A 39-year-old woman who had experienced slight chest discomfort for a few months was referred to our hospital with an abnormal shadow on a regular checkup chest X-ray film. A computed tomography scan revealed a large well-defined mass in close relationship to the great vessels of the anterior mediastinum. Magnetic resonance imaging showed the anterior mediastinal mass, which was about 25 cm in diameter, expanding to the left pleural cavity with heterogeneous intensity. Because of the size and location of the mass, a combination of anterolateral thoracotomy and partial longitudinal median stern

INTRODUCTION: Primary mediastinal liposarcomas are rare tumours with various histological features. Local recurrence is frequent.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 70-year-old patient, in whom a mediastinal mass was resected surgically and identified as a mediastinal, "lipoma-like" liposarcoma on histopathological examination. Nine years later, the patient complained of dyspnoea with cough. The chest X-ray showed anterior mediastinal enlargement and the chest CT scan revealed a heterogeneous mass containing both solid tissue and fat. The patient underwent a successful surgical resection of

Aspergillosis, due to moulds belonging to the genus Aspergillus, occurs in patients with residual lung cavities. The clinical manifestations are determined by the host immune response, ranging from a local inflammatory response to the systemic dissemination. Haemoptysis is the most common symptom. The chest X-ray reveals a round mass with a radio-lucent crescent of air. The antifungal treatments are successful.

Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura is a relatively rare tumor originating from the mesencymal cells. Most patients, even with large tumor sizes, are completely asymptomatic for a long time. They are usually benign, but local recurrence is common, so it is especially important to remove them with an intact edge. A 77-year-old male patient had a chest X-ray for shortness of breath. A chest CT scan described a right-sided, sharp-edged, dorsally located mass above the aperture. A transthoracic biopsy was performed which confirmed a solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura. During surgery, a 17 × 16

Three infants with late presentation of Bochdalek hernia are presented. The presenting symptoms were cough, intermittent vomiting, dyspnea, and cyanosis. Initial diagnoses of isolated paravertebral mass and foreign material aspiration were made in two infants, based on plain chest x-ray findings and history of the patients. Further radiological investigations, such as contrast upper gastrointestinal series or enema, computerized tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging of the chest, suggested the diagnosis of Bochdalek hernia. The hernia was found on the left side in two patients and on the

Pulmonary nocardiosis is a common disease in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)infected patients. In most cases, the disease progresses slowly. Here, we have presented a case of pulmonary nocardiosis that rapidly progressed. A 35-year-old woman with acquired immune deficiency syndrome and superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome, who was previously lost to follow-up, presented to our hospital chronic non-productive cough. Her CD4 count was 33 cells/µL (4%). Chest X-ray revealed opacity in the right upper lobe of the lung, and the results of sputum acid-fast staining were negative. Anti-tuberculosis a

Chest X-ray in a 46-year-old woman with a history of hysterectomy for a uterine mass revealed a nodular opacity measuring 3 cm. Computed tomography identified 3 other nodules. Histology examination of the lung lesions identified the same configuration as that of the hysterectomy specimen performed two years earlier: benign metastatic leiomyoma. Approximately 40 cases have been reported in the literature.

We report an unusual case of 9.5-cm-sized embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma arose from a mediastinal mature teratoma in a 46-yr-old man. A man presented with chest trauma as a result of an accident at 10 September 2011. On chest X-ray, an anterior mediastinal mass was detected. To obtain further information, chest computed tomography (CT) with contrast enhancement was performed, revealing an anterior mediastinal mass. Complete surgical excision was performed and entire specimen was evaluated. Pathologic diagnosis was embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma arising in mature cystic teratoma. After surgical excisio

A 49-year-old female who presented with 3 weeks of exertional chest pain had an abnormal mediastinal finding at chest x-ray imaging. Conventional, nongated computed tomography of the chest revealed a "mass" in proximity to the right atrium. 64-slice, cardiac gated computed tomographic coronary angiography, and transesophageal echocardiography delineated the "mass" as a coronary artery fistula structure. The fistula originated from the left main as a tubular vessel that continued into an aneurysmal sac-like cavity that emptied into the superior vena cava near the right atrium. Computed tomograp

BACKGROUND Catamenial pneumothorax (CP) is a spontaneous pneumothorax commonly associated with menstrual periods. Endometrial tissues most commonly involve the pelvic region. However, after the pelvis, the lungs are most frequently involved. Thoracic endometriosis should always be suspected in young women presenting with CP. CASE REPORT A 30-year-old woman with history of endometriosis presented with chief complaint of umbilical pain. A computerized tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen and pelvis was performed, which showed an incidental finding of a large right-sided pneumothorax. Chest X-ray

