Mass media effect on vaccines uptake during silent polio outbreak.

BACKGROUND: During 2013, isolation of a wild type 1 poliovirus from routine sewage sample in Israel, led to a national OPV campaign. During this period, there was a constant cover of the outbreak by the mass media. AIMS: To investigate the association of media exposure and OPV and non-OPV vaccines uptake during the 2013 silent polio outbreak in Israel. METHODS: We received data on daily immunization rates during the outbreak period from the Ministry of Health (MoH). We conducted a multivariable time trend analysis to assess the association between daily media exposure and vaccines uptake. An

Atherosclerotic process in taxi drivers occupationally exposed to air pollution and co-morbidities.

Consistent evidence has indicated that the exposure to environmental air pollution increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to evaluate the possible effects of occupational exposure to air pollution, especially to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and the influence of co-morbidities on the atherosclerotic process and inflammation. For that, biomarkers of exposure such as 1-hydroxypyrene urinary, oxidative damage and markers of cardiovascular risk were determined in plasma, serum and blood. In addition, inflammation models such as carotid intima-media thickness and

Subduing attitude polarization?

Researchers have sought to understand the effects of like-minded versus contrary news exposure on attitude polarization, which can be a threat to democracy. The online news environment offers opportunities for exposure to both types of news, albeit unequally. This study tests the effects of exposure to heterogeneous partisan news bundles (both like-minded and contrary news) on attitude polarization. Because media exposure can lead to bias, attitude polarization is tested as a direct and indirect effect via hostile media perceptions. Data in this study are from a between-subjects experimental d

Passive smoking and middle ear effusion among children in day care.

One hundred thirty-two children who attended a research day-care center were studied to determine whether passive tobacco smoke exposure was associated with an increased rate of otitis media with effusion or with an increased number of days with otitis media with effusion during the first 3 years of life. Based on preliminary studies, a serum cotinine concentration of greater than or equal to 2.5 ng/mL was considered indicative of exposure to tobacco smoke. Otitis media with effusion was diagnosed using pneumatic otoscopy by nurse practitioners and pediatricians who reviewed the children's hea

The association of television and radio with reproductive behavior.

This note analyzes the association between media exposure and reproductive behavior in 48 developing countries. A summary of part of a more extensive Demographic and Health Surveys report, it shows strong connections between media exposure and the use of modern contraception, the number of children desired, and recent fertility. Television viewing is particularly important; it is assumed to expose viewers to aspects of modern life that compete with traditional attitudes toward the family and is associated with greater use of modern contraceptive methods, with a desire for fewer children, and w

Iodine contrast prior to or during pregnancy and neonatal thyroid function: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Thyroid dysfunction is a known side effect of iodinated contrast media. There is some evidence to suggest that iodinated contrast media administered to pregnant women may cause thyroid dysfunction not only in themselves but also in their offspring. Here, we systematically evaluated literature on the use of iodinated contrast media prior to or during pregnancy on the offspring's thyroid function. DESIGN: Systematic review of published literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Relevant studies were identified by PubMed, EMBASE and The Cochrane Library up to June 5, 2020. All study designs,

A double-edged sword: unpacking the functional heterogeneity of mobile social media use and its differential associations with exercise identity and social-media-specific sedentary time among older adults.

BACKGROUND: As digital life prevails among older adults, this study investigates how mobile social media functions affect their exercise identity and social-media-specific sedentary time. METHODS: Using the S-O-R framework, a dual-path model was tested with SEM (AMOS 20.0) on data from 452 older adults in China. RESULTS: Overall, mobile social media functions were not significantly associated with exercise identity or social-media-specific sedentary time. However, specific functions showed divergent effects: information retrieval (Z = 6.06, 95% CI [0.14, 0.27]), online guidance (Z = 3.32, 95

Orthorexia nervosa and social media: A mixed-methods scoping review using a systematic methodology.

INTRODUCTION: Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is defined as a preoccupation with abiding by a self-perceived healthy diet resulting in pathological thought, behavior and emotion. Social media platforms may add to this preoccupation with healthy eating by offering accessible exposure to food and dieting information. Yet, the precise nature of the association between ON and exposure to social media remains underexplored. The aim is to explore the existing literature on the relationship between social media and ON in a scoping search and to synthesize the findings. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Sc

Fear of Missing out Serially Mediated by Social Media Use and Alcohol-Related Content on Alcohol Outcomes Among College Students: A Cross-Sectional Examination.

Fear of missing out (FoMO) is the apprehension that others may be having more rewarding experiences from which one is absent. A positive relationship between FoMO and social media related behaviors is well established. Limited studies have examined how FoMO may be associated with risky health behaviors, such as alcohol use. Risky alcohol use is a pervasive public health issue among college students, a population with high rates of alcohol consumption and alcohol-related consequences. Emerging studies have identified alcohol-related content (ARC) on social media may predict greater college drin

Instagram v. Reality: The Case for Regulating Adolescent Social Media Use.

In the span of just two decades, social media has transformed from a novel communication platform into an omnipresent force in modern life, fundamentally altering how we connect, communicate, and consume information. For adolescents born into this digital landscape, social media is not merely a tool but an integral component of identity formation, social development, and daily existence. Most teens ages thirteen to seventeen use social media daily, and over forty percent of Instagram's user base is under the age of twenty-two. Yet as platforms have evolved to capture and maintain user attentio

Parasocial Engagement With Social Media Influencers and Mental Health Outcomes: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Social media influencers occupy a pervasive role in billions of users' daily digital lives, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Audiences develop parasocial engagement with these figures, including parasocial relationships (PSRs) and parasocial interactions (PSIs). Despite growing concern about their mental health implications, no prior meta-analysis has quantitatively synthesized this evidence. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the associations between influencer-directed parasocial engagement and mental health outcomes, examine pr

Psychological Distress as a Mediator of the Association Between Racism-based Police Violence and Mental Health Help-Seeking Among Black and Hispanic Emerging Adults.

BACKGROUND: Racism-based police violence (RPV) exposure may influence psychological distress and mental health help-seeking, yet limited research has examined these relationships among Black and Hispanic emerging adults. This study evaluated whether psychological distress mediates associations between RPV exposure (direct, witnessed, and media-based) and mental health help-seeking. METHODS: Analyses were based on cross-sectional survey data collected between August and October 2023 using a national Qualtrics nonprobability panel (n = 878).
