Intranasal vaccination of calves with Mannheimia haemolytica chimeric protein containing the major surface epitope of outer membrane lipoprotein PlpE, the neutralizing epitope of leukotoxin, and cholera toxin subunit B.

This study was done to determine if intranasal vaccination of weaned beef calves with a chimeric protein containing the immunodominant surface epitope of Mannheimia haemolytica PlpE (R2) and the neutralizing epitope of leukotoxin (NLKT) covalently linked to truncated cholera toxin (CT) subunit B (CTB) could stimulate secretory and systemic antibodies against M. haemolytica while enhancing resistance of cattle against M. haemolytica intrabronchial challenge. Sixteen weaned beef calves were intranasally vaccinated with CTB-R2-NLKT chimeric (SAC102) or with R2-NLKT-R2-NLKT chimeric (SAC89) protei

In Vitro Antibacterial Activity of Microbial Natural Products against Bacterial Pathogens of Veterinary and Zoonotic Relevance.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is considered one of the greatest threats to both human and animal health. Efforts to address AMR include implementing antimicrobial stewardship programs and introducing alternative treatment options. Nevertheless, effective treatment of infectious diseases caused by bacteria will still require the identification and development of new antimicrobial agents. Eight different natural products were tested for antimicrobial activity against seven pathogenic bacterial species (Brachyspira sp., Chlamydia sp., Clostridioides sp., Mannheimia sp., Mycobacterium sp., Mycopl

Detection of Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae in Pneumonic Mountain Goat ( Oreamnos americanus) Kids.

We documented bronchopneumonia in seven mountain goat ( Oreamnos americanus) kid mortalities between 2011 and 2015 following a pneumonia epizootic in bighorn sheep ( Ovis canadensis) and sympatric mountain goats in the adjacent East Humboldt Range and Ruby Mountains in Elko County, Nevada, US. Gross and histologic lesions resembled those described in bighorn lambs following all-age epizootics, and Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae was detected with real-time PCR in the lower and upper respiratory tracts of all kids. Mannheimia haemolytica, with one isolate being leukotoxigenic, was cultured from the up

Acute die-off of chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) in the Eastern Austrian Alps due to bacterial bronchopneumonia with Pasteurellaceae.

Monitoring circulating pathogens in wildlife populations is important in evaluating causes and sources of disease as well as understanding transmission between wild and domestic animals. In spring 2010, a sudden die-off in a chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) population sharing habitat with livestock occurred in northeastern Austria. Nineteen animals were submitted for examination. Necropsy and pathohistologic and bacteriologic results yielded lesions associated with Pasteurellaceae species. Additional testing included enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus and random amplification of poly

Comparative Lung Bacterial Community Profiles in Pneumonic and Non-Pneumonic Akkaraman Lambs.

Ovine pneumonia is a multifactorial respiratory disease, yet bacterial community alterations associated with pathologically confirmed pneumonia in lambs remain poorly characterised. This study investigated the lung bacterial microbiota of non-pneumonic and pneumonic Akkaraman lambs by integrating gross and histopathological examination with 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The final dataset comprised lung samples from 15 non-pneumonic and 14 pneumonic lambs. Alpha diversity did not differ significantly between groups, whereas bacterial community composition differed significantly for both Br

The nasopharyngeal microbiota of feedlot cattle.

The bovine nasopharyngeal tract plays an important role in animal health and welfare by acting as a site for the carriage of pathogens causing bovine respiratory disease, a condition which results in significant morbidity and mortality in feedlot cattle. We characterized the bacterial nasopharyngeal microbiota in cattle at feedlot entry (day 0) and day 60 using 454 pyrosequencing. We also identified the most frequently isolated aerobic bacteria from nasopharyngeal swabs after plating onto three types of media. The cattle nasopharyngeal microbiota was composed primarily of Proteobacteria (68.9%

Bacterial, PCR and clinico-pathological diagnosis of naturally occurring pneumonic pasturellosis (mannheimiosis) during subtropical climate in sheep.

Mannheimia haemolytica is causative agent of pneumonic pasteurellosis (mannheimiosis) that causes huge economic losses to livestock farmers. We investigated the microbial and clinico-pathological patterns associated with ovine pneumonic pasturellosis during an outbreak. Prior to death, infected sheep revealed clinical signs including dyspnoea, salivation, pyrexia and mucopurulent nasal discharge. Mortality was significantly (p < 0.05) high in young sheep as compared to adults. Necropsy findings revealed presence of froth in trachea, congestion and consolidation of lungs, pulmonary edema, sever

Bacteria identified from deep nasopharyngeal swabs and non-endoscopic bronchoalveolar lavage in calves on farms with a history of bronchopneumonia.

BACKGROUND: We describe the occurrence of bacteria associated with bovine respiratory disease (BRD) on Austrian beef operations and compare bacterial culture results from double guarded deep nasopharyngeal swab (DNS) and non-endoscopic bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples. Fifty pre-weaned beef calves from 13 conveniently selected commercial beef operations with a history of BRD were sampled between April and August 2024. From each calf a DNS and a BAL sample was obtained and cultured for Pasteurella multocida, Mannheimia haemolytica, Histophilus somni, Bibersteinia trehalosi, Mannheimia spp.
