The buccofacial wall of maxillary sinus: an anatomical consideration for sinus augmentation.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to quantify the thickness of the buccofacial wall of the maxillary sinus where sinus augmentations are often performed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen sites located 15 and 20 mm superior to the anatomical cervical line (named as groups H15 and H20, respectively) and along the long axes of the mid and the interproximal of two premolars and two molars were measured from 74 Korean hemiface cadavers. RESULTS: The buccofacial wall of the maxillary sinus was thinnest at the area between the maxillary second premolar and first molar in groups H15 and H20. The lowest mean

Enophthalmos due to atelectasis of the maxillary sinus: silent sinus syndrome.

Silent sinus syndrome is a clinical entity with the constellation of progressive enophthalmos and hypoglobus due to gradual collapse of the orbital floor with opacification of the maxillary sinus, in the presence of subclinical maxillary sinusitis. It occurs secondary to maxillary sinus hypoventilation due to obstruction of the ostiomeatal unit. In this paper, a 35-year-old woman with a complaint of asymmetry in her left eye and denting of upper eyelid was reported. In the left eye, upper sulcus was deepened and there was 3-mm hypoglobus. There was no diplopia or restriction of eye movements i

The silent sinus syndrome: maxillary sinus atelectasis with enophthalmos and hypoglobus.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The silent sinus syndrome is a rare clinical entity of spontaneous enophthalmos and hypoglobus caused by an alteration of the normal orbital architecture and function from maxillary sinus collapse in the setting of chronic sinusitis. RECENT FINDINGS: The maxillary sinus collapse appears to result from the development of negative sinus pressure from an acquired obstruction of the maxillary sinus outflow. Patients most often present with symptoms relating to enophthalmos, although few report any symptoms of sinus disease. SUMMARY: Characteristic radiographic features of the

Peripheral Osteoma of the Maxillary Sinus in a Patient Planned for Sinus Augmentation.

Osteomas are slow-growing benign tumors that almost exclusively occur in the craniofacial region and more often in the ethmoid air cells. When they occasionally occur in the maxillary sinuses, they can interfere with dental procedures like sinus augmentation. This study presents the case of a 59-year-old male patient who was treated for sinus augmentation of the left maxillary sinus. During the treatment planning phase, a peripheral osteoma was identified with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as an incidental finding without any clinical signs or symptoms. The sinus augmentation procedure

Clinical anatomy of the maxillary sinus: application to sinus floor augmentation.

The anatomy of the maxillary sinus, especially its vascular anatomy, and its relationships with the teeth and alveolar processes have been well documented. The development of cone-beam computed tomography has resulted in dentists being more familiar with maxillary sinus floor augmentation procedures. This paper aims to revisit the classic anatomy of the maxillary sinus and review the newly published literature in order to help dentists diagnose in more detail and perform safer surgery of the maxillary sinus.

Endoscopic sinus surgery for the treatment of organized hematoma of the maxillary sinus.

Organized hematoma is a benign and non-neoplastic lesion, however, differential diagnosis from neoplastic diseases is always problematic, and patients are often forced to sustain excessive surgical invasion. We retrospectively studied the characteristics of imaging findings of organized hematoma of the maxillary sinus, and estimated the validity and effectiveness of endoscopic sinus surgery for the treatment of this disease. Three patients (2 men and a woman, ranging in age from 50 to 62 years) with organized hematoma of the maxillary sinus who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery were retrospec

[Enophthalmos following radical operation of the maxillary sinus and ethmoidal sinus].

Enophthalmos is usually a consequence of orbital trauma resulting in a blowout fracture of the orbital floor. We report here the case of a 35-year-old male who had a radical operation of the maxillary sinus and the ethmoidal sinus, and 2 months after the operation, developed spontaneous enophthalmos and ocular pain. The left orbit was enophthalmic by 5mm according to Hertel enophthalmometry. Surgical correction was performed under general anesthesia. The left orbit was explored through a transcutaneous incision of the left lower lid which revealed marked periosteal adhesions and absence of the

Biomechanical analysis of the maxillary sinus floor membrane during internal sinus floor elevation with implants at different angles of the maxillary sinus angles.

OBJECTIVE: This study analyzed and compared the biomechanical properties of maxillary sinus floor mucosa with implants at three different maxillary sinus angles during a modified internal sinus floor elevation procedure. METHODS: 3D reconstruction of the implant, maxillary sinus bone, and membrane were performed. The maxillary sinus model was set at three different angles. Two internal maxillary sinus elevation models were established, and finite element analysis was used to simulate the modified maxillary sinus elevation process. The implant was elevated to 10 mm at three maxillary sinus ang

Axial Triangle of the Maxillary Sinus, and its Surgical Implication With the Position of Maxillary Sinus Septa During Sinus Floor Elevation: A CBCT Analysis.

The aim of this study was to measure the convexity of the lateral wall of the maxillary (Mx) sinus and identify the locational distribution of antral septa in relation to the zygomaticomaxillary buttress (ZMB), in order to suggest another anatomical consideration and surgical modification of sinus floor elevation procedures. This study was designed as a cross-sectional study, and a total of 134 patients and 161 sinuses containing edentulous alveolar ridges were analyzed. The angle between the anterior and lateral walls of the Mx sinus (lateral sinus angle [LSA]), and the angle between the midp

Angiosarcoma of the Maxillary Sinus: A Case Report.

Angiosarcoma can be defined as a malignant neoplasm arising from the lining of the blood and lymphatic vessels, including the endothelial cells. It can occur in any body part, such as blood vessels, skin, liver, and breast. Its incidence varies based on the site. There are different underlying etiologies associated with the incidence of angiosarcoma. Clinical presentation depends on the site of origin. Angiosarcoma of the sinus or nasal openings can be observed as a tissue mass, lesions, obstructed nasal cavity, facial swelling, proptosis, anosmia, nasal discharge, and epistaxis. These are rar

Retained Dental Implant in the Maxillary Sinus.

Implant dentistry has become a popularized means of replacing damaged or missing teeth. Although it has become common practice, there are accounts of implants displacing into surrounding structures, commonly the maxillary sinus. We present the case of a 54-year-old man who presented with chronic left sided pain and pressure found to be secondary to a displaced implant obstructing the left maxillary outflow sinus tract. A systematic review was conducted to assess the current management and treatment options for dental implants displaced into the maxillary sinus. Functional endoscopic sinus surg

Acoustic drug delivery to the maxillary sinus.

Acoustic drug delivery (ADD) is an innovative method for drug delivery to the nose and paranasal sinuses and can be used to treat chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). The underlying mechanism of ADD is based on the oscillatory exchange of air between the nasal cavity (NC) and the maxillary sinus (MS) through the ostium, which assists with the transfer of the drug particles from the NC to the sinuses. This study aims to examine the efficacy of ADD for drug delivery to the MS using an acoustic wave applied to nebulised aerosols entering the nostril. Here, the effect of acoustic frequency, amplitude, an

Management of the neck in maxillary sinus carcinomas.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To discuss and review the role for elective treatment of the neck in maxillary squamous cell carcinoma. Improvements in survival have been seen because of improved local therapies and control; therefore, the treatment of the neck has become a topic of debate. RECENT FINDINGS: The risk of occult metastases in neck nodes is higher for T3-4 tumors. The rate of nodal relapse in the N0 neck without elective treatment is 8-15%. With elective irradiation the nodal relapse rate decreases. However, most nodal relapses are accompanied by local failure or distant disease. Local failur
