Development of a new episodic memory assessment tool (NEM): Preliminary data and clinical perspectives.

The present study aimed to test the discriminating power, reliability, and validity of a new episodic memory assessment tool (NEM). NEM was designed to be more ecological than current tests of episodic memory, based on incidental encoding and a deepened assessment of recall. The encoded material is a short video involving a choice procedure to encourage participant immersion. The delayed recall phase is guided by a semi-directive interview. Preliminary data were collected from 199 cognitively unimpaired participants aged 18 to 91, as well as from 35 older adults with cognitive impairment (18 p

The self and friend reference effects in episodic memory are maintained in older adults.

Self-referential information is better remembered than information encoded via semantic processing or in relation to others. Friend-referencing also enhances memory compared to more distant others, but its impact relative to self-referencing remains less understood. While older adults typically show declines in memory performance, it is unclear whether self- and friend-referencing advantages are preserved with age. Additionally, little is known about metacognitive monitoring in self- versus friend-encoded information in older adults. Participants completed a surprise recognition memory task fo

Sequence of episodic memory-related behavioral and brain-imaging abnormalities in type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Episodic memory decline is a common complication of type 2 diabetes (T2D). To comprehensively explore the neural mechanisms underlying it, we aimed to explore the sequence that episodic memory-related behavioral and brain-imaging biomarkers appear abnormal in the progression of T2D. METHODS: We enrolled 62 healthy controls and 110 patients with T2D. The California Verbal Learning Test, Montreal cognitive assessment, and Stroop color word test was used to assess the episodic memory, general cognitive function, and executive function. Principal component analysis was applied to extr

Autobiographical memory and episodic future thinking in anorexia nervosa: a three-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: People with anorexia nervosa (AN) show deficiencies with recalling specific details of autobiographical memories (AM). This may interfere with wider processes of self-narrative construction and identity building, which are a fundamental part of the recovery process. However, no studies have examined the temporal stability of AM deficiencies over time or their prognostic value in this population. METHODS: This study followed up adults with mostly longstanding AN that participated in a previous study examining AM and episodic future thinking (EFT) abilities after 3 years. A total of

Functional Recovery of Episodic Memory After Bilateral Fornix Infarction: A Longitudinal Tractography Case Report.

We present a rare case of bilateral fornix infarction in a 51-year-old woman who developed acute anterograde amnesia despite preserved general cognition. Serial neuropsychological assessments and diffusion tensor imaging-based tractography revealed a correlation between changes in fractional anisotropy (FA) and cognitive recovery, particularly in verbal and visual memory domains. Notably, Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R) delayed recall improved from <50 to 83, and Rey-Osterrieth complex figure test (ROCFT) delayed recall improved from 8 to 23 points during hospitalization. The Effects of Late-Onset Depression on Brain Activity During an Episodic Memory Task.

INTRODUCTION: Late-onset depression (LOD) has been implicated in irreversible cognitive decline, potentially mirroring early Alzheimer's Disease (AD) pathology. This study aimed to investigate brain activity differences during an episodic memory (EM) task in LOD patients compared to healthy controls (HC). METHODS: We recruited 15 LOD patients and 13 HC matched for age and gender. Participants completed a face-name association task during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) focusing on both the encoding and retrieval phases of EM. RESULTS: The statistical contrast between the groups

Consolidation deficits in episodic memory define distinct clinical and neurodegenerative profiles in Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is primarily associated with executive dysfunction, but episodic memory impairment is also present. Traditionally, these memory deficits have been attributed to retrieval difficulties linked to fronto-striatal dysfunction, rather than to disruptions in encoding or consolidation processes. However, the specific nature and diversity of memory impairments in HD remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the profile of episodic memory impairment in HD, identify distinct cognitive phenotypes, and examine their clinical, neuroanatomical, and biomarker cor

Dopaminergic Treatment and Episodic Memory in Parkinson's Disease: A Meta-analysis of the Literature.

To date, few studies have focused on the benefits of dopaminergic treatment on episodic memory functions in patients affected by Parkinson's disease (PD). We conducted a meta-analysis to determine the effects of pharmacological therapy with dopamine in alleviating episodic memory deficits in Parkinson's patients. A secondary aim was to evaluate the role of dopamine in episodic memory circuits and thus in different memory systems. We conducted a comprehensive literature search in PubMed (1971-2022) to find studies that met specific inclusion criteria. The studies had to provide sufficient data

Event-related potentials reveal visual episodic memory deficits in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients usually suffer from impaired episodic memory (EM), but its underlying electrophysiologic mechanism and impacted cognitive performance are unclear. We aim to investigate the association between episodic memory reserve and physiological measures of memory workload in TLE patients using Event-related potentials (ERP). METHODS: A change detection task with image stimuli assesses visual episodic memory. During the memory encoding and decoding phases, the ERP signals were analyzed from twenty-nine TLE patients (twelve with left TLE patients, seventee

Structural and Functional Brain Connectivity Uniquely Contribute to Episodic Memory Performance in Older Adults.

In this study, we examined the independent contributions of structural and functional connectivity markers to individual differences in episodic memory performance in 107 cognitively normal older adults from the BIOCARD study. Structural connectivity, defined by the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) measure of radial diffusivity (RD), was obtained from two medial temporal lobe white matter tracts: the fornix and hippocampal cingulum, while functional connectivity markers were derived from network-based resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) of five large-scale brain networks

Distinct neuroanatomical correlates of interference-related verbal episodic memory test in healthy older adults.

