THE PROBLEM OF CO-DEPENDENCE AMONG HIV-INFECTED DRUG-ADDICTED FAMILY MEMBERS.

This paper is dedicated to the study of clinical-psychopathological manifestations of co-dependence in the families of HIV-infected injecting drug users and to finding out the structure of these manifestations and how often they happen, as well as the evaluation of the role of hereditary factors in the formation of co-dependence among those who are married to HIV-infected injecting drug users. It has been established that the specificity of genealogies of patients with co-dependence is confirmed by the following factors: high frequency of mental and behavioral disorders caused by alcohol abuse

Brains, brawn, and beauty: The complementary roles of intelligence and physical aggression in attracting sexual partners.

The current study compared physical aggression to factors affecting socioeconomic status in the accumulation of sex partners over the life course. Our data sample was drawn from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (men, n = 5,636; women, n = 6,787). Participants were examined in terms of the number of lifetime sex partners they reported, nonrelationship partners, cheating or infidelity, and concurrent relationships. Intelligence and physical violence emerged as being especially likely to boost sex partner accumulation for the number of lifetime sex partners and nonrel

Crystalloids in the excretory ducts of the accessory submandibular gland of the long-winged bat, Miniopterus magnator.

Cytoplasmic crystalloids are abundant in the excretory ducts of the accessory submandibular gland of the long-winged bat, Miniopterus magnator. The crystalloids, which always lack a membranous enclosure, may have an intricate silhouette. They consist of parallel linear densities with a 12.5 nm periodicity. These densities actually may be thin-walled tubules. In some crystalloids, intersecting subcrystalloids produce a complex pattern of decussate densities. In a few rare instances, continuities were detected between a crystalloid and a smooth-surfaced cisternal element. In other mammalian spec

Environment-Dependent Sexual Selection: Bateman's Parameters under Varying Levels of Food Availability.

Sexual selection is a potent evolutionary force that has been shown to vary in strength and direction depending on demographic factors such as density and sex ratio. However, the effect of other environmental factors on the mode of sexual selection remains largely unexplored. Here, we tested experimentally how food restriction affects the potential for sexual selection in the male and the female sex function of the simultaneously hermaphroditic freshwater snail Physa acuta. We manipulated food availability and compared Bateman's metrics of sexual selection between groups of five well-fed and f

Development of affinity to the stockperson in lambs from two breeds.

The interactions between genetic and environmental factors on the development of lamb affinity to humans was assessed on 48 animals from two breeds (Gentile di Puglia and Comisana) and two treatments (Gentled and Not Gentled) producing 4 groups (GPg, GPng, Cg, Cng, respectively). The Gentile di Puglia and Comisana gentled animals were subjected to a period of training consisting of gently handling each lamb for 5 min three times a day for the first week and then twice a week for three additional weeks. The gentling procedure included both tactile and visual/auditory interactions. At 30-32 days

Genetic transmission of reading ability.

Reading is the processing of written language. Family resemblance for reading (dis)ability might be due to transmission of a genetic liability or due to family environment, including cultural transmission from parents to offspring. Familial-risk studies exploring neurobehavioral precursors for dyslexia and twin studies can only speak to some of these issues, but a combined twin-family study can resolve the nature of the transmitted risk. Word-reading fluency scores of 1100 participants from 431 families (with twins, siblings and their parents) were analyzed to estimate genetic and environmenta

Wolbachia infection and expression of cytoplasmic incompatibility in Armigeres subalbatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Polymerase chain reaction screening revealed that Armigeres subalbatus (Coquillett), a vector of filariasis, was infected with the intracellular bacteria Wolbachia. Laboratory crosses between infected males and uninfected females resulted in less than half the number of offspring than control crosses between uninfected individuals when young (2- to 3-d-old) males were used in the cross. However, imcompatibility was lost when old (14- to 17-d-old) males were used. Field-collected females did not show detectable cytoplasmic incompatibility, and this may be because of the age at which males mate

A defect in dystrophin causes a novel porcine stress syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Losses of slaughter-weight pigs due to transport stress are both welfare and economic concerns to pork producers. Historically, the HAL-1843 mutation in ryanodine receptor 1 was considered responsible for most of the losses; however, DNA testing has effectively eliminated this mutation from commercial herds. We identified two sibling barrows in the USMARC swine herd that died from apparent symptoms of a stress syndrome after transport at 12 weeks of age. The symptoms included open-mouth breathing, skin discoloration, vocalization and loss of mobility. RESULTS: We repeated the orig

Frequent transitions in mating-type locus chromosomal organization in Malassezia and early steps in sexual reproduction.

UNLABELLED: Fungi in the basidiomycete genus Malassezia are the most prevalent eukaryotic microbes resident on the skin of human and other warm-blooded animals and have been implicated in skin diseases and systemic disorders. Analysis of Malassezia genomes revealed that key adaptations to the skin microenvironment have a direct genomic basis, and the identification of mating/meiotic genes suggests a capacity to reproduce sexually, even though no sexual cycle has yet been observed. In contrast to other bipolar or tetrapolar basidiomycetes that have either two linked mating-type-determining ( MA

Effects of neurosteroid actions at N-methyl-D-aspartate and GABA A receptors in the midbrain ventral tegmental area for anxiety-like and mating behavior of female rats.

