Structure of the manure resistome and the associated mobilome for assessing the risk of antimicrobial resistance transmission to crops.

In this study, the impact of bovine and poultry manure on the quantitative and qualitative composition of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the environmental mobilome associated with antimicrobial resistance in soil and crops was determined with the use of next generation sequencing methods. The aim of the study was to perform a metagenomic analysis of manure to estimate the risk of the transmission of ARGs and bacterial drug resistance carriers to fertilized soil and crops. The total copy number of ARGs was nearly four times higher in poultry manure (555 ppm) than in bovine manure (140 p

Swine manure valorization for phosphorus and nitrogen recovery by catalytic-thermal hydrolysis and struvite crystallization.

Phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) recovery from swine manure has attracted considerable interest for biomass valorization. In this study, a catalytic-thermal hydrolysis (TH) process combined with struvite crystallization was investigated to promote P and N conversion from swine manure. Its potential as a phosphate-based fertilizer was investigated. Two periods for P solubilization and transformation were observed, i.e., an initial increase with reaction time followed by a decrease as treatment continued. Nitrogen conversion efficiency increased with increasing temperature and time. Treatment of

Morphological effect of dichloromethane on alfalfa (Medicago sativa) cultivated in soil amended with fertilizer manures.

In this work, we investigated the morphological effect of dichloromethane (DCM) on alfalfa (Medicago sativa) plant. We studied in vitro the influence of its concentration on alfalfa germination. The plants were placed in pots for 15 weeks, and exposed to increasing concentrations of DCM (50 µg L-1 and 84 mg L-1). In addition, we examined the effect of two manures (cow and sheep), which were applied to a contaminated soil, on alfalfa plant growth. The effect of the presence of dichloromethane is obvious even in plant-soil manure system. In fact, in the event of contamination, the soil-cow manur

Presence of veterinary antibiotics in livestock manure in two Southeastern Europe countries, Albania and Kosovo.

Nowadays, veterinary drug application has become an integral practice in livestock farming. Veterinary antibiotics (VAs) are administered onto animals for therapeutic use; meanwhile, in some countries, they are used for growth promotion. To indicate the level of VAs use in livestock breeding in two countries, Albania and Kosovo, their presence was studied in the animal manure. In total, 38 manure samples, 22 from Kosovo and 16 samples from Albania, belonging to cattle, pig, and poultry, were collected and investigated for the presence of VAs. Seven VAs and 2 metabolites, from the groups of sul

[Effects of Environmental Factors on Tetracycline and Macrolides Resistance Genes in Cattle Manure Composting Systems].

The effects of environmental factors and bacterial numbers on typical tetracycline resistance genes (tetQ, tetW, tetM, tetG, tetA, and tetX) and macrolide resistance genes (erm35, erm36, ermB, ermF, ermT, and ermX) during cow manure composting were investigated and quantified via real-time quantitative PCR. The results suggested that the abundance of tetQ, tetW, tetG, and tetX increased by 1.7, 0.3, 84.8, and 4.5 times respectively, whereas tetM decreased by 83.1% during the heating stages of cow manure composting. The abundance of tetG and tetX increased by 23.8 and 11.5 times respectively, w

Heavy metal availability, bioaccessibility, and leachability in contaminated soil: effects of pig manure and earthworms.

A pot experiment and a leaching experiment were conducted to investigate the effects of earthworms and pig manure on heavy metals (Cd, Pb, and Zn) immobility, in vitro bioaccessibility and leachability under simulated acid rain (SAR). Results showed manure significantly increased soil organic carbon (SOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), available phosphorus (AP), total N, total P and pH, and decreased CaCl2-extractable metals and total heavy metals in water and SAR leachate. The addition of earthworms significantly increased AP (from 0.38 to 1.7 mg kg-1), and a downward trend in CaCl2-extract

Land-applied goat manure as a source of human Q-fever in the Netherlands, 2006-2010.

Studies have shown a link between Q-fever positive farms (QFPFs) and community cases of human Q-fever. Our study is the first to investigate the potential role of contaminated land-applied manure in human Q-fever, based on a large set of nationwide notification and farm management data. Time between manure application and disease onset in geographically linked notified human cases coincided with the incubation period of Q-fever. Proximity of contaminated land parcels predicted human cases better than proximity of QFPFs (80% vs. 58%, 0-5 km in 2009). Incidence around QFPFs and contaminated land

Changes in concentrations of fluoroquinolones and of ciprofloxacin-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in chicken feces and manure stored in a heap.

This study evaluated the impact of storing chicken manure on the degradation of enrofloxacin (ENR) and ciprofloxacin (CIP), and on the survival of CIP-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. At 24 d of age, half of 8900 chickens received ENR for 5 d. After the animals departed, their manure was stored in two heaps for 63 d. Enterobacteriaceae were cultured on media containing 0 to 32 mg L⁻¹ of CIP. A total of 320 isolates were fingerprinted using enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-polymerase chain reaction (ERIC-PCR) to evaluate community structure. Initial concentrations of ENR and CIP in

The development of alum rates to enhance the remediation of phosphorus in fluvial systems following manure spills.