Verbal learning test can include a trial of interference process that intrude initial learning and impose additional cognitive stress. However, it has been unclear whether the multiple memory processes underly different brain structural bases. We measured performances of word retrieval that represents distinct memory processes (initial learning, interference, and retention) and regional gray matter morphology from 230 cognitively unimpaired older adults. We identified three distinct multivariate pattern modes using canonical correlation analysis that map correspondence between memory and brain

Brain single cell transcriptomic profiles in episodic memory phenotypes associated with temporal lobe epilepsy.

Memory dysfunction is prevalent in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), but little is known about the underlying molecular etiologies. Single-nucleus RNA sequencing technology was used to examine differences in cellular heterogeneity among left (language-dominant) temporal neocortical tissues from patients with TLE with (n = 4) or without (n = 2) impairment in verbal episodic memory. We observed marked cell heterogeneity between memory phenotypes and identified numerous differentially expressed genes across all brain cell types. The most notable differences were observed in glutamatergic (excitatory)

A direct test of competitive versus cooperative episodic-procedural network dynamics in human memory.

Classical lesion studies led to a consensus that episodic and procedural memory arises from segregated networks identified with the hippocampus and the caudate nucleus, respectively. Neuroimaging studies, however, show that competitive and cooperative interactions occur between networks during memory tasks. Furthermore, causal experiments to manipulate connectivity between these networks have not been performed in humans. Although nodes common to both networks, such as the precuneus and ventrolateral thalamus, may mediate their interaction, there is no experimental evidence for this. We tested

Transcranial direct current stimulation applied after encoding facilitates episodic memory consolidation in older adults.

Episodic memory shows the largest degree of age-related memory decline. There is evidence that consolidation, the process that stabilizes memories after encoding, is reduced in older adults. Previous studies have shown that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied during intentional encoding or immediately after a contextual reminder enhanced delayed episodic memory performance, suggesting a potential interaction between tDCS and consolidation or reconsolidation processes. The present randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled study addressed the question whether tDCS applied imme

Executive function but not episodic memory decline associated with visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Visual hallucinations (VH) have a significant impact on quality of life for people with Parkinson's disease (PD). A major reason for this is the well-established link with cognitive impairment, but there is still a need for more longitudinal studies examining the specific cognitive domains which may be affected. The aim of this study was to profile decline in cognition associated with VH in a cohort of 69 individuals with PD over 1 year. METHOD: Visual hallucinations assessments were carried out every 3 months. Executive function and episodic memory were assessed at baseline and

Episodic Memory Dysfunction in Behavioral Variant Frontotemporal Dementia: A Clinical And FDG-PET Study.

BACKGROUND: Episodic memory disturbance is still considered as an exclusion criterion for behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), but growing evidence suggests that memory can be impaired. OBJECTIVE: Our main purposes were to assess episodic memory in a group of bvFTD patients comparatively with Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, and analyze the relationship between episodic memory and brain metabolism measured using positron emission tomography imaging with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG-PET). Distinct resting-state functional connections associated with episodic and visuospatial memory in older adults.

Episodic and spatial memory are commonly impaired in ageing and Alzheimer's disease. Volumetric and task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies suggest a preferential involvement of the medial temporal lobe (MTL), particularly the hippocampus, in episodic and spatial memory processing. The present study examined how these two memory types were related in terms of their associated resting-state functional architecture. 3T multiband resting state fMRI scans from 497 participants (60-82 years old) of the cross-sectional Whitehall II Imaging sub-study were analysed using an unb

Verbal episodic memory along the course of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder: a new perspective.

Impairment on episodic memory (EM) has been strongly correlated with psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD). Morevover, the effects of course and progression of the illness on cognitive functioning have not been well established. The aim of the present study is to assess performance of episodic memory in BD and SZ according to their clinical stages. Subjects who met DSM-IV criteria for bipolar disorder (n=43) and schizophrenia (31), on euthymia or clinical remission, were recruited from the outpatients facilities at Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (B

Is verbal episodic memory in elderly with amyloid deposits preserved through altered neuronal function?

A potential mechanism that enables intellectual preservation in cognitively normal elderly that harbor beta-amyloid (Aβ) pathology is heightened cerebral glucose metabolism. To investigate cross-sectional inter-relationships between Aβ, glucose metabolism, and cognition, 81 subjects (mean age: 75 ± 7 years) underwent [(11)C]Pittsburgh Compound-B and [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography scans and neuropsychological testing. They were divided into low-Aβ (n = 53), intermediate-Aβ (n = 13) and high-Aβ (n = 15) groups as defined by their global cortical [(11)C]PIB retention. Gluc

Ayahuasca enhances the formation of hippocampal-dependent episodic memory without impacting false memory susceptibility in experienced ayahuasca users: An observational study.

BACKGROUND: Ayahuasca is an Amazonian brew with 5-HT2A-dependent psychedelic effects taken by religious groups globally. Recently, psychedelics have been shown to impair the formation of recollections (hippocampal-dependent episodic memory for specific details) and potentially distort memory while remembering. However, psychedelics spare or enhance the formation of familiarity-based memory (cortical-dependent feeling of knowing that a stimulus has been processed). AIMS: Given the growing literature on the plasticity-promoting effects of psychedelics, we investigated the acute impact of ayahua
