INTRODUCTION: Low back pain (LBP) is a global health problem with a multifactorial etiology. Many clinicians believe that a change in the lumbar lordosis is a cause of LBP. The normal range of lordosis has not yet been agreed on. Consequently, the practice of measuring the lordosis needs to be re-evaluated. Our study aims primarily to determine the lumbar lordotic angle (LLA) and lumbosacral angle (LSA) in individuals with and without chronic LBP (CLBP), and secondarily to analyze the correlation between age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and pain severity.

BACKGROUND: Meniscus root tears, if untreated, can lead to rapid osteoarthritic changes. Effective repairs are essential to maintain meniscal function and prevent degeneration.
HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the integrity of medial meniscus (MM) root repairs performed using an inlay transosseous single-tunnel repair technique. It was hypothesized that such repairs could withstand physiological cyclic weightbearing in full extension.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: Fifteen fresh-frozen cadaveric knee specimens (mean age, 67 ± 14 years) with intact collat

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of arthroscopic surgery for combined tears of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus (PHMM) and the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus (AHLM).
METHODS: Between September 2009 and December 2013, a retrospective investigation was performed on 48 patients (48 knees) with combined tears of PHMM and AHLM who underwent arthroscopic surgery. All patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) diagnosis in the outpatient department. After admission, other basic examinations were performed. PHMM was treated with partial meniscectomy and AHLM was tr

Although meniscus defects and degeneration are strongly correlated with the later development of osteoarthritis, the promise of regenerative medicine strategies is to prevent and/or delay the disease's progression. Meniscal reconstruction has been shown in animal models with tendon grafting and transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs); however, these procedures have not shown the same efficacy in clinical studies. Here, our aim was to investigate the ability of tendon grafts pretreated with exogenous synovial-derived MSCs to prevent cartilage degeneration in a rat partial meniscus defe

PURPOSE: To investigate whether inducing valgus alignment and shifting the load laterally through high tibial osteotomy (HTO) alone decreases the extent of medial meniscus extrusion (MME) in the setting of medial meniscus posterior root tear (MMPRT) using ultrasound evaluation.
METHODS: Eight fresh-frozen human cadaveric knee specimens were tested using a 6-degree-of-freedom robotic testing system and ultrasound. Each specimen was tested in 5 conditions: (1) intact, (2) MMPRT, (3) medial meniscus repair (MMR), (4) combined medial open-wedge HTO + MMR, and (5) HTO + MMPRT. Measurements were ob

The optimal treatment for combined osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) with considerable bony defect of the lateral femoral condyle (LFC) and torn discoid lateral meniscus is unclear. We present a case of a 15-year-old female who was a gymnast and had a large OCD lesion in the LFC combined with deficiency of the lateral meniscus. The patient underwent the "one-step" technique of osteoperiosteal autologous iliac crest graft and lateral meniscus allograft transplantation after a failure of meniscectomy with repair at another hospital. Twenty-four months postoperatively, clinical results were signifi

PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic utility of measuring the maximum thickness of the medial meniscus (MTMM) for detecting medial meniscus posterior root tear (MMPRT).
METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated patients with medial meniscus (MM) injuries who underwent arthroscopic procedures between January 2018 and February 2024. Patients with concomitant lateral meniscal injuries, ligament injuries, or a history of knee trauma were excluded. MTMM was measured as the maximum vertical length in the coronal plane, identified by systematically measuring all slices using digital calipers on pro

PURPOSE: To enhance the understanding of histologic healing after repairing medial meniscal posterior root tears (MMPRTs) at an early stage, utilizing a goat model.
METHODS: Eighteen adult goats, totaling 36 knee joints, were allocated into 3 groups (n = 12): sham group (Sham), root tear group (RT), and root tear with transosseous suture group (RTS). At 12- and 24-week intervals postsurgery, all the knees were harvested for imaging, macroscopic, histologic, and biomechanical assessments.
RESULTS: The intact root served as a meniscus-bone interface that connected the tibial and circular fiber

The development of sustainable and versatile formaldehyde-free bio-based adhesives is currently a research focus in materials science. However, their practical extensive applications are often limited by their high brittleness and poor performance. Inspired by the robust structure of the meniscus (composed of a rigid framework of interwoven collagen fibers and a flexible buffer layer of the glycosaminoglycan matrix), this study utilizes poly(ethylene glycol itaconate) (EIA) synthesized from itaconic acid derived from the fermentation of crop straws as a buffer layer. Through hydrogen bonding,