The patient was a 75-year-old male who consulted the department of respiratory tract internal medicine in our hospital for left chest pain occurring from the beginning of December 2003. Chest X-ray indicated a tumorous shadow in the left lower lung field. A chest CT also revealed an irregularly shaped mass shadow in the left lower lobe. Since bronchoscopy failed to establish a definitive diagnosis, the patient was referred to our department for surgery to undertake thoracotomy. After left pneumonectomy being performed based on a suspicion of lung abscess, pathological examination of specimen f

INTRODUCTION: Screening for osteoporosis is mainly done by measuring bone mineral density using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan. Screening does not usually start until 65 years. Many people 50 to 65 years may unknowingly suffer from progressive bone loss and may be at risk of osteoporosis. Opportunistic use of chest X-rays obtained for other indications could potentially be used to identify patients with signs of bone demineralization and at risk of osteoporosis in primary care settings particularly where DXA may not be readily available. We aimed at comparing the prevalence of bon

Prenatal diagnosis of lymphangiomas located in the posterior mediastinum has been reported to be extremely rare. We present a fetus with a prenatally diagnosed posterior mediastinal lymphangioma found at 28 weeks' gestation. Fetal ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a 46 x 26 x 30 mm multicystic mass extending above the diaphragm, located in the posterior mediastinum. The mass was symmetrically shaped and surrounded the thoracic aorta. No remarkable change was noted in the size, shape and texture of the cyst by serial ultrasound and the fetus did not develop cardiac failur

A 65-year-old man was admitted to Oita Medical University Hospital with complaints of right back pain, diplopia and vertigo. A tumor, 33 x 25 mm, was found on the right lateral chest wall on admission. Chest X-ray film and chest CT scan showed a tumor, 50 x 30 mm, in the right posterior mediastinum. The chest wall tumor was diagnosed as malignant hemangiopericytoma by biopsy, and the same diagnosis was made for the mediastinal lesion by aspiration cytology. Brain MRI showed a mass at the skull base, which was found to be a metastatic bone tumor from the mediastinal malignant hemangiopericytoma

Pancoast's syndrome is characterized by pain in the shoulders and upper extremities, Horner's syndrome, bone loss and hand muscle atrophy. Bronchogenic carcinoma is the most common cause, although other neoplasms or lung infection are occasionally responsible. An apical mass on the chest film can be seen in over 90% of cases, although apical pleural thickening is sometimes the only radiographic finding. We describe a patient whose clinical picture was highly suggestive of Pancoast's syndrome but whose chest film was normal. Magnetic resonance imaging disclosed a cervical mass adjacent to the b

We report a case of solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) originating from the visceral pleura, which presented an extrapleural sign on chest computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A 44-year-old woman presented at our hospital for a growing mass visible in chest X-rays. Chest CT and MRI detected a 27×12 mm lesion on the intrathoracic side of the right 3rd intercostal space. The extrapleural signs strongly suggested the tumor to be chest wall origin. However, the tumor was found to be pedunculate with an umbrella-like appearance locating on the visceral pleura of the lung. Histop

Hydatid disease remains a serious health problem in Mediterranean countries. Living in a rural area is an important risk factor for the disease. Hydatid cysts are usually located in the liver, lungs and brain. Mediastinal hydatid disease is very rare and has been noted only anecdotally in the literature. The present article reports a case of a mediastinal hydatid cyst rupturing into the pleural cavity, which was associated with pneumothorax of the same side. The patient's previous chest x-rays (posteroanterior and left lateral views) showed a well-defined mediastinal mass on the left side, and

The authors report a case of a large Morgagni hernia treated by laparoscopy. The patient complained of dyspnea, cough, and a sensation of tightness in the chest 1 month prior to admission. Preoperative diagnosis was made by chest x-ray, CT scan, and MRI, which showed a large right paracardiac mass consisting of an omentum and transverse colon. By reducing the hernial content, a 6 x 10-cm defect was revealed; the repair was performed with a Marlex mesh sutured by a hernia stapler. Postoperative recovery was uneventful, and 3 months after surgery the patient is well. Laparoscopic treatment of a

Ancient schwannoma is a distinctive type of schwannoma occurring mostly in the retroperitoneum. The presentation in the posterior mediastinum is rare. The term 'ancient' represents a group of neurogenic tumours showing degenerative changes with marked nuclear atypia. A 26-year-old man was incidentally detected to have an upper mediastinal mass lesion in the chest X-ray. MRI chest revealed a mixed signal intensity lesion in the left side upper para spinal region of the posterior mediastinum. The patient underwent left posterior thoracotomy and excision of the mass was done. Postoperative period
