Impact of incorrect oral habits on mastication anomalies in children and adolescents - literature review and own observations.

Incorrect oral habits, such as dysfunctions and parafunctions, may lead to the development of mastication anomalies. The present analysis covered 15 publications from the years 2005-2015, examining the impact of harmful oral habits and dysfunctions on the development of mastication anomalies. Based on the literature review, it can be stated that malocclusion is common in populations worldwide, irrespective of the racial background. The malocclusion severity is related to harmful habits and dysfunctions co-occurring during individual development. The prevalence of malocclusion and dental anomal

Factors Affecting Mandibular Movement During Mastication in Nursing Home Residents: A Two-Year Follow-Up Study.

Background/Objectives: Declining masticatory function affects dietary variety, nutritional status, cognitive function, and health. Although factors related to chewing ability have been reported, the causes of temporal changes in masticatory kinematics in older adults remain unclear because prospective longitudinal data remain limited. Objectives: This follow-up study investigated factors associated with changes in masticatory movement in older adults requiring long-term care. Methods: Participants were 42 older adults residing in long-term care facilities. Survey items included mandibular kine

Finite element contact stress analysis of the temporomandibular joints of patients with temporomandibular disorders under mastication.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) represent a group of diseases occurred in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and its surrounding tissues. In epidemiological studies, up to 75% of adults have shown at least one sign of temporomandibular disorders during their examinations. The incongruous biomechanical environment in the TMJ is the main pathogenic factor of TMD. This study attempts to determine the mechanical differences in different groups of TMD patients through biomechanics and to explain the mechanical pathogenesis of TMD according to various cases. METHODS: Ele

Comparative cross-sectional study of masticatory performance and mastication predominance for patients with missing posterior teeth.

PURPOSE: Missing posterior teeth can decrease masticatory function and cause horizontal mastication deviation, i.e., mastication predominance. Mastication predominance may lead to abnormal tooth attrition and temporomandibular disorders. This study evaluated masticatory performance and mastication predominance in patients with missing posterior teeth to investigate effects of missing posterior teeth on masticatory performance and mastication predominance. METHODS: Thirty volunteers with normal dentition (control group), 30 patients with unilateral missing posterior teeth (unilateral group), a

Clinical and electromyographic study of lateral preference in mastication in patients with longstanding peripheral facial paralysis.

Peripheral facial paralysis (PFP) usually affects the facial nerve in part or in whole on one side of the face. Most patients with acute PFP find it difficult to chew on the paralyzed side, especially due to compromised buccinator function. In addition, the sagging of the ipsilateral lip commissure tends to compromise lip competence. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of long-standing PFP upon mastication, relating to clinical mastication sidedness as determined by clinical and electromyographic activity of the masseters. The study included 27 male and female subjects aged 16

Modulation of activity of spindle afferents recorded in trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus of rabbit during fictive mastication.

1. These experiments were based on the findings that antidromic firing is observed in first-order sensory afferents during fictive locomotion and were designed to test the hypothesis that a similar central modulation of afferent discharge occurs during mastication. To do this, spindle afferents were recorded in the trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus (Mes V) of anesthetized and paralyzed rabbits during fictive mastication. The cortical masticatory area was stimulated to induce mastication, and activity of the XIIth or the Vth nerves were recorded to monitor the masticatory motor rhythm. 2. Althou

Normative Data of Healthy Adults on the Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids (ToMaSS) with Domestic Crackers.

Understanding masticatory performance holds significance in diagnosing dysphagia and monitoring outcomes of interventions targeting primarily the oral preparatory phase of swallowing. The Test of Mastication and Swallowing Solids (ToMaSS) is a validated quantitative tool that clinically evaluates mastication and ingestion of solid food. Previous studies established normative values for commercially available crackers across countries. The current study aimed to provide local normative data using commercially available cracker in the healthy Chinese Asian population. 268 participants (21 to 95

A biomimetic hybrid soft/rigid robotic masticator simulating Oral processing of solid foods.

Promoting healthy ageing becomes increasingly crucial with the growth in both the size and the proportion of older people in the worldwide population. In vitro models are advancing dietary solutions for older adults by enhancing food development and understanding the effect of masticatory impairments in food oral processing. However, current masticatory simulators lack replication of tongue biomechanics, critical for food manipulation and bolus formation. This study introduces a novel Biomimetic Hybrid Soft/Rigid Robotic Masticator (BioSRM), combining soft and rigid-bodied robotics to simulate

Bilateral treatment of the masseter with botulinum toxin: Consequences for mastication, muscle force and the mandibular condyle.

BACKGROUND: Clinical use of botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) in masticatory muscles is usually bilateral, but most studies on the functional consequences of BoNT treatment have used unilaterally treated animals. OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that bilateral BoNT treatment of the rabbit masseter hampers mastication and to assess its effects on bone density of the mandibular condyles. METHODS: Ten 5-month-old female rabbits received injections of BoNT into both masseter muscles and nine sham animals received saline. Body weight, incisor bite force during masseter tetany, and surface and fine-

Facial asymmetry with severe unilateral hypoplasia of the muscles of mastication: a report of clinical and electromyographic findings.

Mild degrees of asymmetry of the human body have been recognised both by classical sculptors and more recently by anatomists as both normal and widely occurring. Morphologic asymmetries of the face of a more severe nature are, however, quite rare. When such deformities occur, both the hard and soft tissues may be involved and the abnormality may be acquired as a result of trauma, infection, neoplasia or surgery or be of a developmental origin as in the syndromes affecting the first pharyngeal arch. Developmental asymmetries of the jaws may also arise as a result of unilateral disruption of man
