Prematurely-born infants are exposed to multiple invasive procedures while in the intensive care unit. Newborn rats and humans have similar behavioral responses to noxious stimulation. Previous studies have shown that early noxious stimuli may alter dentate gyrus neurogenesis and the behavioral repertoire of adult rats. We evaluated the late effects of noxious stimulation administered during different phases of development on two spatial memory tests; object recognition (OR) and Morris water maze (WM) tests. Noxious stimulation was induced by an intra-plantar injection of complete Freund's adj

We present a new measure of everyday memory, the Questionnaire of Memory (Q-MEM), which is specifically adapted for the ecological assessment of memory disorders in school-age children and constructed with four sections tapping effortful/intentional learning, automatic/procedural learning, prospective memory/organization, and working memory. Confirmatory Factor Analyses supported the Q-MEM's four-factor structure in 700 five-to twelve-year-old children. The analyses also revealed a good internal reliability and a good test-retest fidelity. Finally, comparisons between Q-MEM profiles of childre

BackgroundSerotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is essential to mood regulation, and its dysfunction has been strongly connected to depression and anxiety disorders. The key enzyme for serotonin production is tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2); genetic abnormalities influencing TPH2 activity have been connected to mood disorders.ObjectiveOur study aims to understand the consequences of human TPH2 mutation-TPH2 R439H in mice, especially depression and anxiety-like behaviors.MethodsCompared to wild-type, we employed 6-month-old knock-in mice, heterozygotes (one allele) and homozygotes (two alleles)

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system adverse effects, such as sedation, often accompany the use of first-generation antihistamines. These effects might interfere with memory functioning and psychomotor performance. Levocetirizine was recently introduced as a new antihistamine said to be free from sedative effects.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate the effects of levocetirizine (5 mg), diphenhydramine (50 mg), and placebo on memory and psychomotor performance after acute (day 1) and subchronic (day 4) daily administration in 48 healthy volunteers (24 men and 24 women).

OBJECTIVE: To investigate learning-memory deficit in different ages of AD-like APP transgenic mice and to observe the protective effects of 2,3,5,4'-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-beta-D-glucoside (TSG), which is the main component of Polygonum multiflorum, on learning-memory abilities.
METHODS: PDAPPV717I transgenic (Tg) mice were randomly divided into 3 model groups (4, 10 and 16 months old mice) and TSG treated (at doses 120 and 240 micromol/kg/d) groups. TSG was administered to some Tg mice with an age range 4-10 months. In untreated 10 months old Tg mice, the TSG was administrated to those fal

The hippocampus is essential for human memory.1 The protracted maturation of memory capacities from infancy through early childhood2-4 is thus often attributed to hippocampal immaturity.5-7 The hippocampus of human infants has been characterized in terms of anatomy,8,9 but its function has never been tested directly because of technical challenges.10,11 Here, we use recently developed methods for task-based fMRI in awake human infants12 to test the hypothesis that the infant hippocampus supports statistical learning.13-15 Hippocampal activity increased with exposure to visual sequences of obje

Pheromones are chemical communication signals known to elicit stereotyped behaviours and/or physiological processes in individuals of the same species, generally in relation to a specific function (e.g. mate finding in moths). However, recent research suggests that pheromones can modulate behaviours, which are not directly related to their usual function and thus potentially affect behavioural plasticity. To test this hypothesis, we studied the possible modulatory effects of pheromones on olfactory learning and memory in Agrotis ipsilon moths, which are well-established models to study sex-phe

BACKGROUND: Perioperative, modifiable factors contributing to perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND) have not been clearly defined.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the contribution of anesthesia lengths and the degrees of surgical trauma to PND and neuroinflammation, a critical process for PND.
METHODS: Three-month-old C57BL/6J mice were subjected to 2 h or 6 h isoflurane anesthesia plus a 5 min or 15 min left common carotid artery exposure (surgery) in a factorial design (two factors: anesthesia with two levels and surgery with three levels). Their learning and memory were tested by Barnes ma

The occurrence of cognitive dysfunctions and anxiety and mood disorders has been shown to be higher in migraine patients. Nitric Oxide (NO) is a significant neurotransmitter in the pathophysiology of migraine, anxiety and neurodegenerative disorders. Therefore, the present study was conducted to evaluate the role of NO system in migraine-induced memory impairment and anxiety like behaviors. Nitroglycerin (NTG) was administered to the animals as an animal model of migraine and pretreatment with L-Arginine, L-NAME and saline were implemented to evaluate the role of NO system in possible cognitiv

