but was inconclusive for dissection or thrombosis. At autopsy, subacute dissection of the right vertebral a

Association Between Spinal Manipulation, Butalbital Prescription, and Medication Overuse Headache in Adults With Tension-Type Headache: Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Butalbital is an acute headache medication commonly prescribed for tension-type headache (TTH), although discouraged by guidelines due to a risk of medication overuse headache (MOH). Considering spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) may reduce TTH frequency and intensity, we hypothesized adults with TTH receiving chiropractic SMT would be less likely to receive a butalbital prescription over 2 years versus matched controls not receiving SMT. We secondarily compared likelihood of MOH between cohorts. METHODS: We searched a United States medical records database of patients att
