Meibum-a lipid-rich secretion produced by holocrine Meibomian glands (MG)-plays a central role in maintaining ocular surface homeostasis in humans. Previously, changes in MG lipidomes induced by inactivation of critical genes of meibogenesis, such as Elovl3, Soat1, Awat2, Sdr16c5/Sdr16c6, and others were shown to cause MG dysfunction (MGD) and dry eye in experimental animals. Here, we describe the impact of the changes in the lipid composition of meibum on its protective properties, specifically physiologically relevant thermotropic characteristics, using various mutant and wild-type animal mo

Pterygium is a degenerative ocular surface disorder whose relationship with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and tear film instability remains understudied, especially in Eastern India. This case-control study included 110 adults to evaluate tear film parameters and MGD status in pterygium patients compared with healthy controls. Pterygium cases showed significantly higher rates of Schirmer's I, TBUT and TMH abnormalities, with strong correlations between tear instability and MGD severity. Higher pterygium grades demonstrated the most marked tear film disruption and meibomian gland changes. T

Dry eye disease is a complex ophthalmic disorder that consists of two main subtypes, aqueous deficient dry eye (ADDE) and evaporative dry eye disease (EDED). Due to the complex underlying physiology, human dry eye disease can be difficult to model in laboratory animal species. Thus, the identification and characterization of a spontaneous large animal model of dry eye disease is desirable. Dogs have been described as an ideal spontaneous model of ADDE due to the similar pathophysiology between dogs and humans. Recently, EDED and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) have been increasingly recogniz

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a common and chronic disorder that has a significant adverse impact on patients' quality of life. It is a leading cause of evaporative dry eye disease (DED), as meibomian glands play an important role in providing lipids to the tear film, which helps to retard the evaporation of tears from the ocular surface. MGD is also often present in conjunction with primary aqueous-deficient DED. Obstructive MGD, the most commonly observed type of MGD, is the main focus of this article. MGD is probably caused by a combination of separate conditions: primary obstructive

Pterygium is a very common disease in an eye clinic characterized by a benign proliferation of local conjunctiva that often crosses the limber of cornea and extends into corneal surface. Variety of studies has showed that pterygium is able to result in ocular discomfort and the change of ocular surface environment, such as dry eye. However, the link between abnormal tear film function and pterygium is controversial. Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a common cause of dry eye and ocular discomfort but is often neglected, which may be the missing link between dry eye and pterygium. In this st

PURPOSE: Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) can occur after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). MGD is characterized by reduced lipid secretion by the meibomian glands, causing tear-film instability. Because chemotherapy and radiation can induce oxidative stress, we hypothesize that these exposures will increase the hazard of MGD after allo-HSCT.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed 139 allo-HSCT recipients at the University of Maryland Medical Center who completed post-transplant eye examinations from 2013 to 2025. Descriptive analysis summarized demog