The aim of the present study is to explore whether those with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) and dyslexia display distinct or overlapping cognitive profiles with respect to learning outcomes. In particular, we were interested in two key cognitive skills associated with academic performance - working memory and IQ. We recruited three groups of children - those with SLI, those with dyslexia, and a control group. All children were given standardized tests of working memory, IQ (vocabulary and matrix), spelling, and math. The pattern of results suggests that both children with dyslexia and SLI

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Verbal declarative memory performance relies on frontotemporal connectivity. The uncinate fasciculus is a major association tract connecting the frontal and temporal lobes. Hemispheric asymmetries contribute to various cognitive and neurobehavioral abilities. Here we investigated microstructural alterations and hemispheric asymmetry of the uncinate fasciculus and their possible correlation to memory performance of children with learning disorders attributed to verbal memory deficits.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two groups of right-handed children with learning disorders att

We describe the case of an accomplished actor, whom we term AB, who suffered severe amnesia following a cardiac arrest and hypoxic brain damage, affecting medial temporal and thalamic structures. His performance on standard episodic memory tests, and on measures of retrograde amnesia, including autobiographical memory, was severely impaired. When presented with passages from plays he had not appeared in, AB showed a severe impairment at the first learning trial, but thereafter showed a 'normal' learning curve for this semantically and syntactically complex material. On being presented with pas

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) are impaired at incremental reward-based learning. It is typically assumed that this impairment reflects a loss of striatal dopamine. However, many open questions remain about the nature of reward-based learning deficits in PD. Recent studies have found that even simple reward-based learning tasks rely on a combination of cognitive and computational strategies, including one-shot episodic memory. These findings raise questions about how incremental learning and episodic memory contribute to decision-making in PD. We tested healthy participants (n = 26; 14

Little is known about the neural substrates underlying early memory functioning. To gain more insight, we examined how toddlers remember newly learned words. Hippocampal and anterior medial-temporal lobe (MTL) processes have been hypothesized to support forming and retaining the association between novel words and their referents, but direct evidence of this connection in early childhood is lacking. We assessed 2-year-olds (n = 38) for their memory of newly learned pseudowords associated with novel objects and puppets. We tested memory for these associations during the same session as learning

Cognitive function has not been well studied after neurosurgery for posterior fossa lesions despite its potential importance in determining surgical indications and approaches. The present study evaluated changes in cognitive functions after posterior fossa surgery to detect any differences between the middle cranial fossa and lateral suboccipital approaches in 50 patients with posterior fossa lesions such as tumors and vascular diseases. Twenty-five patients underwent surgery via the middle fossa and 25 via the lateral suboccipital approaches. Computerized test battery (CogState) and conventi

The minority of healthy subjects can (without previous learning) breathe at exactly double of their resting tidal volume on demand. The aim of the present study was to find whether this estimate of tidal volume value can be learned and at what speed. Basic spirometric values were measured by Oxycon B in 20 healthy volunteers. They learned in one day to breathe at double of the resting tidal volume twice for 3 min. The existence and duration of the memory trace was ascertained four times (three times on the same day, once three weeks later). This engram can be demonstrated on the day of learnin

This study examined subtypes of children with reading disabilities using the NEPSY (series of Neuropsychological tests authored by Marit Korkman, Ursula Kirk and Sally Kemp). Multiple methods of cluster analysis were performed with 80 elementary school-age children identified as reading disabled. Students completed the NEPSY Language Domain and the NEPSY Memory and Learning Domain. Three clusters emerged which were interpreted as: (1) a No Language or Memory Deficit Subtype, (2) a Global Language and Memory Deficit Subtype, and (3) a Global Memory Deficit Subtype. This study suggested that mem

Executive function, known to be impaired during late-life depression, is dependent on frontostriatal pathways. Memory is also frequently observed to be impaired among late-life depressed patients, so we assessed the possibility that executive function mediates the learning and recall deficit as a "downstream" effect of the frontostriatal compromise in executive function. A cross-sectional sample of minor and major depressed patients (N=95) and nondepressed volunteers (N=71), screened for other Axis I disorders, dementia, medical comorbidity, and severity of depression, completed a neuropsychol

The case of a patient with above-average intelligence and educational background, high motivation, and an approximate IQ-MQ difference of 40 points is documented. The patient has been examined repeatedly for nearly a decade. Extensive neuroradiological material of his focal bilateral brain damage in the dorsal diencephalon is available. A widespread range of cognitive tests was used to investigate his actual performance on all relevant aspects of intelligence, attention, subjective memory, immediate retention, learning, skill and problem solving abilities, concept formation, cognitive flexibil
