A Narrative Review of u-HA/PLLA, a Bioactive Resorbable Reconstruction Material: Applications in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

The advent of bioresorbable materials to overcome limitations and replace traditional bone-reconstruction titanium-plate systems for bone fixation, thus achieving greater efficiency and safety in medical and dental applications, has ushered in a new era in biomaterial development. Because of its bioactive osteoconductive ability and biocompatibility, the forged composite of uncalcined/unsintered hydroxyapatite and poly L-lactic acid (u-HA/PLLA) has attracted considerable interest from researchers in bone tissue engineering, as well as from clinicians, particularly for applications in maxillofa

Podosomal proteins as causes of human syndromes: a role in craniofacial development?

Podosomes and invadopodia are actin-rich protrusions of the plasma membrane important for matrix degradation and cell migration. Most of the information in this field has been obtained in cancer cells, where the presence of invadopodia has been related to increased invasiveness and metastatic potential. The importance of the related podosome structure in other pathological or physiological processes that require cell invasion is relatively unexplored. Recent evidence indicates that essential components of podosomes are responsible for several human syndromes, some of which are characterized by

Prenatal sagittal growth of the osseous components of the human palate.

The human osseous palate consists of the palatine processes of the maxillary bone anterior to the transverse palatine suture and the horizontal processes of the palatine bone posterior to the suture. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the sagittal growth of these different bone components bordering the transverse palatine suture. The material comprised radiographs of cranial midsagittal tissue blocks from 44 human fetal specimens obtained by legally approved abortions. Gestational age (GA) ranged from 10 to 26 weeks and crown-rump lengths (CRLs) from 50 to 240 mm. The lengths of t

China experts' consensus on preventive and interceptive orthodontic treatments of malocclusions of children.

Malocclusion is one of the three most common oral diseases reported by World Health Organization(WHO). In China, its incidence rate is rising. Malocclusion seriously affects the dental and maxillofacial function, facial appearance and growth development of nearly 260 million children in China, and what is more, it affects their physical and mental health development. Malocclusion occurrence is related to genetic and environmental factors. Early treatment of malocclusion can create a good dental and maxillofacial development environment, correct abnormal growth and control the adverse effects o

Assessment of average cephalometric values in late mixed dentition of children between 11 and 13 years of age - An observational study.

BACKGROUND: A comprehensive understanding of craniofacial growth and development is crucial for all dentists. Variability is a key principle in studying growth patterns. Cephalometrics, as a morphological diagnostic tool, quantitatively expresses this variability and plays a vital role in assessing craniofacial growth and development. AIMS: This study aims to determine cephalometric principles (skeletal and dental) for the Indore population of India and to establish cephalometric values for children in the late mixed dentition stage. SETTING AND DESIGN: An observational study was performed i

Complications of pediatric facial fractures.

Pediatric facial fractures account for only 5% of all facial fractures, with even a much lower incidence in children younger than 5 years (1%-1.5%). The evolution of principles in the management of pediatric facial fractures and the differences in management between adult and pediatric patients have been well documented in the literature. Pediatric facial fracture management presents unique challenges because it might affect growth in the area specific to the trauma segment. Children are, in several ways, at a regenerative advantage: greater osteogenic potential, faster healing rate, primary d

[Genetics and the dento-facial complex].

Recently mutations in single genes have been found to cause dentofacial deviations like hypodontia, cleft lip and palate, as well as some craniofacial malformation syndromes like Aperts/Crouzon syndromes, cleidocranial dysostosis... These findings may lead to an overestimation and oversimplification of the role of genes in our daily life. The "one gene, one disease" principle has been applied too often, while most complex human characteristics are determined by a large number of genes, each leading to an increased liability for a certain condition. Whether this condition is expressed or not de

Craniofacial development in rats with early resection of the zygomatic arch.

Eighty-two-day-old male Wistar rats were selected to study the pattern of craniofacial growth following resection of the zygomatic arches. Rats were divided into three groups: group I (n = 14), the control group; group II (n = 15), with unilateral resection of the zygomatic arch; and group III (n = 8), with bilateral resection. Direct dry skull and cephalometric measurements show increased facial projection and decreased transverse facial width on the side of the resected arch. If the results are extrapolated to the growth pattern of patients with the Treacher Collins syndrome, we can conclude
