Measles and Rubella Elimination Trends in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region, 2023-2024: Progress and Recent Epidemiological Shifts.

Background: Measles and rubella remain key indicators of immunization system performance and are central to the Immunization Agenda 2030 (IA2030). Disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have widened immunity gaps and accelerated resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases across multiple regions. This study assesses progress toward measles and rubella elimination in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) during 2023-2024. Methods: We conducted a retrospective descriptive analysis of measles and rubella surveillance data, WHO/UNICEF Estimates of National Immunization Coverage (WUENIC),

Phytochemical composition and synergistic antimicrobial effects of Rosmarinus officinalis essential oils during flowering in an arid mediterranean region.

Rosmarinus officinalis has attracted significant attention due to its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, largely attributed to its bioactive essential oils (EOs). Several studies indicate that the flowering period is crucial for harvesting rosemary's aerial parts for optimal EO extraction. However, its prolonged flowering period complicates the determination of an optimal harvest time, potentially affecting yield, chemical composition, and efficacy. This study provides, for the first time, a systematic month-by-month evaluation of EO yield, chemical composition, and synergistic antimicrobi

Cholera prevention, control strategies, challenges and World Health Organization initiatives in the Eastern Mediterranean Region: A narrative review.

The resurgence of cholera is presenting unusual challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), where it is considered endemic in nine-member states. The risk of a cholera outbreak spreading to non-endemic countries remains high. We discuss the regional trends of cholera, regional burden, and challenges with a focus on World Health Organization (WHO) initiatives in the region that could be useful in preventing and controlling the disease in similar contexts. Despite significant progress in the control of cholera worldwide, the disease continues to be a major public health problem across

Longitudinal association of dietary fat intake with cardiovascular events in a prospective cohort study in Eastern Mediterranean region.

We examined the association of dietary fats intake with the 13-year risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among Iranian population. Totally 5432 participants of Isfahan Cohort Study (ICS) aged ≥ 35 years were included in the current study. The frequency of dietary fats including hydrogenated vegetables oil (HVO), non-hydrogenated vegetables oil (nHVO), olive oil, ghee, and animal fats during the preceding year were assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire. After adjustment for potential confounders, individuals in the top quartile of HVO tended to have 68% greater risk for myocar

Incidence of antiviral drug resistance markers among human influenza A viruses in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, 2005-2016.

BACKGROUND: Two classes of antiviral drugs are available for influenza antiviral therapy: the adamantanes and the neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs). Due to the emergence of adamantane-resistant variants, the use of these drugs has been largely limited in the world. The NAIs became the drugs of choice for treatment of influenza A infections. However, amino acid substitutions in the NA protein might lead to reduced sensitivity to NAIs. METHODS: The frequency and distribution of matrix protein 2 (M2) and neuraminidase (NA) variants which confer resistance to antiviral drugs was investigated in the

Emerging and Reemerging Diseases in the World Health Organization (WHO) Eastern Mediterranean Region-Progress, Challenges, and WHO Initiatives.

The Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) of the World Health Organization (WHO) continues to be a hotspot for emerging and reemerging infectious diseases and the need to prevent, detect, and respond to any infectious diseases that pose a threat to global health security remains a priority. Many risk factors contribute in the emergence and rapid spread of epidemic diseases in the Region including acute and protracted humanitarian emergencies, resulting in fragile health systems, increased population mobility, rapid urbanization, climate change, weak surveillance and limited laboratory diagnostic

Larval anisakids parasitizing the blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou, from Motril Bay in the Mediterranean region of southern Spain.

A total of 301 blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou Risso, 1826, ranging in length from 17 to 28 cm, from Motril Bay (Mediterranean coast, south Spain) were examined for anisakid nematodes, as these fish are common items in the Spanish Mediterranean diet. Three anisakid species were morphologically identified with a total prevalence of 10.63%. Anisakis simplex s.l. Rudolphi, 1809 had a prevalence value of 6.65%, compared with 2.66% for A. physeteris Baylis, 1923 and 2.33% for Hysterothylacium aduncum Rudolphi, 1802. Variations in prevalence values with season and host size are discussed. All

Integrated Phenolic, Volatilomic and Sensory Profiling of Two Finger Lime Cultivars and Faustrime Grown in a Mediterranean Region.

Finger lime (Citrus australasica) is an Australian native citrus valued as a "citrus caviar" in high-end gastronomy, and its cultivation is expanding in the Mediterranean region. Comparative quality data for different genotypes grown under Italian conditions are still scarce. This study characterised two finger lime cultivars, 'Pink Ice' (FPI) and 'Rainforest Pearl' (FRF), and the trigeneric hybrid Faustrime (FAU), cultivated in Central Italy and harvested at commercial maturity, through an integrated assessment of morphometric, physicochemical, histochemical and sensory traits. The three acce

Health workforce planning models for older adults in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region: a mixed methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: As the population across the World Health Organization Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) ages, healthcare systems are increasingly strained by the rising burden of non-communicable diseases and the growing demand for chronic geriatric care. Effective health workforce planning is essential to address these evolving needs. However, limited evidence exists on the applicability of workforce planning models tailored specifically to older adults in the EMR. The purpose of this review is to examine current models and strategies in health workforce planning for older adult care

An archaeobotanical and stable isotope approach to changing agricultural practices in the NW Mediterranean region around 4000 BC.

It has recently been observed, that a change in the crop spectrum happened during the so-called Middle Neolithic in France at ca. 4000 BC. An agricultural system based on free-threshing cereals (naked wheat and naked barley) seems to shift to one based on glume wheats. This is a major change for traditional farmers and this paper aims to shed light on its possible causes. Here we describe the results of new investigations in a key area for the understanding of this process: the NW Mediterranean arch, where free-threshing cereals are the main cultivars since ca. 5100 BC. New data confirm that t

First External Quality Assessment of Molecular and Serological Detection of Rift Valley Fever in the Western Mediterranean Region.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a mosquito-borne viral zoonosis which affects humans and a wide range of domestic and wild ruminants. The large spread of RVF in Africa and its potential to emerge beyond its geographic range requires the development of surveillance strategies to promptly detect the disease outbreaks in order to implement efficient control measures, which could prevent the widespread of the virus to humans. The Animal Health Mediterranean Network (REMESA) linking some Northern African countries as Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia with Southern European ones as Fran
