Acute stressors do not impair short-term memory or attention in an aged mouse model of amyloidosis.

Memory impairment in Alzheimer's disease patients is thought to be associated with the accumulation of amyloid-beta peptides and tau proteins. However, inconsistent reports of cognitive deficits in pre-clinical studies have raised questions about the link between amyloid-beta and cognitive decline. One possible explanation may be that studies reporting memory deficits often involve behavioral assessments that entail a high stress component. In contrast, in tasks without a high stress component transgenic mice do not consistently show declines in memory. The glucocorticoid cascade hypothesis of

Verbal Short-Term Memory Disturbance in the Primary Progressive Aphasias: Challenges and Distinctions in a Clinical Setting.

Impaired verbal 'phonological' short-term memory is considered a cardinal feature of the logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia (lv-PPA) and is assumed to underpin most of the language deficits in this syndrome. Clinically, examination of verbal short-term memory in individuals presenting with PPA is common practice and serves two objectives: (i) to help understand the possible mechanisms underlying the patient's language profile and (ii) to help differentiate lv-PPA from other PPA variants or from other dementia syndromes. Distinction between lv-PPA and the non-fluent variant of PPA

Impairment of Long-term Memory by a Short-term High-fat Diet via Hippocampal Oxidative Stress and Alterations in Synaptic Plasticity.

Excessive dietary fat intake is considered a great risk factor for metabolic disorders as well as cognitive dysfunction. However, the potential mechanisms underlying the effects of a high-fat diet (HFD) on the brain remain rather obscure. The purpose of this study was to address how early exposure to HFD induces biochemical changes in different brain regions and affects short- and long-term memory. Mice were fed HFD or normal chow for 4 or 7 weeks beginning in adulthood. Our results showed that oxidative stress and biochemical alterations first appeared in the hippocampus after 4 weeks of expo

Alzheimer's disease with progression analysis using a novel dilated convolutional attention based long short term memory model.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible neurodegenerative syndrome that affects memory, cognitive abilities and behaviour. Detecting AD in the early stage is crucial to improve the quality of life. However, traditional diagnostic approaches and manual analysis of neuroimaging data are slow, subjective and lead to human mistakes. Existing machine learning techniques often have difficulty in identifying complex patterns in high-dimensional biomedical data. These drawbacks emphasize the necessity for a more efficient and automated diagnostic system. This study introduced a new deep learning b

The role of visual imagery and verbal coding in short-term memory conjunctive binding: evidence from aphantasia.

Conjunctive binding - as opposed to relational binding - refers to our short-term memory for integrated representations of a series of features into a complex - unitized - object. The mechanisms necessary to encode conjunctive representations in memory are, to date, unknown. In this study, we tested whether mental visual imagery and verbal coding are necessary to encode conjunctive representations in short-term memory. We also explored the memory processes supporting retrieval of these representations. To explore specifically the role of visual imagery, we tested a population of aphantasic par

Electrophysiological correlates of visual short-term memory binding deficits in community-dwelling seniors at risk of dementia.

BACKGROUND: Visual Short-Term Memory Binding (VSTMB) is a preclinical marker of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Reduced early event-related potentials (ERPs) (100-250 ms) over fronto-central (FC) and parieto-occipital (PO) regions have been reported in patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) seen in the clinic. We investigated such ERPs in a larger sample of community-dwelling older adults who had not sought medical advice. METHODS: Participants (n = 215) were assessed with a neuropsychological battery and the VSTMB Task. The latter assessed the ability to detect changes between two consecuti

Verbal short term memory contribution to sentence comprehension decreases with increasing syntactic complexity in people with aphasia.

Sentence comprehension requires the integration of linguistic units presented in a temporal sequence based on a non-linear underlying syntactic structure. While it is uncontroversial that storage is mandatory for this process, there are opposing views regarding the relevance of general short-term-/working-memory capacities (STM/WM) versus language specific resources. Here we report results from 43 participants with an acquired brain lesion in the extended left hemispheric language network and resulting language deficits, who performed a sentence-to-picture matching task and an experimental tas

New onset delirium prediction using machine learning and long short-term memory (LSTM) in electronic health record.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and test an accurate deep learning model for predicting new onset delirium in hospitalized adult patients. METHODS: Using electronic health record (EHR) data extracted from a large academic medical center, we developed a model combining long short-term memory (LSTM) and machine learning to predict new onset delirium and compared its performance with machine-learning-only models (logistic regression, random forest, support vector machine, neural network, and LightGBM). The labels of models were confusion assessment method (CAM) assessments. We evaluated models on a hold-o

Encoding strategy mediates the effect of electrical stimulation over posterior parietal cortex on visual short-term memory.

