Social determinants of health and maxillofacial injuries in children and adolescents victims of violence: A novel GIS-based modelling application.

BACKGROUND: Physical violence against children and adolescents comprises a serious public health problem and often results in oral and maxillofacial traumas. Social determinants may favour the occurrence of these events, but few studies have critically evaluated the interaction between social and geographical risk factors. AIMS: To investigate the spatiotemporal distribution of oral and maxillofacial traumas resulting from violence against children and adolescents through geostatistical techniques. METHODS: This study was an ecological analysis of cases of trauma caused by violence against B

British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons' National Facial Injury Surveys: hard tissue facial injuries presenting to UK emergency departments.

The British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) and Saving Faces undertook two national prospective surveys 11 years apart. They recorded the facial injuries treated in UK emergency departments and collected data on 14872 patients. In this paper, which aims to act as a feasibility study for a third national survey of facial injuries, we have reviewed hard-tissue injuries and specifically focused on temporal changes in their morphology. The two sets of directly comparable, categorical, unpaired, cross-sectional data were evaluated independently for statistical significance. I

ROC-Derived Age Threshold, Injury Mechanisms, and Fracture Patterns Associated With Severe Head and Neck Injury in Patients With Maxillofacial Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of patients at risk of severe head and neck injury following maxillofacial fractures is essential for clinical management. However, chronological age alone may not reflect injury severity or physiological vulnerability. This study aimed to identify an age threshold and evaluate injury mechanisms and fracture patterns associated with severe head and neck injury in patients with maxillofacial fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 712 patients with maxillofacial fractures. Severe head and neck injury was defined as an Abbreviated Injury Sc

Timing of maxillofacial-oral injuries in an individual of the ancient city of Herculaneum (79 AD, Naples, Italy): a case report.

BACKGROUND: This study is based on the skeletal remains of an adult female from the ancient city of Herculaneum (Naples, Italy), who was a victim of the eruption of the nearby Vesuvius Volcano on 24-25 August, AD 79. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Examination of the maxillofacial region revealed evidence of unilateral condylar fracture and dislocation, as well as traumatic dental injuries. The injuries observed might have been the consequence of a direct blow to the mental region that was transmitted in a direction that raised the mandible, causing an indirect fracture in the right condylar neck whe

The pattern and aetiology of maxillofacial injuries in Greece. A retrospective study of 25 years and a comparison with other countries.

In comparison with other countries, Greece demonstrates a high incidence of road traffic accidents (RTA's). Most are the result of violation of the highway code. Violence as a causative agent of fractures of the facial skeleton is still a minor factor in comparison with other countries. Most of the people involved are young. In a 25-year period we have treated 6,847 fractures of the facial skeleton. Fractures of the mandibular condyle, the genial symphysis and the zygomatico-maxillary complex were the most numerous. 25% of the patients were women and 75% men. 56% were treated conservatively; a

Public Perspectives of Oral and Maxillofacial Injuries Related to Domestic Abuse Experiences and Help-Seeking Barriers: Web Scraping of Reddit Posts.

BACKGROUND: Domestic abuse (DA) frequently results in injuries to the head, neck, and orofacial regions. Despite the visibility of these injuries, many survivors do not access formal medical or dental care because of fear, stigma, or systemic barriers. Reddit, an anonymous online platform, offers a unique opportunity to examine unfiltered victims/survivors' narratives shared in public forums. The aim of this study was to explore how DA, particularly its physical, psychological, and social impacts, was represented, perceived, and discussed on Reddit. Special attention was given to posts describ

The effect of lockdown during SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on maxillofacial injuries in a level I trauma centre: a comparative study.

INTRODUCTION: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic forced many governments to impose nation-wide lockdowns. Government legislation forced limited travel on the population with restrictions on the normal way of life to limit spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The aim of this study is to explore the effects of lockdown on the presentation of maxillofacial trauma in a level I trauma centre. METHODS: Comparative analysis was carried out using prospective and retrospective review of all consecutive patients admitted with any maxillofacial fracture in the lockdown period between 15th March and 15th June 2020 with

Causes and incidence of maxillofacial injuries in India: 12-year retrospective study of 4437 patients in a tertiary hospital in Gujarat.

Maxillofacial injuries are unique because of the anatomical complexity of the area and their associated psychological effects. An understanding of the epidemiology of these injuries is important if we are to develop preventive measures, increase the efficiency and delivery of health services, improve the skills of healthcare providers, and better distribute resources. We retrospectively evaluated data on 4455 patients (aged between 3 and 84 years) who presented with maxillofacial injuries to a tertiary referral hospital in Ahmedabad, India, between 1 January 1999 and 31 January 2010. Of these,

Systemic injury extension and mechanism of trauma determine ICU admission in CT-confirmed maxillofacial fractures.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether intensive care unit (ICU) admission in CT-confirmed maxillofacial trauma is primarily associated with facial fracture burden or with radiologically defined systemic injury extension. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 1,511 patients with CT-confirmed maxillofacial fractures treated at a tertiary trauma center. Injury mechanism, fracture multiplicity (mFISS-face), and systemic extension (cranial and thoracic involvement) were assessed. Multivariable Firth penalized logistic regression was performed to identify independent predictors of ICU admission.

Pattern of associated brain injury in maxillofacial trauma: a retrospective study from a high-volume centre.

The incidence of head injury in maxillofacial trauma patients varies widely in the literature. A good understanding of the patterns of association between these injuries would aid in efficient multidisciplinary treatment. The aim of this study therefore was to understand the associations between head injury and facial trauma by retrospectively analysing the records of patients seen at a tertiary care trauma centre. Demographic data were also described. Records of 4350 facial trauma patients over a five-year period were reviewed. A total of 3564 (81.9%) patients were victims of motor vehicle ac
