Giant Maxillary Antral Mucocele Consequent To Allergic Fungal Sinusitis.

UNLABELLED: The aroma compositions and essential oil contents extracted from small cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum Maton) dried at three temperatures using a hot air convective dryer was studied by chromatographic methods. The major compounds in the dried samples were 1,8-cineole (7.23-11.76%) and α-Terpinyl acetate (61.65-68.19%) that were responsible for the specific aroma. The extracted essential oil was found to be majorly composed of alkenes (33-42%), alcohols (18-30%) and esters (18-22%) with acids, alkyls and ketones. The changes in esters and alcohols with drying time were more signific

Diagnosis and Management of Maxillary Sinusitis of Endodontic Origin.

The anatomic proximity of maxillary posterior teeth to the maxillary sinus provides a natural conduit for the spread of dental pathology into the maxillary sinus. This diffusion results in the development of sinus disease attributable to endodontic pathology, and is termed "maxillary sinusitis of endodontic origin" (MSEO). Ultimately, suspicion of odontogenic causes of sinus disease should come as a relief to the provider and patient alike as the conditions are very treatable by noninvasive means with high expected success. This article reviews the diagnosis and management of odontogenic sinus

Expert consensus on odontogenic maxillary sinusitis multi-disciplinary treatment.

Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (OMS) is a subtype of maxillary sinusitis (MS). It is actually inflammation of the maxillary sinus that secondary to adjacent infectious maxillary dental lesion. Due to the lack of unique clinical features, OMS is difficult to distinguish from other types of rhinosinusitis. Besides, the characteristic infectious pathogeny of OMS makes it is resistant to conventional therapies of rhinosinusitis. Its current diagnosis and treatment are thus facing great difficulties. The multi-disciplinary cooperation between otolaryngologists and dentists is absolutely urgent to

Cavernous Sinus Syndrome Caused by Noninvasive Fungal Maxillary Sinusitis.

It is rare that cavernous sinus complications are caused by maxillary sinus lesions because the locations of these lesions are some distant from each other. The authors describe an unusual presentation that the primary lesion was located in the maxillary sinus and triggered cavernous sinus syndrome and optic nerve symptoms. The most likely possibility was that the infection traveled retrograde along the vascular plexus. Removal of maxillary sinus lesions and establishment ventilation may achieve source control.

Near-Infrared Optical Imaging for Diagnosis of Maxillary Sinusitis.

Computed tomography (CT) is the current gold standard imaging for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) but is limited by cost, risk of radiation, and difficulty of being performed in the typical outpatient primary care setting. We describe the novel use of a low-cost, handheld technology to deliver an intraoral near-infrared (NIR) wavelength light to optically image the maxillary sinuses. Digital images were collected for subjects presenting with sinus disease using an intraoral NIR light source for transillumination of the maxillary sinuses, captured by a modified digital single-lens reflex camera. Maxillary odontogenic sinusitis, complicated with cerebral abscess--case report.

Maxillary sinus inflammation, when untreated or incorrectly treated, may extend locoregionally, the remaining paranasal sinuses being the first affected anatomical structures. This is why the understanding of the inflammatory pathology of the maxillary sinus, and particularly of the complications it can generate, is extremely important. The purpose of this presentation is to point out that inflammations of the paranasal sinuses are susceptible to develop complications in certain conditions and threaten the patient's life due to the proximity of vital structures. This is the case of a 16 years

Clinical aspects of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis: a case series.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (OMS) is unknown. Failure to address dental pathology causing sinusitis can lead to failure of medical and surgical treatments. The purpose of this article is to present an OMS patient series. METHODS: Retrospective review of prospectively accrued patients. Sinusitis guidelines were reviewed for OMS incidence and management. The clinical aspects of OMS in 21 patients diagnosed by sinus computed tomography (CT) scan over the last 30 months were assessed. RESULTS: In our series the mean age was 53 years (range, 21-70 years), mean dur

[Unilateral maxillary sinusitis: a cavernous haemangioma with bone destruction].

Haemangioma originating in the paranasal sinuses are a rare entity. In the case of unilateral sinusitis the differential diagnosis should include tumors. The following case of a 30-year-old female patient with a therapy-resistant sinusitis showed bone destruction and a maxillary shadow on computed tomography. The histological exam resulted in a cavernous haemangioma.

Bacteriology of chronic maxillary sinusitis associated with nasal polyposis.

Aspirates from 48 chronically inflamed maxillary sinuses from patients who had nasal polyposis were processed for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Bacterial growth was present in 46 (96%) specimens. Aerobic or facultative bacteria were present in 6 (13%) specimens, anaerobic bacteria alone in 18 (39%), and mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in 22 (48%). There were 110 bacterial isolates (2.4 per specimen). Thirty-nine of the isolates were aerobic or facultative organisms (0.85 per specimen). The predominant aerobic or facultative organisms were: Staphylococcus aureus, microaerophilic streptoc

Validity of ultrasonography in diagnosis of acute maxillary sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Accurate diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis is difficult on the basis of clinical examination only because the signs and symptoms of sinusitis are nonspecific. A simple, rapid, and readily available method for diagnosing maxillary sinusitis in primary care would increase the accuracy of the diagnoses and thus reduce unnecessary antibiotic treatment. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the validity of ultrasonography compared with radiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detection of maxillary sinusitis. DESIGN: Ultrasonography and plain-film radiography of the paranasal sinuses we

Ultrasonography versus radiography in the diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis.

Water's view plain film radiography was compared with ultrasonography in the diagnosis of acute maxillary sinusitis in 50 patients at the Radiology Department of King Hussein Medical Centre in Jordan with clinical diagnosis of acute sinusitis. Ultrasound showed 100% concordance with plain radiographs reported as showing complete opacifications or an air fluid level, the only reliable plain film indicator of an inflamed antrum. We conclude that ultrasonography, which is non-ionizing, can provide an alternative to plain radiography in the initial investigation of maxillary sinusitis.

Asymptomatic posterior orbital cellulitis resulting from ethmoid/maxillary sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Although vision-threatening sinusitis complications are not uncommon, an unusual case of asymptomatic posterior orbital cellulitis resulting from maxillary and ethmoidal sinus infection is presented. METHODS, RESULTS: An 11-year-old girl was brought to us for a routine optometric examination, reporting only blurred distance vision. A mild afferent pupillary defect was the key to detection and diagnosis of a vision-threatening posterior orbital cellulitis. CONCLUSIONS: A literature review of relevant anatomic and pathologic mechanisms, as well as radiologic recommendations, follow

Antimicrobial treatment in acute maxillary sinusitis: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to assess which antibiotic is most effective in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis in otherwise healthy adults and adolescents, and which has the fewest side effects. DESIGN: To assess the short-term effects of antimicrobial treatments, a meta-analysis was performed using Mantel-Haenszel procedures on 16 comparative, randomized studies with a total number of 3358 patients. No placebo-controlled studies were available. Antimicrobial treatments were categorized according to type, spectrum, beta-lactamase inhibition, and bactericidal effect. Outcome

[Clinical criteria for acute maxillary sinusitis in general practice].

The purpose of the investigation was to examine the diagnostic value of various symptoms, clinical findings, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) in acute maxillary sinusitis using the aspiration of purulent or mucopurulent from the sinus of a patient with a pathological CT-scanning as the golden standard. Of 174 patients with suspected acute maxillary sinusitis seen in general practice we found 70% to have a pathological CT-scanning and 53% to have pus or mucous pus in the sinus aspirate. Only the ESR and CRP level were found to be significantly and independ