RATIONALE: In the midbrain ventral tegmental area (VTA), actions of neurosteroids, such as the progesterone metabolite, 5α-pregnan-3α-ol-20-one (3α,5α-THP), can facilitate mating and influence stress-related processes. Some actions of 3α,5α-THP may occur via positive modulation of GABA(A) receptors (GBRs), or negative modulation of N-methyl-D: -aspartate receptors (NMDARs), to influence anxiety-like behavior; but this is not known. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the role that neurosteroids and stress factors play on intra-VTA NMDAR- and/or GBR-mediated anxiety-like and mating behavior. METHO

Evaluation of breeding objectives, breeding practices and reproductive performance of indigenous dairy cows in selected districts of Kaffa Zone, South West Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Breeding objectives are designed to achieve targeted dairy cow production goals, which can be affected by production type, farmer preferences, environmental factors and genetic factors individually or in combination. Breeding practices, such as both controlled and uncontrolled, and artificial insemination (AI) are the tools used to obtain the desired breeding objectives. The lower reproductive performance of indigenous dairy cows affects the total milk production and calf crops that are produced during their lifetime. Designing appropriate breeding objectives and breeding practices

Adenosine 3',5'-phosphate phosphodiesterase and pheromone response in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Theophylline, aminophylline, and isobutylmethylxanthine, compounds reported to be inhibitors of adenosine 3',5'-phosphate (cAMP) phosphodiesterase, prevented the alpha-factor-induced cell cycle arrest of Saccharomyces cerevisiae a cells. To determine whether the in vivo effect of these methylxanthines on yeast pheromone response was related to their known biochemical mode of action, two assays for cAMP phosphodiesterase based on affinity of the product of the reaction (5'-AMP) for boronate groups were developed and were used to monitor the activity of the low Km cAMP phosphodiesterase present

Unexpected male choosiness: Female aggressiveness as a criterion for mate choice preference in the red swamp crayfish.

As a core manifestation of sexual selection, mate choice preference has traditionally been studied primarily in the context of female assessment and selection of male traits, whereas active male choice for female phenotypic characteristics remains rarely reported in crustaceans. Among the various factors influencing mate choice outcomes, animal personality types-particularly aggressiveness-serve as key behavioural indicators of an individual's competitive ability and physiological condition. Here, using the red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), we investigated whether female aggressiveness

Sex-specific neurons instruct sexually dimorphic neurite branching via Netrin signaling in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Animals often exhibit sexually dimorphic behavior in mating, learning, and decision-making. These sexual dimorphisms arise due to sex differences in the structure and function of neural circuits, but how sexually dimorphic neural circuits are established remains less understood. In the nematode C. elegans, both males and hermaphrodites possess a set of sex-shared neurons with sexually dimorphic features that contribute to the observed sex differences in neural connectivity. Here, we focused on the motor neuron preanal cell body dorsal axon B (PDB) to investigate the molecular mechanism underly

Contrasting demographic history and population structure in Capsella rubella and Capsella grandiflora, two closely related species with different mating systems.

Both mating system and population history can have large impacts on genetic diversity and population structure. Here, we use multilocus sequence data to investigate how these factors impact two closely related Brassicaceae species: the selfing Capsella rubella and the outcrossing C. grandiflora. To do this, we have sequenced 16 loci in approximately 70 individuals from 7 populations of each species. Patterns of population structure differ strongly between the two species. In C. grandiflora, we observe an isolation-by-distance pattern and identify three clearly delineated genetic groups. In C.

Effects of sensory stimuli on the incidence of fetal resorption in a murine model of spontaneous abortion: the presence of an alien male and postimplantation embryo survival.

Pregnancy outcome may be altered by both genetic and environmental factors. The mating of CBA/J female mice with DBA/2 males normally results in pregnancies characterized by a relatively high incidence of early embryo compared with most other syngeneic or allogeneic matings. This study addressed the role of normal laboratory stress in the induction of early embryo loss. The previously studied 'Bruce effect' describes the total loss of preimplantation embryos (pregnancy block) that is apparently caused by the stress induced by the presence of an alien male and mediated by neuroimmunological eff

Novel Biological Functions of the NsdC Transcription Factor in Aspergillus fumigatus.

The fungal zinc finger transcription factor NsdC is named after, and is best known for, its essential role in sexual reproduction (never in sexual development). In previous studies with Aspergillus nidulans, it was also shown to have roles in promotion of vegetative growth and suppression of asexual conidiation. In this study, the function of the nsdC homologue in the opportunistic human pathogen A. fumigatus was investigated. NsdC was again found to be essential for sexual development, with deletion of the nsdC gene in both MAT1-1 and MAT1-2 mating partners of a cross leading to complete loss

All Features Great and Small-the Potential Roles of the Baculum and Penile Spines in Mammals.

Mammalian penises are morphologically diverse, including a highly variable and taxonomically informative baculum (os penis), and variable penile spines, both of which are possessed by many-but not all-species. To understand the evolution of genital morphologies, as well as the potential role of both the baculum, and penile spines that directly interact with female reproductive tract, we undertook a comparative study of male penile spines and their relationship with the baculum across all mammalian orders. Specifically, we investigated several factors that may explain the presence or absence of

[The method of total heminephroureterectomy--application of mucolysis].

Double ureters are not a rare anomaly. In the great majority of duplex-ureter systems, both components are functionally normal. Some may present medical problems such as abdominal cystic masses and recurrent urinary tract infections, even from the newborn period. The choice of the best method of the operation depends on residual renal function, the form of ureters, the shape and the position of the ureter orifice, and other factors. So, there are many methods by which to operate on duplex-ureter systems. Total heminephroureterectomy may be the best method of choice, if the duplex-ureter portio
