In recent decades, the general tendency has switched from the use of tobacco products to the inhalation of marijuana with or without the addition of tobacco. The majority of existing research on marijuana use focuses on its euphoric effects. Pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, and subcutaneous emphysema are infrequently described in the medical literature in association with cannabis use. It is a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge because of its infrequency of occurrence. We see a huge diversity of multisystem involvement linked with marijuana smoking, and physicians should be aware of this unc

Marijuana use among all age groups has been increasing, including among older adults aged ≥65 years. There is a lack of epidemiologic data examining arrhythmia risk among users of marijuana. We evaluated cross-sectional associations between current and past marijuana smoking and arrhythmias among 1485 participants from the Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis who underwent extended ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring with the Zio Patch XT. Outcomes included premature atrial contractions, runs of supraventricular tachycardia, premature ventricular contractions, and runs of nonsustained v

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Smoking prevalence among homeless adults is exceedingly high, and high rates of comorbid substance use are among the barriers to abstinence experienced by this group. The extent to which smoking cessation might engender an escalation in comorbid substance use could be a concern prohibiting treatment provision and engagement. This study examined whether smoking abstinence status was associated with alcohol and substance use at 26 weeks post-randomization among homeless smokers in a smoking cessation trial.
DESIGN: The current study was a secondary analysis of randomized sm

Marijuana-based treatment for refractory epilepsy shows promise in surveys, case series, and clinical trials. However, literature on their EEG effects is sparse. Our objective is to analyze the effect of marijuana on EEG in a 24-year-old patient with idiopathic generalized epilepsy treated with cannabis. We blindly reviewed 3 long-term EEGs-a 24-hour study while only on antiepileptic drugs, a 72-hour EEG with Cannabis indica smoked on days 1 and 3 in addition to antiepileptic drugs, and a 48-hour EEG with combination C indica/sativa smoked on day 1 plus antiepileptic drugs. A study of 1,690 mother/child pairs at Boston City Hospital was conducted to assess the impact of maternal alcohol consumption on fetal development when confounding variables were controlled. Level of maternal drinking prior to pregnancy was associated with shorter duration of gestation. Lower maternal weight change, history of maternal illnesses, cigarette smoking, and marijuana use, however, were more consistently related to adverse fetal growth and development. New findings in this study include a negative association between maternal marijuana use during pregnancy and fetal growth. Also wh

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate prospectively the effects of cocaine and marijuana use on pregnancy outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN: A prospective multicenter cohort study was conducted at seven university-based prenatal clinics in the United States from 1984 to 1989. The cohort described herein consisted of a multiethnic population of 7470 pregnant women. Information on the use of drugs was obtained from personal interviews at entry to the study and assays of serum obtained during pregnancy. Pregnancy outcome data (low birth weight [< 2500 gm], preterm birth [< 37 weeks' gestation], and abruptio p

The present investigation aimed to provide an objective narrative review of the existing literature pertaining to the benefits and harms of marijuana use for the treatment of the most common medical and psychological conditions for which it has been allowed at the state level. Common medical conditions for which marijuana is allowed (i.e., those conditions shared by at least 80 percent of medical marijuana states) were identified as: Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, cachexia/wasting syndrome, cancer, Crohn's disease, epilepsy and seizures, glaucoma, hepatitis C virus, human

BACKGROUND: The increasing numbers of older-adult marijuana users call for better understanding of their mental and substance use disorders (MSUDs).
METHODS: Data came from the 2012-2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC-III; N=14,715 respondents aged 50 +). Multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to compare never users, past-year users, and ex-users on past-year and lifetime MSUDs. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association of marijuana use patterns in the past year and during the peak use period with lifetime MSUDs

The increased use of E-cigarettes and hookah among young consumers represents a public health concern. This study aimed to investigate the frequency and patterns of use of E-cigarettes and hookah among medical trainees. This cross-sectional multinational online survey included medical students, residents, and fellows in Brazil, the U.S., and India between October 2020 and November 2021. Information on sociodemographics; mental health; and E-cigarettes, hookah, tobacco, marijuana, and alcohol use were collected. Generalized structural equation models were used in 2022 to explore the factors ass

BACKGROUND: Global discussions surrounding the medical use of marijuana have gained momentum; yet in Malaysia, cannabis remains strictly prohibited under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Despite its legal status, there is growing public discourse on its potential therapeutic benefits. Understanding public acceptance is critical for informing future health policies and public education efforts.
METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional design, web-based survey among Malaysians aged 18 years and above using convenience and snowball sampling methods. The survey collected data on sociodemographic c

Vanishing lung syndrome (VLS) is a rare and distinct clinical syndrome that usually affects young men. VLS leads to severe progressive dyspnea and is characterized by extensive, asymmetric, peripheral, and predominantly upper lobe giant lung bullae. Case reports have suggested an additive role of marijuana use in the development of this disease in young male tobacco smokers. We herein report a case of a 65-year-old Hispanic male previously diagnosed with severe emphysema and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), with a history of intravenous heroin use and active marijuana smoking who pr

BACKGROUND: Smoking marijuana in a cigar (blunt use) is gaining popularity in the U.S. Research suggests that blunt users differ from exclusive cigar or marijuana users on a variety of demographic and substance use factors. Misreporting of blunts and cigars is also common, particularly among young people, and may lead to inaccurate prevalence estimates. To determine subtype differences, this study investigated the prevalence and demographic, mental health, and substance use correlates of four mutually-exclusive groups of blunt, cigar, and marijuana past 30-day users (cigar-only, blunt-only, no

Facets of reading and language were examined in 131 9- to 12-year-old children for whom prenatal exposure to marijuana and cigarettes had been ascertained. The subjects were from a low-risk, predominantly middle class sample who are participants in an ongoing longitudinal study. Discriminant Function Analysis revealed a dose-dependent association that remained after controlling for potential confounds, between prenatal cigarette exposure and lower language and lower reading scores, particularly on auditory-related aspects of this latter measure. The findings are interpreted as consistent with

BACKGROUND: Experimental models suggest that in utero photoperiod influences circadian regulation and systems tied to later-life anxiety, depression, and addiction. Whether in utero photoperiod is associated with mental health and substance use in adolescents and young adults remains unknown.
METHODS: 10,721 full term born children from the GUTS cohort contributed to these analyses. Total photoperiod was calculated by summing daily light hours across 280 gestational days using each offspring's exact birth date and state. We used multivariable adjusted generalized estimating equations, logisti

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Although research shows that adolescents who are exposed to neighborhood violence (NV) are more likely to use substances to cope with the trauma associated with NV, most of these studies are from small and unrepresentative samples that often lack diversity. Drawing on a large nationally representative sample of adolescents, the objectives of this study were to examine the prevalence of exposure to NV, and the cross-sectional association between exposure to NV and different types of substance use.
METHODS: Data for this study were obtained from the 2023 Youth Risk Beh