Following the remediation of animal manure spills that reach surface waters, contaminated streambed sediments are often left in place and become a source for internal phosphorus (P) loading within the stream in subsequent flow. The objective of this study was to develop treatment rates and combinations of alum and CaCO(3) to mitigate P from contaminated sediments of different particle size distributions following a manure spill. Sediment specific alum and CaCO(3) treatment rates were developed based upon the resultant alum treatment ranges established for each sediment type. Clay loam sediment

Effect of tillage and rainfall on transport of manure-applied Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts through soil.

Most waterborne outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis have been attributed to agricultural sources due to the high prevalence of Cryptosporidium oocysts in animal wastes and manure spreading on farmlands. No-till, an effective conservation practice, often results in soil having higher water infiltration and percolation rates than conventional tillage. We treated six undisturbed no-till and six tilled soil blocks (30 by 30 by 30 cm) with 1 L liquid dairy manure containing 10(5) C. parvum oocysts per milliliter to test the effect of tillage and rainfall on oocyst transport. The blocks were subjected to

Different behavior of tetracyclines and sulfonamides in sandy soils after repeated fertilization with liquid manure.

Recently we showed that tetracyclines tend to persist and may accumulate in sandy soils after repeated fertilizations with liquid manure. We continued these field investigations from 2001 to 2003 and observed no further accumulation of tetracyclines in soil, but found that the average tetracycline concentration remained higher than 150 microg/kg soil. From 2000 to 2002, approximately 330 g tetracycline, 7 g chlortetracycline, 28 g sulfamethazine, and 57 g sulfadiazine per hectare were transferred via liquid manure to the topsoil (0-30 cm). Nevertheless, no leaching of tetracyclines into deeper

Diversity and performance of thermophilic methane oxidizing microbiomes from a full scale manure gas biofilter.

Methane emissions from manure management contribute substantially to greenhouse gas release. Compost biofilters offer a sustainable approach for methane mitigation through the activity of methane oxidizing bacteria. However, thermophilic compost biofilters remain poorly characterized compared with mesophilic systems. This study investigated a full-scale thermophilic compost biofilter treating manure derived gas to evaluate the impact of nutrient availability on methane oxidation performance, and the potential for simultaneous removal of organic micropollutants. Batch experiments at 50 °C revea

Cluster of Mycobacterium smegmatis mastitis cases in a dairy herd incorporating recycled manure solids bedding.

This study examined uncommon mastitis cases in a research barn incorporating recycled manure solids (RMS) as bedding. The cases occurred after barn renovation, including the conversion of the herringbone milking parlor to an automatic milking system (AMS) and the replacement of rubber mattress stalls with deep-bedded stalls maintained daily with RMS. Cows were milked at the herringbone milking parlor until the automatic milking system was available. Approximately 6 months after the implementation of AMS and deep-bedded stalls, the first two cows exhibited cow level somatic cell counts ≥ millio

Using the sulfide-oxidizing bacterium Geobacillus thermodenitrificans to restrict H2S release during chicken manure composting.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a toxic gas massively released during chicken manure composting. Diminishing its release requires efficient and low cost methods. In recent years, heterotrophic bacteria capable of rapid H2S oxidation have been discovered but their applications in environmental improvement are rarely reported. Herein, we investigated H2S oxidation activity of a heterotrophic thermophilic bacterium Geobacillus thermodenitrificans DSM465, which contains a H2S oxidation pathway composed by sulfide:quinone oxidoreductase (SQR) and persulfide dioxygenase (PDO). This strain rapidly oxidized

Renewable P sources: P use efficiency of digestate, processed animal manure, compost, biochar and struvite.

In the attempt to close nutrient cycles, organic fertilizers and soil improvers are getting interest as renewable P sources for crops. However, both the P availability of these compounds for crops and the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study composts (n = 8), biochars (n = 5), animal manure and processed animal manure (n = 13), digestates and processed digestates (n = 15) and blends of digestates with compost/animal manure/mineral fertilizers (n = 15) were analyzed for chemical composition, organic matter stability and P use efficiency (PUE). Biochar produced from mineral salt-impregnated chicken manure: Fertility properties and potential for carbon sequestration.

In this study, nutrient properties and carbon sequestration potential of biochars derived from chicken manure (CM) impregnated with mineral salts (calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, ferric chloride) were evaluated. Pretreatment with mineral salts reduced phosphorus (P) availability via the formation of insoluble metal phosphate minerals. Less carbon was lost during the pyrolysis of pretreated CM, and the produced biochars (BCCa, BCMg, and BCFe) were more stable (i.e., reduced C loss during chemical oxidation and less CO2 release during incubation) than pristine biochars. Characterization of zinc oxide nanoparticle (nZnO) alginate beads in reducing gaseous emission from swine manure.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and greenhouse gases' emission from livestock production facilities are of concern to human welfare and the environment. Application of nanoparticles (NPs) has emerged as a potential option for minimizing these gaseous emissions. Application of bare NPs, however, could have an adverse effect on plants, soil, human health, and the environment. To minimize NPs' exposure to the environment by recovering them, NPs were entrapped in polymeric beads for treating livestock manure. The objectives of the research were to understand the mechanism of gaseous reduction in swine manu