BACKGROUND: The menisci serve as secondary stabilizers in the knee, and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears have been associated with meniscal tears. Previous studies have indicated that a delay ≥12 months is associated with development of new meniscal pathology in an ACL-deficient knee. Some studies have indicated that the time period might be shorter in the pediatric and adolescent population, and other predictive factors remain poorly defined.
PURPOSE: To examine the association between time, patient-related factors, and the extent and location of meniscal pathology for patients of all

» Bucket-handle meniscus tears (BHMTs) are complex injuries that often cause mechanical symptoms such as locking, restricted motion, and pain, with high prevalence in active individuals and those with concomitant anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries.» BHMTs may occur acutely from trauma or pivoting movements, often in association with ACL injuries, or develop chronically from degenerative changes. Bucket-handle tears of the medial meniscus are most common, while lateral BHMTs are less frequent but more often seen in younger athletes with ACL tears. Typical symptoms include pain, locking,

Discoid medial meniscus (DMM) is a rare congenital anomaly, with bilateral cases being even more uncommon. Due to its rarity, comprehensive data on its prevalence, clinical presentation, and optimal management strategies are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and treatment outcomes of symptomatic DMM in a pediatric population. A retrospective review was conducted on patients under 18 years of age diagnosed with symptomatic DMM. Data were extracted using ICD-10 codes Q68.6 and M23.16 and were supplemented by free-text searches. The inclusion criteria

The management of medial meniscus horizontal cleavage tears can be challenging. Currently, several treatment options, including nonoperative and surgical options, have been proposed in the literature. Different repair techniques aiming to promote the healing process have been reported and have shown good outcomes. However, recurrent parameniscal cysts and decreased meniscal volume have also been reported. In this Technical Note, a novel surgical technique to repair a horizontal cleavage tear of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus is reported in young patients. The technique uses a strip

The intra-articular injury most often associated with a chronic anterior cruciate ligament tear involves the posterior horn of the medial meniscus. A specific type of medial meniscal injury, called a ramp lesion, has received greater attention for identification and treatment because of its considerable incidence and diagnostic difficulty. Based on their location, these lesions may be arthroscopically "hidden" during traditional anterior visualization. The purpose of the present Technical Note is to describe the Recife maneuver. This maneuver diagnoses injuries to the posterior horn of the med

PURPOSE: In adolescent patients, meniscal tear injury can occur either in isolation (e.g., discoid lateral meniscus tears) or in association with other traumatic injuries including tibial eminence fracture or ACL tear. Damage to meniscal integrity has been shown to increase contact pressure in articular cartilage, increasing risk of early onset osteoarthritis. In symptomatic patients failing conservative management, surgical intervention via meniscus repair or meniscus transplant is indicated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the radial dimensions of pediatric menisci throughout devel

BACKGROUND: Due to difficult-to-access location and complex tear patterns, the management of meniscus injuries in isolation and in conjunction with anterior cruciate ligament injury may be challenging. The aim of this video is to present techniques and tips that may help surgeons perform arthroscopic all-inside repair of complex meniscus tears.
INDICATIONS: Indications for the presented repair techniques are young patients with high activity demands, symptomatic lateral and medial meniscus lesions, ligamentous knee instability, chondral changes grade 2 or less, neutral joint alignment, and bo

BACKGROUND: Medial meniscus posterior root tears (MMPRT) can lead to significant pain, functional limitations, and osteoarthritis (OA). Biomechanically, MMPRT has been shown to be equivalent to total meniscectomy in terms of peak contact pressure in the medial compartment. Transtibial repair of a meniscus root tear has also been shown to restore hoop stresses and reduced peak contact pressure to the normal intact state. Clinically, root repair was shown to reduce rates of OA progression and need for total knee arthroplasty when compared with nonoperative treatment or partial meniscectomy for M

Partial meniscectomy, which is generally used for the treatment of meniscal tears, can lead to knee joint osteoarthritis. To prevent this important complication, attempting to restore normal knee joint kinematics and biomechanical forces after partial meniscectomy is essential. Implantation of a meniscal scaffold can be useful in this regard, improving the function of the meniscus on knee joint biomechanics after partial meniscectomy. Use of meniscal scaffolds would have specific clinical merit for young patients who are at highest for developing knee joint osteoarthritis over time. Herein, we

BACKGROUND: Discoid meniscus is a congenital anomaly that typically affects the lateral meniscus. The appearance of the discoid medial meniscus in both knees is extremely rare, with an incidence of only 0.012%.
CASE SUMMARY: Our patient was a 30-year-old female. Under no obvious predisposing causes, she began to experience pain in both knees, which worsened while walking and squatting. The pain was aggravated after exercise, and joint flexion and extension activities were accompanied by knee snapping. Apley's test was positive on physical examination, and there was a pressing pain in the medi