Over past decades, converging neuroimaging and electrophysiological findings have suggested a crucial role of posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in supporting the storage capacity of visual short-term memory (VSTM). Moreover, a few recent studies have shown that electrical stimulation over PPC can enhance VSTM capacity, making it a promising method for improving VSTM function. However, the reliability of these results is still in question because null findings have also been observed. Among studies that reported significant effects, some found increased VSTM capacity only in people with low capac

EEG activity during the spatial span task in young men: Differences between short-term and working memory.

Short-term memory and working memory are two closely-related concepts that involve the prefrontal and parietal areas. These two types of memory have been evaluated by means of the spatial span task in its forward and backward conditions, respectively. To determine possible neurofunctional differences between them, this study recorded electroencephalographic activity (EEG) in the frontopolar (Fp1, Fp2), dorsolateral (F3, F4), and parietal (P3 and P4) areas during performance of the forward and backward conditions of this task in young men. The backward condition (an indicator of working memory)

Visual and linguistic components of short-term memory: Generalized Neural Model (GNM) for spoken and sign languages.

The question of apparent discrepancies in short-term memory capacity for sign language and speech has long presented difficulties for the models of verbal working memory. While short-term memory (STM) capacity for spoken language spans up to 7 ± 2 items, the verbal working memory capacity for sign languages appears to be lower at 5 ± 2. The assumption that both auditory and visual communication (sign language) rely on the same memory buffers led to the claims of impairment of STM buffers in sign language users. Yet, no common model deals with both the sensory and linguistic nature of spoken an

Does exposure to GSM 900 MHz mobile phone radiation affect short-term memory of elementary school students?

BACKGROUND: Now-a-days, children are exposed to mobile phone radiation at a very early age. We have previously shown that a large proportion of children in the city of Shiraz, Iran use mobile phones. Furthermore, we have indicated that the visual reaction time (VRT) of university students was significantly affected by a 10 min real/sham exposure to electromagnetic fields emitted by mobile phone. We found that these exposures decreased the reaction time which might lead to a better response to different hazards. We have also revealed that occupational exposures to radar radiations decreased the

Verbal short-term memory in individuals with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion: specific deficit in serial order retention capacities?

Many researchers have recently explored the cognitive profile of velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS), a neurodevelopmental disorder linked to a 22q11.2 deletion. However, verbal short-term memory has not yet been systematically investigated. We explored verbal short-term memory abilities in a group of 11 children and adults presenting with VCFS and two control groups, matched on either CA or vocabulary knowledge, by distinguishing short-term memory for serial order and item information. The VCFS group showed impaired performance on the serial order short-term memory tasks compared to both control

Vehicle CO₂ emission prediction based on firefly with ant colony optimization tuned long short-term memory model.

Accurate vehicle-level CO₂ emission prediction is essential for regulatory planning and greener powertrain design. This study presents an integrated FA-ACO-LSTM framework for estimating vehicle-level tailpipe CO₂ emissions from standard vehicle descriptors. The contribution lies in combining leakage-aware Binary Firefly feature selection, mixed-variable FA-ACO hyperparameter tuning, repeated-run evaluation, and post hoc interpretability into a unified prediction pipeline. Using a public fuel-consumption dataset sourced from the official Canadian vehicle fuel-consumption and emissions registry

Evidence from multifeature whole-report in visual short-term memory suggests that not all misbinding is swapping.

Forgetting is an everyday part of life but its precise mechanisms are incompletely understood. Recall errors are often not random. Rather, people often incorrectly report information about the wrong object in memory. In short term memory, this has been referred to as "misbinding". Here, it has commonly been assumed that the features of an object get swapped around in mind. However, an alternative mechanism is that information about a feature of one object might be lost, and replaced by another object's feature. Commonly-used cued recall approaches are blind to this distinction, but testing mul

Research on inter-well connectivity in CO2 flooding based on long short-term memory graph attention network.

Inter-well connectivity is a key parameter for evaluating the effectiveness of the CO2 flooding development and optimizing injection-production strategies. However, existing research methods face challenges in dynamic modeling, real-time prediction, and adaptability to complex reservoirs. To address these issues, this study proposes a method based on the Long Short-Term Memory-Graph Attention Network (LSTM-GAT) to quantitatively analyze inter-well connectivity and predict future well production. First, a geological model is constructed, and numerical simulations are conducted to obtain dynamic

Long short-term memory-based deep learning model for the discovery of antimicrobial peptides targeting Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

MOTIVATION: Tuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, remains a global health challenge driven by rising antibiotic resistance. Antimicrobial peptides offer a promising alternative due to membrane-disruptive activity and low resistance potential, yet the scarcity of TB-specific AMP data constrains targeted development. We present a reproducible deep learning protocol that integrates long short-term memory networks with transfer learning to classify and generate TB-active peptides. RESULTS: Classifiers were pretrained on a large corpus of general AMPs and fine-tuned on curated TB-spe
